DJ Joe,
BB's methodology in the 1960's and 1970's, what I am referring to as reverse rank favors longevity over rank. Without bonus points one week at #1 is worth 100 points while two weeks at #51 is also worth 100 points. An example of favoring longevity over peak is "Days of Wine and Roses" by Henry Mancini peaked at #33 and made into top 50 of 1963. Better methodologies were used in the 80's by both BB and AT40. Here I am just trying to show what BB did.

Next is my attempt to match BB’s official ranking for 1972. The methodology was reverse rank with 100 bonus points for each week at #1. This was the first year BB included part of the previous year in the survey period. The survey period is 12/4/1971 to 11/18/1972. There were a lot of flaws with BB’s official ranking. Not all #1 songs got bonus points and there was no position #89 on the originally published version. Both “Family Affair" and “A Horse With No Name” move up in my version. AT40 did their own ranking for 1972 and had “A Horse with No Name” at #10 which is more consistent with my version. I had “You Are Everything” – Stylistics at #56 which BB did not include.

DJ Joe, BB's methodology in the 1960's and 1970's, what I am referring to as reverse rank favors longevity over rank. Without bonus points one week at #1 is worth 100 points while two weeks at #51 is also worth 100 points. Here I am just trying to show what BB did. Vince, I really appreciate all the work you are doing trying to match Billboard's ranking methodology; I remember reading that Fred Bronson (in his third edition of Hot 100 Hits) added bonus points to all songs that made the Top 10 to keep lower ranking, slow moving songs from placing higher than higher ranking, faster moving songs. I know that oldies stations (are there many left?) generally play Top 10 hits the most and lower ranking songs the least--as a general rule. Keep up the hard work--your multiple year end charts for some years really reflects how differently a year end chart can look depending on the methodology used to compile said year end survey. As Mr. Spock used to say on Star Trek 'fascinating'. 'DJ' Joe Cash Box Countdown

Next is 1973 and my attempt to match BB’s official ranking. The survey period is 11/25/1972 to 11/17/1973. The methodology is reverse rank with 100 points for each week at #1. My version was very close to the official version. Three point discrepancies caused the positions to change for “Last Song”, “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love”, & “Don’t Expect Me To Be Your Friend”, but otherwise it matched.

This is my attempt to match BB’s official ranking for 1974. Once again I used reverse rank with 100 bonus points for each week at #1. The survey period was 11/24/1973 to 10/26/1974. There were a lot of discrepancies with #1 songs as BB did not seem to consistently award the #1 bonus points, some #1s got them while others did not. Two #1s that were included on my list but not on BB’s were “Can’t Get Enough of Your love, Babe” and “You Haven’t Done Nothing”. The former due to getting #1 bonus points and the latter’s getting enough points to rank at #81 even if its week at #1 was in the 1975 survey period.

Now for 1975. The methodology is reverse rank with 100 bonus points for each week at #1. The survey period is 11/2/1974 to 11/1/1975. I did not get a match with BB’s originally published version or revised version. The most obvious difference is in my ranking “Some Kind of Wonderful” ranked at #75, while BB’s originally published version had it at #6. BB was selective as to what #1 songs got bonus points which also affected positions. BB’s had some ties in their official list, however some tying records point totals did not match, thus they were not really tied. I broke ties by points, then peak position, weeks at peak position, I did not have to go any further. “Black Superman “Muhammad Ali”” made my list at #92, but did not make BB’s list. It had a split chart run, but both runs were completely in the 1975 survey period. Perhaps BB missed one of its chart runs.

Vince,
As you can tell by now, I'm a big fan of these lists. You're doing a terrific job. As you move into the key years in music for me, I want to tell my year-end chart story.
The year-end show of 1980 was the first one I listened to and wrote down; ditto for 1981. About that time, I was starting to keep track of the full top 40 every week. By December of 1982, I was confident enough in my knowledge of the charts to come up with a year-end list of my own, and to devise my own formula for compiling it. I had never seen anyone else's formula, let alone AT40's.
I was pleased enough with my results that I mailed them in to the show. (I enclosed a personal letter to Casey, telling him boldly that "I want to take over your job when you retire." I was 15. What did I know?)
Well, it took a few months, but the stat cats at AT40 mailed me a form letter showing in detail their year-end chart formula and how they applied it to their official list. I don't have this letter handy at the moment. But I do remember that they used only the top 50 of the weekly chart and didn't bother with the next 50. They used an inverted point scale, then assigned bonus points for the top ten and for #1.
I agreed that that method was fine, but over the course of the rest of the '80s, I strove to create a straight point system, with a simple point value for each position. The goal was the best of both worlds: to simplify the compiling of the list every year while making it more accurate than either AT40's or Billboard's.
It took weeks to formulate the point values themselves. I decided that #1 would be worth 1,000 points. Then I went back through the chart runs of every song and calculated, position by position, an average of weeks spent at that position or above. From these averages, I determined what each position was worth. It was tedious but rewarding. A lot of work? No. A lot of fun!
All of this went out the window when Billboard transitioned to BDS and SoundScan. I felt that there would no longer be a way to improve upon the accuracy of the official lists. But, for ten years, I like to think I kicked some chart butt.

Doofus67,
That is awesome that AT40 let you know their methodology and that you had it back in 1982. I got it from Rob Durkee about 8 years ago. I posted ranking for 1985 - 1989 using AT40's formula under the thread "What If AT40 Did Their Own Year End Countdown". They are different from the BB rankings AT40 used those years.
My first year end show was 1978, but I didn't attempt guessing the methodology until 1983 when I wanted to predict BB's the top 20 of the year. Working with BB's 1982 survey, I was surprised that the basic formulas was reverse rank. I thought BB had something really complex. It grew from there and I am posting the results. Many of these BB rankings I calculated back the 90's when I was able to get Joel Whitburn's chart books and have the data.
I would love to see the formula you created if you don't mind posting it sometime.

For 1976, I got an exact match with BB’s official ranking. The survey period was 11/8/1975 to 10/30/1976. The methodology changed in 1976. The raw points were still calculated by reverse rank, but #1 bonus points were calculated differently than before and provided more weight for consecutive multiple week at #1.
Number one bonus points were now calculated by summing the number of consecutive weeks at number one and multiplying by 100. For example, 3 consecutive weeks at #1 gets 600 points based on (1+2+3) x 100 = 600. The formula ((n^2+n)/2)*100, where n = number of weeks at #1 can be used to calculate the bonus points for any number of weeks at #1. If a record has a non-consecutive stay at #1, the #1 bonus points are calculated by adding the bonus points for each consecutive stay at #1. For example the bonus points for “Silly Love Songs” are calculated by combining bonus points for 4 weeks at #1 and 1 week at #1, which totals 1100. The basis for combining consecutive stays is the placement of “That’s the Way I Like It”, it ranks at #45. Its raw points are 1151 and it got 200 instead of 300 bonus points. Its 2 weeks at the top were not consecutive so it got bonus points for two one week stays at #1. It would have ranked at #36 had it got 300 bonus points for a consecutive two week stay at #1.

Or even the first weekend in December for the cut-off is doable, like it was in the mid-1980s - something more reflective of the calendar year. October is way too early, IMO. I can see mid to late November, but not October. If I could have written to BB in 1975, I'd have asked for a do-over...LOL. The two songs you just mentioned (travesty), and ties ...that was just a weird list overall, and the "goof" at #6. I'm going to re-visit vince's first year-end thread and look for 1975. ETA: After checking aforementioned thread, "Miracles" ranked at #51, and "Who Loves You" was at #60. Now that's more like it.

Yeah, ties were kinda BS. When I do a special, if I get a tie, I have a few tiebreakers. The final one being I pick. Usually I pick the one that is more influential or popular in the time since.
Weeks at #1, in top 10, top 40 and top 100 come first.

The mid 70s represent probably the best examples of do-overs needed to be done in year end countdowns based on the Hot 100. That top 100 of 1975 because of "Some Kind of Wonderful" at #6. And the year before it was a do-over needed not because of a song in the top 10 that should not have been there but for a song that should have been in the top 10 and was not in the survey at all. I am referring to the Opus 74 countdown. Based on the Hot 100 but using a different methodology and survey year than Billboard, they omitted "The Way We Were", Billboard's #1 song of the year, from their list. That is even worse than the Grand Funk mistake IMO.

Next is 1977. I have two versions for this year. This is the first, where I used the same methodology as was used for 1976. That is reverse rank with the summation bonus points. The survey period is 11/6/1976 to 10/29/1977. This was the first year that a frozen week occurred. BB did not count the frozen week so I did not either. Most of the #1 songs in this version ranked out of order compared to BB’s official version. I did get “Tonight’s the Night” at #1 and “You Light Up My Life” was included at #55.
