Next is 1982. The survey period is 10/31/1981 to 10/30/1982. The methodology is reverse rank with summation #1 bonus points based on consecutive weeks at #1. Unlike 1981, BB went back to calculating the bonus points based on combined consecutive stays for non-consecutive #1s. This was based on the placement of “Abracadabra” at #9. It got 200 bonus points instead of 300 like other 2 weeks #1s. I got exact match with BB for positions #18 to #100. “Key Largo” picked up more points ranking at #12. “Eye of the Tiger” dropped down to #4.

I'm kind of curious about "Heart Attack". Since its point split certainly caused it to fall short of both the 1982 and 1983 surveys, how many points does its full run leave it with?

Mike,
Going by BB's methodology from 1982 and 1983, "Heat Attack"'s full chart run has 1398 points not counting the frozen week of 1/1/1983. With the frozen week counted it has 1453 points.

Now for 1983. The survey period is 11/6/1982 to 10/29/1983. The methodology is reverse rank with summation #1 bonus points. It was not possible to tell if the #1 bonus points were different for consecutive and non-consecutive stays at #1. “Down Under” is the only record affected and it ranks at #4 regardless of whether it has 2504 points or 2804 points. This one I got a 94% match. Positions #39 to #44 were out of BB’s order.

Next is 1984. This year there were changes to the methodology and the survey period which ended in mid-November. Reverse rank was used for the raw points, but now bonus points were awarded to positions in the top 10. BB described it as three tier bonus points. 100 points were given for each week at #1, 50 points were given for each week at positions #2 – #5, and 25 points were given for each week at positions #6 - #10. The survey period was 11/5/1983 to 11/17/1984. For the first time the frozen week was counted by counting the week of 12/24/1983 twice to compensate for no chart on 12/31/1983. I was able to match positions #4 to #71 with BB official list. I got “On The Dark Side” at #72 and BB had it at #94. It had a split chart run and I think BB only credited one run. As for the top 3, BB seems to have over credited “When Doves Cry” . If the 1983 methodology had been used “When Doves Cry “ would have had the most points.

1985 is the first time BB counted a records full chart funs instead of just performance in a defined survey period. AT40 counted full chart runs since their first time they did their own ranking in 1972. BB methodology was reverse rank with tiered bonus points just like in 1984. BB credited the full chart run to records ascending on the 11/17/1984 chart or later. They did estimates for records that did not complete their chart run by the end of the year. Records ascending on the 12/7/1985 chart were held over to the next year. I was not going to arbitrarily make up point so I credited records through the last survey of the year. This will account for some differences between my ranking and BB’s official ranking. For the frozen week of 12/29/1984, 1/5/1985 is credited twice as it gave a closer match to BB official ranking. Had 11/22/1984 been credited twice, “Like A Virgin” would have been #1.

After 31 years and 8 days of being side-by-side, "Loverboy" and "Lovergirl" are now broken up. How sad. Haha, just kidding, vince - absolutely phenomenal work with these. Thanks for your time and efforts, and for sharing! Looking forward to the remaining years.

I recall that I posted an alternate survey period computation (calendar year) for 1985 several years ago and want to reference that, but want to double-check my point totals before I do.
For now, though, I'll bring up "Purple Rain". Simply put, the only reason this was left off the year-end surveys completely was due to Billboard's disqualifying it from the 1985 survey - likely due to being bulletless on 11/17/84, the end of 1984's survey period and beginning of 1985's. Never mind that it was #2 for 11/17 and 11/24.
By my count, it didn't have enough points to rank in 1984 - no surprise there, given that 11/17 was just its 7th week on the entire Hot 100. Its point total was still impressive for that short lifespan though, 865 points.
For its full lifespan, however, it would have had 1460 points in total (using the 1/5 chart twice as vince did above; when using 12/29 twice instead, the total is 1478), which would place it at #64 in vince's 1985 survey.

For 1986, BB more or less did the same thing they did for 1985. The methodology is reverse rank with three tiered bonus points. The survey period, just like 1985, includes records full chart runs. BB was not clear about the start date of their 1986 year end pop singles chart. The 1986 year end issue had the survey period as running from 11/17/1985 to 12/6/1986. There is no chart dated 11/17/1985. It looks like BB actually started the survey period with either 11/30/1985 or 12/7/1985. For records at the end of the year, I did not want to make up projected points so I credited records through the last chart of 1986 which will account for some differences from BB’s official ranking. This time BB counted the week of 12/28/1985 twice for the frozen week on 1/4/1986.

Hey, vince - I wonder if 11/17/1985 is really the chart week of 11/23/1985. I remember Shadoe mentioning in the credits of the 1989 year-end, he said the chart period was from 12/4/1988 to 12/2/1989. The latter was a chart date, but the former was the day after the chart period for 1988 ended. Not often we hear it mentioned that way, instead of using the first chart of 12/10/1988. So I'm wondering if this is the case with the 1986 year-end. My thoughts, anyway...

Next is 1987. BB had a big change in their methodology were they switched form a methodology based on reverse rank to a complex inverse point system. Exactly what they did is not possible to reproduce without inside information.
I was able to come up with a complex inverse point system that estimates what BB did get and most records within a few positions of their position on the official chart. What I came up with awards a position 95% of the points of the next higher position. For example #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 95 points, and #3 gets 90.25 points. The point for a position can be calculated using the following formula: points = 100*.95^(position-1). Bonus points are not awarded with this methodology. After totaling a records points they are rounded to the nearest whole number. Records ascending on 12/6/1986 were included. Records ascending on 12/5/1987 were held over to 1988. The frozen week of 1/3/1987 was covered by counting 12/27/1986 twice. Just as BB I counted a records full chart run. Instead of estimating points for records late in the year I credited through the last survey of the year.

Onwiththecountdown, 11/23/1985 may have been the week BB meant to identify. What made it confusing was "Separate Lives" was still climbing the chart on 11/23 & 11/30, and it was included in 1985. Then "Never" climbed to #4 on 12/7 without a bullet and it was included in 1986 while as Mike mentioned earlier "Purple Rain" was not bulleted on 11/17/1984 and was not included in 1985.

vince - My guess on "Separate Lives" was that since it peaked prior to 1985's cut-off date of 12/7, that BB included it in 1985, even if the 1986 survey period overlapped it some - in which I think AT40/BB didn't want songs to appear in two year-end surveys. (Which has happened quite a bit in the last 20-plus years.) I think in the case of "Never", because it was still ascending on 12/7 (even bulletless), that it was held over to 1986. Just guesses on my part. Glad that AT40 did their own chart for 1984, otherwise we'd have never heard "Purple Rain" on a year-end countdown. It was just bad timing for it to peak when it did, with all the rules in place. Even if, let's just say, "PR" took 2-3 months to descend through the 40 after its peak, it still wouldn't have factored in the rankings, even though its point total clearly says it should make the top 100 of the year (and as illustrated, it would have). I'm not really a fan of that rule. Great example there, Mike.

On to 1988. BB used a complex inverse point system based on the average number of points a record got for the positions on the weekly survey. These points were not made available to BB’s readers. I used the same methodology that I used for 1987. It gave a ranking that was close to BB’s official survey likely because the point distribution was similar. The survey period was from 12/5/1987 to 12/3/1988. Records ascending on 12/5/1987 are credited for their full chart run. Records descending on 12/3/1988 were estimated by BB, I credited those records to the end of the year. Records ascending on 12/3/1988 were held over to 1989. The frozen week of 1/2/1988 was credited by counting the week of 12/26/1987 twice.

Now for 1989. BB used the same methodology they used for 1988. I will use the methodology I came up with to estimate BB’s late 80’s rankings. Records were credited for their full chart run with those ascending on 12/3/1988 or later and records descending on 2/2/1989 included. Record ascending on 12/2/1989 were scheduled to be held over but there was a change in 1990 that I will discuss later. Records were credited for their full chart run . BB estimated points for records late in the year. I credited though the last survey of the year. The week of 12/24/1988 was counted twice to credit the frozen week of 12/31/1988. A lot has been discussed in other threads about “Look Away” being BB’s #1 song of 1989. It was already descending by the last week of 1988, but the methodology and crediting songs for their full chart runs is what resulted in “Look Away”s placement. When I applied AT40’s methodology to 1989 with a similar survey period, I got “Miss You Much” at #1.
