Here is 1985. Hall and Oates take the top spot. And there is a "Look Away" incident with one. The number one song of was not number one during the calendar year. This almost happened in 1971, 1978 and 1984 as the #2 song of those years left #1 before the year began. This is going by this methodology and December through November eligibility period. The eligibility period for 1985 is 12/1/84 through 11/30/85.

As the year comes to an end, I am adding an update to this thread. Over the next couple of weeks, I am going to post year end charts using an exponential ranking methodology for the calendar year, for 1956 through 1989. Records, or sides prior to 1969, will be ranked in the year they first peaked and they will receive credit for their full chart run even if it began in the prior year or runs into the next year. An explanation of the methodology is described at the beginning of the thread.
I have done a calendar year ranking using AT40's 1982 methodology, which I think yielded better results, but these rankings will provide an alternate look at each year's biggest hits.
Prior to the Hot 100 in 1958, I used the Top 100 for the rankings. BB never did YE rankings for the pre-Hot 100 top 100.
Starting with 1956, the first full year of the BB Top 100 chart. Sides peaking in the issue dates of 12/7/56 through 12/29/56 are eligible.

We really can see how Top 40 programming changed in the late 70s, with so many more songs accumulating over 1000 points. Programmers found that listeners didn't tire of songs nearly as quickly as they had before.
Then in 1985, suddenly it was back to only two songs with over 1000 points. I wonder what were the biggest reasons for that reversal?
Or maybe I'm giving too much importance to that arbitrary cutoff of 1000. The point totals for the #100 songs have been pretty consistent through the years.
Maybe it was more about more stations following the Drake/Sklar approach of playing the biggest hits to death over and over.
And so much for any thought that 1950s Top 40 was a Golden Age of big playlists. Look at all those songs with over 1000 points!

Here is 1958. The entire top 10 all hit #1. One thing of interest is "The Chipmunk Song" ranking at #55 despite spending 4 weeks at #1. The eligibility period is the issue dates of 1/6/58 through 12/29/58.

Vince,
Another great job in compiling these end of year lists.
The 1950's were certainly a mixed bag of styles, with music geared to adults and the emerging teen market. It wasn't until the mid 1960's that Top 40/CHR would primarily go after the under 25 market, as the charts would reflect.

Joel Whitburn's books also agree there were no poodles.
