I know this is kind of out of season, but I didn't have a chance to get this together by the end of last year. So I am posting it now.
From 1987 to 1991 BB used a methodology to rank the year end charts where points were awarded in a complex inverse relation to the chart position. What exactly BB did is not known. I came up with a complex inverse point system that estimates what BB did. Most records rank within a few positions of their position on the official chart when my methodology is applied to the charts for 1987 through 1991.
What I came up with awards a position 95% of the points of the next higher position. For example #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 95 points, and #3 gets 90.25 points. The points for a position can be calculated using the following formula: points = 100*.95^(position-1). Bonus points are not awarded with this methodology.
What I will post here are the rankings for 1970 through 1986 using this complex inverse point formula. This will give an alternate look at the year end pop singles chart as the rankings are based on a complex inverse point system instead of reverse rank.
The eligibility periods will roughly run from the first week of December of the previous year to the last week of November for the given year. Records ascending in December will be held over to the next year. The cut off will be the last week of the year. This is to simulate having the ranking ready by the year's end.
Starting with the ranking for 1970. The eligibility period is 11/29/69 though 11/28/70. 11/29/69 is when BB changed over on the Hot 100 from ranking sides separately to combining sides. Records full chart runs are counted up to a cut off of the last survey of the year.

Love that #1 song of 1972! 1971's top dog (no pun intended) is also great, and the BJ Thomas #1 song of 1970 isn't bad either.

Next up is 1973. Marvin Gaye has the top song instead of Tony Orlando and Dawn. "Why Me" is no where near the top 10 since it ranks at #59. The eligibility period is 12/2/72 through 11/24/73. Records are credited for their full chart runs up to the cut off on 12/29/73. Records peaking in December are held over.

Now for the '80s, here is 1980. Queen gets the top spot. "Another One Bites The Dust" didn't even make BB's official 1980 list. The eligibility period is 12/1/79 through 11/29/80. "Lady" was still ascending on 12/6/80 so it is held over.

Love, love, love these, vince. Great work!!! Due to the strange BB chart periods for 1979 and 1980, these rankings look much better and more accurately representing those years. I'm thankful AT40 also did their own chart for 1980; their year-end rankings were a much better representation than BB's. Looking forward to the rest of these!

Here is 1981. Kim Carnes get the top spot matching BB's #1. Andy Gibb is at #100 also matching BB's official chart. The rest is different. The eligibility period is 12/6/80 through 11/28/81. Records ascending on 12/5/81 are held over.
