The third version for 1963 is an attempt to match a revision BB did several years later. The revision was likely done for research packet that BB sold beginning in 1970 up to about 1982. I suspect BB did the revision around 1969 – 1970. 1966 was also revised and I will get to that one later. The survey period is 1/5/1963 to 12/28/1963, the calendar year of 1963. The ranking was done by reverse rank with no bonus points. “Washington Square”, “It’s All Right”, and “She’s A Fool” all ranked very high on BB’s revision. They ranked lower in my attempted match. Only “She’s A Fool”’s chart run ran into 1964, and its full chart run does not support BB’s position. Likely during the re-rank process BB gave these songs extra points by mistake.

Now the Beatle years, starting with 1964. This was my attempt to match BB’s 1964 YE Pop Singles chart. The methodology was reverse rank with no bonus points. The survey period was 1/4/1964 to 12/12/1964. I had some discrepancies. “Hello Dolly” came in at #1. BB left off “Fun, Fun, Fun” by the Beach Boys which I got at #60, and “California Sun” by the Rivieras that I got at #74.

This is a second version for 1964 where I added bonus points of 100 points for each week at #1. I kept the same survey period of 1/4/1964 to 12/12/1964. This gets the Beatles back at #1. One of the biggest changes was “Can’t Buy Me Love” moving from #52 up to #9.

This is my attempt to match BB’s YE pop singles chart for 1965. The survey period was 1/2/1965 to 10/30/1965. The methodology was reverse rank without bonus points. There are a few discrepancies from BB’s official ranking, but most were in the same vicinity in the ranking.

Due to the early cut off and low ranking or no show for many #1 songs, I did a second 1965 version based on reverse rank with 100 bonus points for each week at #1. I extended the survey period to mid December to make it similar to the 1964 and 1966 survey periods. It now runs from 1/2/1965 to 12/11/1965. The changes adds six #1 songs to the top 100. The highest is “Yesterday” which now ranks at #7.

Now for 1966. I will post three versions for this year. This is the first, my attempt to match BB originally published version. The methodology is reverse rank with no bonus points. The survey period is 1/1/1966 to 12/10/1966. There are a few discrepancies from the official chart. “Working in a Coal Mine” came in at #19 on BB’s ranking while it only came in at #68 on my ranking. “Sounds of Silence” made my ranking at #100 while it did not make BB’s list.

The third version is an attempt to match BB’s revised year end pop singles chart for 1966. The survey period matched the calendar year running from 1/1/1966 to 12/31/1966. The methodology was reverse rank with 100 bonus point for each week at #1. I got a 98% match with BB. “Shapes of Things” and “Zorba the Greek” flip flopped, but otherwise the ranking is the same as BB’s ranking.

For 1967, I have just one version which is an attempt to match BB’s official ranking. The methodology is reverse rank with 100 bonus points for each week at #1. This was the first year BB awarded bonus points to #1 songs on their originally published version. The survey period is 1/7/1967 to 12/16/1967. There are several discrepancies. Songs that BB left out were “Sock It To Me Baby” that I have at #71 and “C’mon Marianne” that I have at #99.

Now for 1968. I only have one version. This is an attempt to match BB’s official ranking. The methodology is reverse rank with 100 bonus points for each week at #1. I used BB’s survey period which runs from 1/6/1968 to 12/21/1968. This is the closest BB ever came to having a survey period match the calendar year for an originally published year end chart. It is also likely why the year end pop singles chart for 1968 was in the 1/11/1969 issue of BB. There were a few discrepancies with the official ranking.

This is my attempt to match BB’s year end pop singles chart for 1969. The methodology used was reverse rank without bonus points. I used BB’s survey period that ran from 1/4/1969 to 12/13/1969. There were a few discrepancies. The most notable is I got “The Boxer” by Simon & Garfunkel at #88 while it was not included in BB’s official ranking.

This is a second version I did for 1969. The methodology is reverse rank with 100 bonus points for each week at #1. The survey period is 1/4/1969 to 12/13/1969. This puts “In The Year 2525” and “Get Back” into the top 10. Without bonus points those two songs ranked low considering they spent multiple weeks at #1 and their full chart runs were in the survey period. “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” moved up from the #85 to #14.

On to the 70’s. This is my attempt to match BB’s year-end pop singles chart for 1970. I had a 97% match. The points were off for “Mississippi Queen” knocking it down two notches from BB’s official ranking. The survey period was 1/3/1970 to 11/28/1970. The methodology was reverse rank with 100 bonus points for each week at #1. This same methodology was used through 1975.

Again, great job Vince. When I look at the 1970 year end chart I am flabbergasted that a song that peaked at #34 (78-I WANT TO TAKE YOU HIGHER-IKE & TINA TURNER) would be considered one of the Top 100 songs of the year. I always liked year end countdowns as they reminded me of most (if not all) of the songs that made the Top 10 for that year--and then maybe a few songs that made the Top 20. However, I would never consider a song that never made the Top 30 one of the top songs of the year. OK--I am done now. 'DJ' Joe Cash Box Countdown
