While I really like or love 28 songs from the 11/5/83 countdown, these 6 are my absolute faves:One Thing Needs To Another, True, King Of Pain, Modern Love, Can't Shake Loose*, Just Got LuckyWhile I really like or love 25 songs from the 11/4/78 countdown, these 6 are my absolute faces:Double Vision, Hot Child In The City, Boogie Oogie Oogie, Blue Collar Man, She's Always A Woman, The Power Of Gold* Dan Fogelberg & Tim Weisberg along with Agnetha Falkskog are This Week's Shooda Dun Betr Picks. "The Power Of Gold" has great harmonies and a great guitar solo. "Can't Shake Loose" creates a cool mood and has both great bass and guitar lines. While comments are turned off for both versions of "The Power Of Gold" from Dan's official YouTube link, Agnetha's offifical account allows comments... and they're mixed. Someone posted, "This song is so bad, can't stop laughing" with someone else calling her "a bad Blondie copy" . But we do have freedom of speech in this country, so I'm saying this is a cool tune (as is Dan Fogelberg's tune):

11/5/83:
Irene Cara - Why Me Jackson Browne - Tender Is The Night JoBoxers - Just Got Lucky Spandau Ballet - True The Human League - Mirror Man
The Beatles & The Rolling Stones
More than 50 years after the Beatles split up, what was probably their last single has now been released: "Now And Then"
John Lennon originally wrote the song in the late 1970s and then recorded it unfinished as a demo in his apartment in the Dakota Building in New York City. Lennon´s widow Yoko Ono gave the demo recordings to McCartney in 1994. The Beatles had already wanted to release the song 26 years ago on the compilation "Anthology 3". Thanks to artificial intelligence and a lot of technology, "Now And Then" has now been completed.
"It´s pretty emotional and we´re all playing along," Paul McCartney announced last week. The 81-year-old singer and bassist completed the song last year with Beatles drummer Ringo Starr (83). Their bandmate George Harrison, who died in 2001, had already recorded electric and acoustic guitar for it in the mid-1990s. "It´s a real Beatles recording," says McCartney. It is the "final" song of the "Fab Four".
And here is a "She Loves You" edition:
11/5/83:
Air Supply - Making Love (Out Of Nothing At All) Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse Of The Heart Peabo Bryson & Roberta Flack - Tonight, I Celebrate My Love For You Sheena Easton - Telefone (Long Distance Love Affair) The Motels - Suddenly Last Summer
The Rolling Stones´ 31st studio album is called "Hackney Diamonds".
The band had repeatedly made vague hints about a new album. In August 2023, for example, an advertisement for the fictitious glass repair company "Hackney Diamonds" appeared in the local London newspaper "Hackney Gazette", which observers interpreted as a kind of pre-announcement. "Hackney Diamonds" is a local slang term for broken glass on the floor after a robbery, wrote the BBC in this context.
In addition, guitarist Keith Richards told Deutsche Presse-Agentur in spring 2022 about drummer Steve Jordan, who had taken over for the late Charlie Watts: "Working with Steve Jordan has somehow brought a new energy and joie de vivre." They now want to see "what else we can get going with the new line-up. There´s a lot in the works." It was also recently reported that ex-bassist Bill Wyman and ex-Beatle Paul McCartney had been in the studio with the Stones. The song "Bite My Head Off" sounds as if the old heroes have boyishly spurred each other on to new life.
On the album "Blue & Lonesome", the Stones took on a few of the old blues songs on which they once built their career. At the end of the new album, they put their own song in this tradition. "Rolling Stone Blues" is a mangy confession of being vagabonds. They follow the immortality of the blues in sparseness with a line that Mick Jagger previously sang in the kitschy, wistful song "Depending on You" without any larmoyance: "Too young for dying, to old to lose"
And here´s an "I Can´t Get No Satisfaction" edition:
11/5/83:
Bryan Adams - This Time David Bowie - Modern Love Def Leppard - Foolin´ Quiet Riot - Cum On Feel The Noize Talking Heads - Burning Down The House
Time for an extra: Culture Club
To coincide with the time change in the USA - the clocks in Europe have been back on "standard time" for a week now - a Culture Club song from late 1982 and early 1983. On the back of the best-of album "The First Four Years", brief information on a total of 12 Culture Club songs is printed.
The following information is given about the song "Time": Never before included on a Culture Club album, this song reacheo the British Top 3 at Christmas 1982 - lt was released as a follow-up to the group´s first worldwide "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" from "Kissing To Be Clever": Culture Club´s first album which became a worldwide, hit and went triple platinum in Canada.

^ Happy Birthday, trekkielo While I really like or love 28 songs from the 11/12/77 countdown, these 10 tunes are my absolute faves:It's Ecstasy When You Lay Next To Me, You Make Lovin' Fun, Cold As Ice, Send In The Clowns*, Isn't It Time, Keep It Comin' Love, Slip Slidin' Away, Your Smiling Face, (Every Time I Turn Around) Back In Love Again, Here You Come AgainWhile I really like or love 19 songs from the 11/14/81 countdown, these 8 tunes are my absolute faves:Private Eyes, The Night Owls, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Young Turks, Let's Groove, Trouble, Sausolito Summernight*, No Reply At AllAs I write this, I have a fever (and the only prescription... is more cowbell! ), When I have a fever, songs sound a half-step higher than usual, yet tempos sound a little slower than normal. It's really strange. So in selecting "Send In The Clowns" and "Sausolito Summernight", they sound higher pitched than they should. Anyway, I'm taking a page out of the seminolefan playbook and am featuring SITC as performed with Arthur Fielder & The Boston Pops Orchestra (didn't he have a show on PBS?). She deserved every bit of the 90+ second ovation! Someone on YouTube described her voice as "hauntingly beautiful"... and that person is right! Meanwhile, once I feel like eating again, I'll have a burger and a root beer when I listen to SS:

11/14/81:Al Jarreau - We´re In This Love Together Chris Christian - I Want You, I Need You Lindsey Buckingham - Trouble Mike Post - Theme From Hillstreet Blues Sheena Easton - For Your Eyes OnlyA weekend to celebrateThe fifth season, also known as carnival, begins on 11/11 But why ? In the Middle Ages, the number 11 stood for joking and fooling around. It is a booze number, a fool´s number, as they would have said back then. In the Christian faith, the number 11 is also associated with sin and profanity: It stands between the numbers 10 and 12, which have great biblical significance. 11 - one more than the 10 fingers and one less than the 12 apostles. Nothing half and nothing whole. The number 11 became firmly established at the beginning of the 19th century when the so-called "11er-Rat" (council of 11) was formed, which still forms the organizing committees in the various carnival clubs today. In addition, sessions do not start on the hour, but eleven minutes later.
The origins of carnival are not entirely clear. Even in ancient Rome, there were festivities at which the upper and lower classes temporarily swapped roles. There were even colorful parades. These included, for example, the so-called Saturnalia or Lupercalia in honor of the gods Saturn and Faunus. However, researchers doubt that this is where the roots of today´s carnival lie, as well as the widespread belief that the origins lie in Germanic or Celtic spring festivals. In pre-Christian times, people dressed up as ghosts and demons and organized a huge spectacle at the end of winter. This drove away the evil spirits and was intended to awaken the spirits of spring with the help of bells and drums. A Christian origin is much more likely: carnival, also known as Shrove Tuesday, therefore ushered in the long period of Lent, which lasted from Ash Wednesday to Easter. This is why extensive celebrations take place beforehand, accompanied by plenty of food and drink: The food is accordingly very sumptuous and, above all, greasy. So you can really let off steam again at the carnival celebrations. In this respect, the very fatty, typical dishes such as doughnuts and other lard pastries are also to be classified. The possible derivation of "carnival" from the Latin "carne vale" also fits into this interpretation: "meat, farewell". For non-carnival connoisseurs, it´s usually surprising that on 11/11 there is a day of foolish activity and the fools then behave as if nothing had happened. It´s not until the new year that the carnival season really begins - carnivalists call it a session, not a season. trekkielo is probably also celebrating this weekend, so there will be an " x-large-celebration" edition: 11/14/81:Chilliwack - My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone) Daryl Hall & John Oates - Private Eyes Diana Ross - Why Do Fools Fall In Love Diesel - Sausalito Summernight Earth, Wind and Fire - Let´s Groove Olivia Newton-John - Physical Rick Springfield - I´ve Done Everything For You Rod Stewart - Young Turks The Go-Go´s - Our Lips Are Sealed The Rolling Stones - Start Me Up Time for an extra: Altered ImagesTogether with Clare Grogan (vocals) and Gerard "Caesar" McNulty (guitar), school friends John McElhone (guitar), Tony McDaid (electric bass) and Michael "Tich" Anderson (drums) formed the band " Altered Images" in March 1979, taking their name from the album cover of the Buzzcocks´ 1978 single "Promises". Happy Birthday was the title track of the first album, which was recorded under the direction of Steve Severin. Altered Images officially disbanded in 1984. Grogan continued to pursue her acting career and released solo records, guitarist Johnny McElhone first founded the band Hipsway, which had a chart success with "The Honeythief", before founding the band Texas together with Sharleen Spiteri in 1986. In August 2022, the reunited band released the album "Mascara Streakz". from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

The soul power this week in 1973 was unbelievable. Not just this week. A couple months earlier fully half the songs in the countdown were soul. And in a little known factoid, that week in 1972 when the top 8 hits were soul is not the only time 8 songs in a row were soul hits. On 12/15/73, 8 in a row were soul, #17-10.

While I really like or love 29 songs from the 11/16/85 countdown, these 9 are my absolute faves: Miami Vice Theme, So In Love, I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down, Fortress Around Your Heart*, Oh Sheila, Running Up That Hill, Small Town, Object Of My Desire, Lonely Ol' Night
While I really like or love 24 songs from the 11/17/73 countdown, these 10 are my absolute faves: Just You'N'Me, I Got A Name, Half-Breed, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, The Most Beautiful Girl, That Lady, Hello It's Me, Higher Ground, Loves Me Like A Rock*, Never Never Gonna Give You Up
No rhyme or reason why I selected Sting and Paul Simon for This Week's Pick Hits. "Fortress Around Your Heart" has a cool mood in its verses and then goes into a nice pop/rock chorus. "Loves Me Like A Rock" is just a fun tune to sing along to, especially the background singers.

11/16/85:David Foster - Love Theme From St. Elmo´s FireKate Bush - Running Up That Hill Olivia Newton-John - Soul KissOrchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - So In Love Scritti Politti - Perfect Way Officially openedThe Danube Tower slide is not for people with a fear of heights. You can slide 150 meters above the ground. Last Wednesday was the official opening of the new sensation in the city on the Danube. After the spectacular installation by helicopter on 10/3, the slide can now be tried out by everyone - approximately one month later. At a height of 150 meters, art and adventure are combined. The result: a 40 meter long, illuminated slide. The already impressive view of the Vienna skyline from the Danube Tower can now also be enjoyed on a slide. It is the highest slide in Europe and runs from the central floor at a height of 165 meters along the northern outer side of the Danube Tower to the viewing level at a height of 150 meters. Adventure-seekers can slide down the 40-meter-long slide with curves and straights and a gradient of 29 degrees. With a slide time of seven to nine seconds, depending on weight, a speed of up to 18 km/h can be reached. "Following the conversion and renovation work carried out in 2018, we have focused on the further development of the Danube Tower in recent years. In close cooperation with the renowned object artist Carsten Höller, we have succeeded in creating a modern and contemporary attraction," says Paul Blaguss, co-partner of the Danube Tower. The aim was to meet customers´ desire for excitement and adrenaline and to offer a special experience for a wider target group. The Danube Tower slide can be used between 11 am and 9 pm with a valid admission ticket and is secured by a traffic light control system and video surveillance. "The Danube Tower is a building for leisure, fun and relaxation - we are delighted to be able to offer our guests a unique experience in Vienna with the new ´ Danube Tower Slide´," conclude the partners and Managing Director of the Danube Tower Hermann Krammer. So, here´s my " kick"-edition for this week: 11/16/85:A-Ha - Take On Me Eddie Murphy - Party All The Time Jan Hammer - Miami Vice Theme Loverboy - Lovin´ Every Minute Of It
Starship - We Built This City Time for an extra: Talking HeadsThe three Art students David Byrne, Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz met at the Rhode Island School of Design in the mid-1970s. Byrne and Frantz discovered a shared interest in music and formed the unsuccessful band "The Artistics". However, Byrne dropped out of university in 1974 and moved to New York. Frantz and Weymouth followed him shortly afterwards. Inspired by the music scene around the CBGB music club in Manhattan´s Lower East Side, they founded the " Talking Heads". The name of the band corresponds to the TV political format " Talking Heads", which shows TV pictures of journalists whose lower bodies are unrecognizable: you only see talking heads. Their first gig was as the support act for "The Ramones". The three performed with other bands from the punk and new wave movement such as "Blondie". Even during this time, they were strikingly different from the appearance of other punk and new wave bands. For example, they initially dispensed with styling and dressed unpretentiously in the style of average college students. Nor did they display the attitude of aggressive, youthful rebels. As a trio, they recorded several demo tracks at CBS Studios in 1975, including many of the songs that would later appear on their debut album. In 1977, they finally expanded their line-up to include Jerry Harrison, then an architecture student who had already played with Jonathan Richman´s band "The Modern Lovers". Until 1984, " Talking Heads" were a band that was highly praised by critics but only appreciated by a relatively small section of the public. However, the band did not have any major hits or sales figures. It was not until the 1984 concert film "Stop Making Sense", directed by Jonathan Demme, and the soundtrack of the same name that the " Talking Heads" suddenly became popular. The film is a lively and stirring documentation of a series of performances by the band. There are no backstage scenes, accompanying interviews or other accessories, so that the viewer gets the feeling of experiencing a carefully choreographed performance first hand. David Byrne´s charismatic and irritating stage presence plays a large part in this: the singer was regarded by many fans in the 80s as the embodiment of the intellectual metropolitan neurotic par excellence. The record released at the same time was also a commercial success. Some of the recordings on it, such as "Psycho Killer", "Once In A Lifetime" and "Life During Wartime", which David Byrne performed solo, accompanied only by an acoustic guitar and a cheap rhythm box, became popular hits on dance floors and at student parties - a rather unusual phenomenon for live recordings, as these "Talking Heads ballads give us back what the ballad always was in its original sense: ball, dance, party". The " Talking Heads" had their biggest chart success in Europe with the single "Road To Nowhere": from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."
