Yeah, ties were kinda BS. When I do a special, if I get a tie, I have a few tiebreakers. The final one being I pick. Usually I pick the one that is more influential or popular in the time since. Weeks at #1, in top 10, top 40 and top 100 come first. When I had a chart show that went by votes, I settled ties by giving the newer song the higher position.

vince, I am not a fan of this song but am curious. Under how many of the following scenarios does "You Light Up My Life" end up being #1 for either 1977 or 1978? In 1977, is it #1 if the survey year matches what they did in either 1983 or 1988 when the calendar was the same as 1977 and the last week was either 11/26 or 12/3? Is it #1 with or without projected points with the 1983 or 1988 survey year? In 1978, it is #1 if the full chart run is counted as happened in the 80s?

Dukelightning,
Both the methodology and cut off date can affect what song is number one for the year in 1977 or any other year for that matter. "You Light Up My Life" did not rank high or place in the top 100 due to the early cut off. BB's ranking for 1977 only counted its first 3 weeks at #1 and AT40's the first 5 weeks. Had there been a later cut off its chances of ranking higher or at #1 would have been way better. YLUML ranks at #1 for 1977 with most methodologies if it was given projected points or its full chart run is counted. Most methodologies will have it ranking at #1 for 1978 if its full chart run is counted. YLUML does better with methodologies that favor a lot of weeks at #1 over longevity. "How Deep Is Your Love" does outranks YLUML with the methodologies used by BB in the mid and late 80's, but not with AT40's 1982 methodology.

This is the second version for 1977. This one is closer to BB’s official ranking, with one big exception, #1 and #2 are flipped. The survey period is 11/6/1976 to 10/29/1977. The methodology is reverse rank with a different bonus points for #1s. The #1 bonus points are 25 points for each week at #1 plus the method described for 1976 with the sum multiplied by 25 instead of 100. It can be calculated with the formula ((n^2+3*n)/2)*25, where n = the number of weeks at #1. There are a few records that are off, but this was the closet I could get. On this version “You Light Up My Life” drops out and “Devil’s Gun” moves in at #100.

Dukelightning, Both the methodology and cut off date can affect what song is number one for the year in 1977 or any other year for that matter. They should go with the year a song peaked and take the whole run. Even with HDIYL being on the hot hundred into April 1978. Peaked in 77, so it would go there along with YLUML.

Yes Fred Bronson does it that way in his HOTTEST HOT 100 HITS book. The top 3 of 1977 are #3.."I Just Want to be Your Everything", #2 "How Deep is Your Love" and #1 "You Light up My Life". Of course it is always easier and more accurate to do it after the fact like he did it.

For 1978 I am posting two versions. The first version uses the same methodology as was used for 1976. The survey period runs from 11/5/1977 to 10/28/1978 and the frozen week is not counted. One thing you will notice with my version vs BB’s is the records are the same 100 records, but the ranking is different. BB appeared to have weighted records in the later part of the survey period, but there is no explanation as to why in the year-end issue. I do not believe there was a major change to the methodology to compile the weekly charts during 1978, so I do not see a reason for weighting in such a short time period. Another major difference is I got “Night Fever” at #1 instead of “Shadow Dancing”.

This is the second version for 1978. The survey period is 11/5/1977 to 10/28/1978. This version uses reverse rank with heavily weighted bonus points. The #1 bonus points are 100 points for each week at #1 plus the summation of weeks at #1 multiplied by 100. The bonus points can be calculated with the following formula ((n^2+3*n)/2)*100, where n equals the weeks at #1. A lot of the #1’s came closer to where BB ranked them, but the overall chart is not the same. The top 13 was the same as BB’s official ranking with the exception of the flipping of “Shadow Dancing” and “Night Fever”.

Next is 1979. I was able to get a 100% match with BB’s official ranking. The methodology is the exactly same as what was used by BB for 1976, reverse rank with summation #1 bonus points. The survey period gets really weird here, running from 10/21/1978 to 10/20/1979. If I did not get an exact match I probably would have shifted the survey period a couple of weeks later for a re-rank. One major flaw with the methodology is the way the #1 bonus point are computed and it shows in this ranking because a lot of records hit #1 fell out and returned. Number one bonus points are not awarded equally for a consecutive stay and non-consecutive stay at #1. The best example of this is “Le Freak” only getting 800 bonus for 5 non-consecutive weeks at #1 while “Bad Girls” got 1500 bonus points for its 5 consecutive weeks. “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?” and “Reunited” both got 1000 bonus points for 4 weeks at #1, more than “Le Freak”. “I Will Survive” and “Hot Stuff” each got 400 bonus points but it did not affect their position.

Now into the 80’s. 1980 had the weirdest survey period ever, 10/6/1979 to 9/27/1980. Somebody at BB must have gone on vacation or they were short staffed. While a #1 songs that peaked in October 1979 was included, #1’s peaking in October 1980 were not included. No wonder AT40 did their own year-end chart for 1980. The methodology was reverse rank with 100 bonus points for each week at #1. I got an exact match with BB’s official ranking for positions #37 through #100. A couple of #1’s messed things up in the top 36. “Magic” dropped from #3 official ranking to #6, and “Upside Down” dropped from #18 in the official ranking to #36.

Here is a second version for 1980. I included the unrepresented weeks of October 1980 and took out the weeks that were also in the 1979 survey period. This survey period runs from 10/27/1979 to 10/25/1980 and covers the period from the cut off of 1979 to the beginning of the 1981 survey period. The methodology is still reverse rank with 100 bonus points for each week at #1. This version gets “Another One Bites The Dust” into the ranking at #52 and takes out "Rise".

No wonder AT40 did their own year-end chart for 1980. Theirs may have been better representative of 1980, though it wasn't entirely without flaws either: how the heck does "Pilot of the Airwaves" get left off their survey entirely while a song like "Old-Fashion Love" - which peaked at #20 and does not even rank on either of the above computations! - gets in? Makes me wonder if maybe that was a case like what would happen three years later on That Week In 1983 ("Pieces of Ice" Vs. Charlie's "It's Inevitable").

Mike,
The methodology AT40 used in 1980 favored longer stays in the to 40. AT40's 1980 methodology is the same as what I have been referring to as reverse rank with 100 bonus points for each week at #1, except AT40 did not count positions below 40. "Old Fashion Love" was in the top 40 11 weeks and it had 809 points while "Pilot of the Airwaves" was in the top 40 10 weeks and had 795 points.

For 1981, I almost got an exact match with BB’s official ranking. The differences were “The Tide Is High” and “Just the Two of Us” flipped and “Ain’t Even Done With The Night” moved up five notches. The survey period was 11/1/1980 to 10/24/1981. The methodology was reverse rank with the summation of weeks at #1 multiplied by 100. Unlike previous years that used the summation bonus point methodology, consecutive and non-consecutive stays at #1 were treated equally. That gets “Bette Davis Eyes” above “Endless Love”. Either way the placement of “9 To 5” is not affected as it ends up in the same position whether it gets 200 or 300 bonus points.
