It is almost the time of year for year-end countdowns. Over the past 9 years, I have posted various explanation of how both BB and AT40 complied their year-end pop singles charts. I decided to post my attempts to analyze BB’s year end pop singles chart during the Rock Era beginning in 1955 up to the Soundscan era in 1991. Some of these ranking were posted in other threads, but now they will all be in the same thread for anyone interested.
Since BB did not rank all years the same way, I will provide an explanation of what BB may have done year by year with an attempt to match what BB did for most years. I am posting this under General Music Discussion rather than the AT40 Classics because this thread is about BB’s year end pop singles chart rankings. AT40 did not always use BB’s year-end chart. If you are interested in AT40’s year-end rankings when they compiled their own chart or my estimates of what AT40 would have done for years they used BB, there is a thread called “What If AT40 Ranked Their Own Year-End Countdown”.
From 1962 to 1986 the basis for BB’s year-end pop singles chart was a simple inverse point system with bonus points added for #1 some years and later top for 10 hits. The inverse point system works as 100 points for #1, 99 points for #2, down to 1 point for #100. I will refer to this as reverse rank throughout this thread. For these years I will post attempts to match or provide corrected versions of the official published year end pop singles chart.
Before 1962, BB’s YE charts were not based on a direct inverse point system of the published weekly charts. They were likely based on the accumulation of data to compile the weekly charts. For the early Rock Era I will post charts based on an inverse point system. My rankings before 1962 are not meant as a correction of the official chart, but as an alternative version ranked with an inverse point methodology.
AT40 and Joel Whitburn’s Record Research regarded the rock era as starting in 1955, so that is where I will start. I used the Best Sellers chart for 1955. BB did a separate ranking for the Best Sellers, Jockey, Jukebox, and Honor Roll of hits charts. The official chart referred to today is BB’s Best Sellers ranking.
Just as BB did for 1955, I only did a top 30 ranking. My ranking is based on a modified reverse rank methodology. The Best Sellers chart fluctuated from 25 to 30 positions in 1955 so I only counted positions in the top 25. I gave 25 points for #1, 24 points to #2, down to 1 point for #25. Number ones were given an additional 25 points for each week at #1. What resulted is similar but not the same as BB’s official Best Sellers ranking. My survey period was the chart dates of 1/5/1955 to 11/30/1955. Until the 1970’s BB's survey periods began with the first survey in January. The cut off dates fluctuated but were generally though the end of November. Records were not credited outside the survey periods.

Still blows my mind that Billboard for so many years did not have December weeks in any of their survey periods for the year end chart.

Hey Vince,
Just wanted to say 'thanks' for all the hard work you do on these things. I am sure it takes a lot of time and effort to do these and to get it right. You are to be commended for that. I think one reason that people really enjoy year end charts is that it's interesting to remember all the big hits in a given 12 month period.
In my mind, all year end charts should contain most (if not all) of the Top 10 hits of a given year. In addition, the #1 for a year should be either the biggest seller or received the most airplay of a given year. I know that Cash Box Magazine's year end charts were a lot like Billboard's from 1956-1977 in which songs that peaked in January (at the beginning of a year) and December (songs that peaked late in the year) were often MIA on the year end chart--OR-- didn't get full credit for their chart life and it is reflected on where the song placed on a year end chart. I only think Cash Box's year end charts were better than Billboard's in two years (1978 & 1979)--otherwise the November to November time frame is really the best idea for a year end chart.

Here is 1956. This is only a top 50 since that is all BB did. While BB did publish a weekly Top 100 throughout 1956 they never did a year-end chart for the Top 100. Year-end charts were done for the other pop charts, but the one based on the Best Sellers is considered the official year-end chart today. The inverse point system I used is still based on the top 25 of BB’s Best Sellers chart. Unlike BB, I did not separate “Don’t Be Cruel” and “Hound Dog”, they were both on the same record. The survey period runs the chart dates of 1/4/1956 to 11/28/1956.

This is the top 50 of 1957 based on an inverse point system using BB’s Best sellers chart. This chart is based on performance in the top 30. The inverse point system is 30 points for #1, 29 for #2, down to 1 point for #30. 30 bonus point are added for each week at #1. The survey period is the chart dates of 1/2/1957 to 11/30/1957. This is the second year with a double sided hit at #1.

For 1958 I did a top 100 of the year since it was the first year of BB's Hot 100 chart. BB's official year end pop singles chart for 1958 was a top 50 based on a combination of the Best Sellers and Hot 100. I went with the Top 100 for the first half of 1958 since sides were ranked separately just as the Hot 100 did. My inverse point version is based on reverse rank with 100 bonus point for each week at #1. The survey period is the chart dates of 1/4/1958 to 11/30/1958. Due to the cut off dates the full popularity of some songs are not fully represented. Had "It's All In The Game" had its full chart run counted it would have been #1, and "At The Hop" #2.

Here is 1959. The first full year of BB's Hot 100 chart. My inverse point year end chart is once again based on reverse rank with 100 bonus points for each week at #1. Because of the limitations of a defined survey period songs from early or late in the year do not have their full popularity represented. "Mack The Knife" would have been #1 if its full chart run was counted. The survey period is the chart dates of 1/4/1959 to 11/29/1959.

Still blows my mind that Billboard for so many years did not have December weeks in any of their survey periods for the year end chart. I agree. I always thought that they should have printed the year-end charts in late January so the chart year could have matched the calendar year.

This should get more interesting now that I can attempt to match what BB did. For 1962, BB compiled their year-end pop singles chart by an inverse point system based on the positions on the published weekly charts. BB’s 1962 ranking used reverse rank with no bonus points. The survey period was 1/6/1962 to 10/27/1962. My attempt to match what BB did came close, but there were a few songs whose points did not match with the official BB ranking. The most notable is “Johnny Get Angry” ranking at #56 on BB, but #46 on my attempted match.

Now an alternate version for 1962. When reverse rank is used without #1 bonus points a lot of the #1s under perform on the year-end chart. I did a second ranking for 1962 using reverse rank with 100 bonus points for each week at #1. I also extended the survey period through 11/24/1962. This extension still does not get “Big Girls Don’t Cry” into the survey, but it did get “Monster Mash” and “He’s A Rebel” in. The bonus points get “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” on to the list.

Now on to 1963. I will post three versions for this year. The first version is my attempt to match BB’s originally published YE pop singles chart. Using reverse rank with no bonus points for the survey period of 1/5/1963 to 11/30/1963, what I got was close but there were some discrepancies. The biggest discrepancy was I had “Surfer Girl” by the Beach Boys at #30 while BB left it off. Of interesting note is the top 3 in this version never hit #1 on the weekly surveys.
