I wonder where "Object Of My Desire" ends up at your 1985 list. The song made the BB's Top 100 of 1986, although only peaked at #25.

I see that We Are The World by USA for Africa placed at #4 on the 1985 year end chart--but it was only #20 on the official Billboard year end chart. By the way, it was #1 on the Cash Box year end survey.

I wonder where "Object Of My Desire" ends up at your 1985 list. The song made the BB's Top 100 of 1986, although only peaked at #25. "Object of My Desire" had 266 points. I did not rank down that low, but I think it would make the top 120 on the 1985 list.

^From an AT40 history point of view, Steve Winwood's "Roll With It" was a fitting number one record for the year as it topped the weekly charts on both Casey's last countdown as well as Shadoe's first.

Vince, you're doing a great job with these rankings once again. But I'm curious about a song from my favorite year in music, 1978. (I'm looking like I'm way behind here, I know.) It's "Falling," by LeBlanc and Carr.
The Hot 100 of 4/1/78 shows it peaking at #13 in its 25th week on. Is that a typo or was this an ironically titled song?
And where would "Falling" rank for the year? It seems like with that kind of long chart run, it ought to be in the top 100 at least. AT40 had it at #79 at year's end.
I also checked in the book Ranking the 70s by Dann Isbell and Bill Carroll, which is based on Cash Box but also uses the calendar year. They have it at #1003 for the decade.

Doofus67,
"Falling" has 278 points and ranks at #102 on my list for 1978. It did better in BB's ranking because BB counted all weeks on the Hot 100. Using AT40's 1982 methodology, which is what I used here, only weeks in the top 50 are counted.
BB did have the correct number of weeks on the chart for "Falling", 25 as of 4/1/1978. The song lived up to its name beginning on 4/8/1978. It went from 13-31-50-97-off. It spent a total of 28 weeks on BB's Hot 100, but only 10 weeks in the top 40.
I believe the methodology used in "Ranking the 70's" counts weeks in the top 100. I do not know how "Falling" did on Cash Box.

I believe the methodology used in "Ranking the 70's" counts weeks in the top 100. I do not know how "Falling" did on Cash Box. I have an actual typed copy of that 1982 formula, straight from the AT40 staff. It was my little treat for sending them my own top 100 list for that year. More notes on "Falling": Lenny LeBlanc and Pete Carr were studio musicians based in the South, primarily Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The late, great Paul Davis hailed from Meridian, Mississippi. Another sweet ballad, Paul's "I Go Crazy," was dropping from its #7 peak to #28 on the same second weekend in April that "Falling" was falling #13 to #31. Also, Wings' "With a Little Luck" was soaring from #57 to #17. In Cash Box, "Falling" peaked at #11 and spent 27 weeks on the top 100. In Record World, it got as high as #12 and rode the chart for 23 weeks.
