Vince, I assume the point total of I'm A Believer by the Monkees is for the total chart run, which came mostly during 1967--which in my mind should make the song #1 for 1967, not 1966.
Otherwise great work,
DJ Joe

Yeah...that's the exact scenario for which it feels like these tabulations represent the top songs FROM a given year, rather than OF a given year, if that makes any sense. It's the same thing that the movie industry does - they rank the top-grossing movies for as long as they made money, they never stop the clock at the end of a calendar year. Which I suppose can make some sense for their business model...but it's like they push that such-and-such movie would be the highest-grossing movie OF a given year even though it might have hit theaters on like December 27 or something and then made a ridiculous gonzo amount of money all inside the next calendar year, but because it was released inside of Year 1, it's the highest-grossing movie of Year 1 and not Year 2. That's always just felt false to me. It also sort of plays into what I did when I was compiling the 1993 and 1994 tabulations in the other thread - for 1993, there was "All That She Wants" with exactly half of its chart run landing in the next calendar year, but giving it all its points would have ended up putting it at #1. But it seemed pretty clear that AT40 didn't go with the full estimate for that, which was plenty enough justification for me not to either. Then for 1994, there's the two mid-charting hits that each ended up lasting a few months into 1995, which would almost certainly end up way, way outperforming any kind of estimation you could give them. That's a dynamic that factored into why I posted two versions for that year. I have done a calendar year ranking using AT40's 1982 methodology, which I think yielded better results, but these rankings will provide an alternate look at each year's biggest hits. Had you posted this set of rankings already and I missed it, or not yet?

While no methodology is perfect, these are pretty darn good. Vince does phenomenal work with all of these. 🙂 I have done a calendar year ranking using AT40's 1982 methodology, which I think yielded better results, but these rankings will provide an alternate look at each year's biggest hits. Had you posted this set of rankings already and I missed it, or not yet? I read that as the process he is implementing in these latest rankings, so you haven't missed anything.

Otherwise great work, DJ Joe The countdowns I am posting now are after the fact countdowns, such as Fred Bronson's. Songs are placed in the year they first peaked, and their whole chart run is counted even it runs into the following year. That is why a big #1 can have its first week at #1 the last week of the year and end up the #1 song of that year. "I'm A Believer" is the one of the most extreme examples. A possible way to prevent this phenomenon is to place the song in the year most of its peak week occurred, rather than the year its first peak week occurred. Something I will think about for future lists.
