In a few weeks it will be time for year-end countdowns. I have posted various scenarios of year-end countdowns over the past few years. This year I am posting after the fact countdowns covering the calendar year. A single’s entire chart runs will be counted even if it started in the previous year or ran into the following year. Singles are placed in the year they first hit their peak position. These countdowns will be more comparable to Fred Bronson’s year end countdowns rather than BB’s or AT40’s. My earlier posts were generally what the AT40 staff may have come up with if they did their own ranking or what BB might have come up with if they checked their calculations. The official countdowns done by AT40 or BB had to be ready by end of the year which did not allow for a survey period that matched the calendar year. BB had to have it ready for their year-end issue along with rankings of their other charts and top artist rankings. AT40 had to have their year-end show ready by the end of December. Because of all this songs peaking around October to December depending on the survey period frequently got penalized. The year-end countdowns I will post in this thread are all based on AT40’s 1982 formula. To basically summarize the methodology it is a reverse rank of the top 50 and a reverse rank of the top 10 with #1 bonus points that can be calculated by the following formula: Bonus points = ((n)^2 + 3 * n)*5, where n = weeks at #1 For more details on the methodology please see the attached memo. Rank Formula.pdf (134.57 KB) I plan to do posts for 1955 to 1989. Starting with 1955. The ranking is Based on BB’s Best Sellers Chart. It includes records peaking on the issue dates of 1/1/1955 through 12/31/1955. The Top 50 of 1955 Points POS. It's 1961. The eligibility period is the issue dates 1/9/1961 through 12/25/1961. Singles reaching their peak on those dates are eligible. One interesting thing here is "I Fall To Pieces" ranked at #2 on BB's official survey. Here it ranks at #99.

On to 1962. "The Twist" takes the number one spot, and that is only counting its second chart run. Despite its 5 weeks at #1 "Big Girls Don't Cry" did not make BB's official survey because it was late in the year. Here BGDC is #3. Singles peaking on BB's issue date of 1/6/1962 through 12/29/1962 are eligible. Just to note, except for the first week of 1962 BB's issue and chart dates were the same.

Vince, I greatly appreciate these posts, especially as you progress into the late 60s. I can't imagine the time involved to coordinate the yearly lists ... nevermind, yes I can!
But I can't resist noting the following:
*It's interesting to see some #1 songs ended up ranked in the 30s for some of the yearly tabulations.
*Regarding the 1968 list, it appears that two double-sided hit singles (The Beatles' "Hey Jude"/"Revolution" and Aretha Franklin's "Say A Little Prayer"/"House That Jack Built") took up four places among the Hot 100. I understand that Billboard ranked the flipsides individually in 1968, but if you combined the flipside discs as one Top 100 entry, positions #99 and #100 would open up. What two songs would've then been among the list?
*With a changed double-sided hits policy on the Hot 100 in 1969, I'm curious to see your tabulation and how it affects The Beatles and CCR.
Nice work.
