Vince, I greatly appreciate these posts, especially as you progress into the late 60s. I can't imagine the time involved to coordinate the yearly lists ... nevermind, yes I can! But I can't resist noting the following: *It's interesting to see some #1 songs ended up ranked in the 30s for some of the yearly tabulations. *Regarding the 1968 list, it appears that two double-sided hit singles (The Beatles' "Hey Jude"/"Revolution" and Aretha Franklin's "Say A Little Prayer"/"House That Jack Built") took up four places among the Hot 100. I understand that Billboard ranked the flipsides individually in 1968, but if you combined the flipside discs as one Top 100 entry, positions #99 and #100 would open up. What two songs would've then been among the list? *With a changed double-sided hits policy on the Hot 100 in 1969, I'm curious to see your tabulation and how it affects The Beatles and CCR. Nice work. Pete, For 1968 I got "Suzie Q" - CCR at #101 and "Do You Know The way To San Jose" - Dionne Warwick at #102. 1969 was a little tricky. Most of the year sides were ranked separate until 11/29/1969. I ranked the sides separate unless the peaked on or after 11/29/1969. I used whatever side had the higher position before BB combined the sides. "Come Together"/"Something" and "Down On The Corner"/"Fortunate Son" are combined, but "Get Back"/ "Don't Let Me Down" is not.

Looking at the 1970 list, it appears that the trend for Top 40 stations to spotlight double-sided hits peaked that year. If you include the Jackson 5's "The Love You Save" to the list ("I Found That Girl" was added as the flipside to the Hot 100 while still in the Top 10), there are 10 double-sided singles altogether on Vince's tabulation. I don't believe any other year can make that claim.

I don't believe any other year can make that claim. I think a lot of record labels started releasing the promo singles with only the side they wanted to plug around 1971 / 1972. Usually mono one side and stereo on the other. That may have contributed to the drop off in double sided hits.

Wow! Slippin' Into Darkness by War barely makes the list at #100--it did much better on both Billboard's and AT40's year end list.

While reviewing Vince's 1972 list, I recalled this memory...
During my senior year in high school (1972-73), I was enrolled in a 1st-year radio/TV "career" class. To enhance the learning experience, the school housed an FCC-licensed, educational radio station where some 2nd-year students had their own after school radio programs. In December 1972, I spoke with the station's general manager about scheduling airtime for me to count down the top songs of 1972. He was receptive to that but he needed 3 things from me in advance -- a song list, a radio show script, and the records.
Using Billboard charts from November 1971 to November 1972, I assembled a Top 40 year-end list. And I wrote the script. Because the station did not play music (other than records that 2nd-year students brought from home), I was unable to locate copies of all 40 singles. So my 1972 year-end special never happened. But I still have the script. And here's my list.
1. Alone Again (Naturally) – Gilbert O'Sullivan 2. The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face – Roberta Flack 3. American Pie – Don McLean 4. Without You – Nilsson 5. I Can See Clearly Now – Johnny Nash 6. A Horse With No Name – America 7. Candy Man – Sammy Davis Jr. 8. Baby Don’t Get Hooked On Me – Mac Davis 9. Lean On Me – Bill Withers 10. Brand New Key – Melanie 11. My Ding A Ling – Chuck Berry 12. Brandy – Looking Glass 13. Let’s Stay Together – Al Green 14. Oh Girl – Chi-Lites 15. I’ll Take You There – Staple Singers 16. Song Sung Blue – Neil Diamond 17. Heart Of Gold – Neil Young 18. Black & White – Three Dog Night 19. Ben – Michael Jackson 20. I Gotcha – Joe Tex 21. Too Late To Turn Back Now – Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose 22. Rockin’ Robin – Michael Jackson 23. Outa-Space – Billy Preston 24. Long Cool Woman – Hollies 25. Use Me – Bill Withers 26. Hurting Each Other – Carpenters 27. Nights In White Satin – Moody Blues 28. Burning Love – Elvis Presley 29. The Lion Sleeps Tonight – Robert John 30. Precious And Few – Climax 31. I’m Still In Love With You – Al Green 32. If Loving You Is Wrong – Luther Ingram 33. Family Affair – Sly & The Family Stone 34. Saturday In The Park – Chicago 35. Back Stabbers – O’Jays 36. Everybody Plays The Fool – Main Ingredient 37. Betcha By Golly Wow -- Stylistics 38. Puppy Love – Donny Osmond 39. Sunshine – Jonathan Edwards 40. Nice To Be With You – Gallery
By the way, I used a very simple tabulation process -- all the number ones were at the top, followed by all the number two songs, etc. ... But I don't remember why "Family Affair" was listed at #33, other than it was a 1971 carryover.

Next it is 1973. Records peaking 1/6/1973 through 12/29/1973 are eligible. I did not forget about "Why Me". It just came in at #46. All 27 #1 songs outranked "Why Me".

^Anyone comparing national year-end surveys back in 1973 found that Kris Kristofferson's "Why Me" was ranked... ... at #2 on AT40 ... at #6 on Billboard ... and nowhere to be found among Cash Box's Top 100
