The lowest ranking song that hit #1 on the weekly chart came in at #65 for the year. Crazy 1974! Better look again. It's #77, Barry White. With Vince's comprehensive tabulations, it's hard to believe any #1 song would rank lower than #77.

Just think: By the early 80s, the chart had slowed down so much that the #77 song for the year would be one that barely scratched the top ten.

Wrong again. #77 for 1980 was "Pilot of the Airwaves." 1981, "Feels So Right." 1982, "Yesterday's Songs." Amazing.

On to 1976. Records peaking from 1/3/1976 through 12/25/1976 are eligible. On top is BB's #1 single of 1977.
This is the first year that the frozen week comes into play. I averaged the week before and after to get the position for the frozen week. If the number one song changed on the frozen week I gave each song credit for a half week at #1. For example, "Tonight's The Night" was credited as having 7.5 weeks at #1 and "You Don't Have To Be A Star" was credited with 1.5 weeks at #1. YDHTBAS will be on the 1977 list. If the same single was #1 before and after the frozen week, such as "How Deep Is Your Love", it is credited as having a full week at #1 for the frozen week.

Lowest ranking #1 in 1976: "Convoy," #54. I'm sure of it this time. Just 11 weeks on AT40, half of "A Fifth of Beethoven"'s tally.

Next is 1981. Singles peaking from 1/10/1981 through 12/26/1981 are eligible. Three of the longest running #1s of the pre-Soundscan rock era competed for the top spot. Olivia Newton-John's 10 weeks at #1 got the top spot. The top 3 account for a total of 28 weeks at #1. This is interesting, #100 matched both BB's and AT40's rankings.

Olivia Newton-John's 1,671 points with "Physical" just barely beat Debby Boone, who had 1,667 points. JUST FOUR POINTS! Now I'll be able to sleep tonight. Thanks, Vince.
