Moving on into the 90’s. This is my attempt to match BB’s ranking for 1990. BB used their complex inverse point system based on the average number of points a records received for a position. I used the same methodology I have used starting with 1987 to estimate their rankings. The big change here is BB went back to a defined survey period, no longer crediting a record's (or cassette single by 1990) full chart run. This may have been because of the “Look Away” fiasco in 1989 or possible in anticipation of the up coming switch to Soundscan, or both. The survey period was 11/18/1989 to 11/17/1990.

This is the last one and the last year before the switch to Soundscan, 1991. I used the same complex inverse point methodology as 1990. The survey period is 11/24/1990 to 11/23/199, with singles only credited in the survey period.

Here are some key discrepancies and differences from the AT40 years that I will highlight. vince noted that the following key hits were either way too high or too low(omitted from the rankings). "You Are Everything" was a top 10 hit that should have easily made the survey in 1972 and did not. A couple of #1 hits from 1974 were omitted..."Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe" and "You Haven't Done Nothin". And "Some Kind of Wonderful" seems to be the biggest mistake by Billboard during the AT40 years, sitting at #6 for 1975 when it should have been #75. Several years would have had different #1 songs of the year if other years' methodologies were used or if the tabulations were correct. I will list the year and the song that should/could have been #1.
1977 or 1978...You Light Up My Life (Not listed by vince in a tabulated listing but he answered my question about how it could be #1) 1978...Night Fever 1981...Endless Love 1984...When Doves Cry (I thought it WAS the #1 song of the year in their year end issue btw) 1985...Like a Virgin 1989...Miss You Much
Great work vince. You are a valuable member of this board.

One other thing Billboard's year end lists with all their faults and omissions were better than Cash Box's year end surveys.

I never tried to figure out how Cashbox did their year end surveys and I am am sure just like BB they had methodology changes and survey period changes through the years.
A couple of major oddities do stick out on some of CB's year end charts from the 1960's. In 1964 "Blue Velvet" is #8 even though it peaked in Sept. 1963. Chart runs were short then. I doubt it was still on the chart in 1964. The other oddity is in 1969 where "Easy To Be Hard" was both #12 and #31 for the year. That is absolutely amazing. I can see how a small error of a few positions may slip by, but these CB examples or BB's 1975 fiasco makes me wonder why nobody rechecked the calculations.

Hey Vince,
Here are a few other odd year end chart observations via Cash Box's year end charts:
In 1970--the following four songs did not make the year chart (although they fell with in the survey period):
Ain't No Mountain High Enough-Diana Ross (#1 last week of September 1970) Lookin' Out My Back Door-Credence Clearwater Revival (#1 the first week of October) 25 or 6 to 4-Chicago (peaked at #6 in mid-September) Hitchin' A Ride-Vanity Fare (reached #4 in June 1970)
Also the 1976 year end chart left off two #1's from that year:
Let Your Love Flow-Bellamy Brothers (#1 the first week of May) Lowdown-Boz Scaggs (#1 the first week of October)
It's too bad that all these year end charts leave off songs as I always liked the idea of the year end re-caps as a good way to remember all the hits of a certain year.

On last night's The Diner with Lou Simon on SiriusXM, a listener submitted an intriguing chart trivia question. Part of the answer was "I Am Woman" by Helen Reddy. This song is notably absent from the 1972 list. The chart points must have been split between '72 and '73. Right, Vince?

This song is notably absent from the 1972 list. The chart points must have been split between '72 and '73. Right, Vince? "I Am Woman"'s points were split between survey periods. BB's 1972 survey period ran through 11/18/1972 and the 1973 survey period began on 11/25/1972. Going by the methodology used in the early 70's, "I Am Woman " has 659 points in 1972 and 900 points in 1973 including its #1 bonus points. It just missed BB's 1973 survey since #100 was "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" had 902 points in the 1973 survey period. AT40 did not include "I Am Woman" in their 1973 survey because it was descending on 12/16/1973.

Vince - Do you have any idea how AT40 came up with the Top 50 songs for the 1970s decade that they ran the first weekend of 1980? Based on your numbers, what would be the Top 100 songs for the 1970s decade?

Mitchm,
There has been some discussion on other threads about how AT40 did their decade end chart for the 70s. I am of the opinion it was not based on a mathematical formula. There are too many weird discrepancies. It probably was based on estimates by the AT40 staff.
The link DJJoe posted has a Top 100 of the 70s based on AT40's standardized ranking methodology they created in 1982. That is probably the closest you will get with a methodology using a mathematical formula.
Thanks, DJJoe for posting the link.

Its the time of year to bump this up. In addition, I am adding a few alternate versions 1979 through 1982 when BB found it necessary to begin their survey period prior to the first week of November. Here is an alternate version for 1979 with the survey period running from 11/4/78 through 10/27/79. BB's actual survey period was 10/21/78 to 10/20/79. On this version I credited #1 bonus points equally whether or not the stay at #1 was consecutive

At first, it's surprising that "Let's Get Serious" comes in at #28 for 1980, "This Is It" at #32, and "Brass in Pocket" at #42. Then you dig a little deeper and see that they all stayed on the Hot 100 for at least 22 weeks (23 for Jermaine).
