While I really like or love 30 songs from the 11/28/87 countdown, these 11 are my absolute faves:We'll Be Together, Shake Your Love, Breakout, Don't You Want Me, Catch Me (I'm Falling), Hourglass*, Got My Mind Set On You, Dude (Looks Like A Lady), Little Lies, Cherry Bomb, Love Will Find A WayWhile I really like or love 22 songs from the 11/27/71 countdown, these 15 are my absolute faves:Theme from Shaft, Gypsies Tramps & Thieves, Baby I'm A Want You, Family Affair, Rock Steady, An Old Fashioned Love Song, Respect Yourself, Superstar (Carpenters), Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler), Questions 67 & 68*, Brand New Key, You Are Everything, One Fine Morning, I Know I'm Losing You, I'd Love To Change The World* Hey, we have horns a plenty on This Week's Shooda Dun Beter Picks. I'm still shocked that "Hourglass" was Squeeze's first Top 40 hit given such great tunes as "Tempted", "Black Coffee In Bed" and my fave from them, "Pulling Mussels From The Shell". Meanwhile, Chicago could do no wrong throughout the 70s but "Questions 67 & 68" didn't chart until its second release, somehow only getting to #24. I know I have said this before but if today's musicians would hire real trumpet, saxophone and trombone players, you would get more people liking your songs like these two gems!

"Questions 67 and 68" did chart on first release, but didn't get anywhere near the top 40. Debuted on 8/9/69, 3 weeks on the Hot 100, going from 99 to 78 to 71 (w/e 8/23/69) to off. Chicago Transit Authority was the band's name at that time, just like the title of their first LP that the track was taken from. Their next chart appearance, with name shortened to just Chicago, was the fist week of April 1970, when "Make Me Smile" debuted and got the hit streak going.

11/28/87: Cutting Crew - I´ve Been In Love BeforeDef Leppard - Animal Poison - I Won´t Forget You Steve Winwood - Valerie Yes - Love Will Find A Way Miss World 1987On 11/12/1987, Ulrike (Ulla) Weigerstorfer becomes the second Austrian woman after Eva Rueber-Staier (1969) to win the Miss World contest in London.
The origin of her success was a coincidence. "That´s why I didn´t overestimate it from the start. I stood in for a sick girl, was allowed to travel to London and became Miss World." An event that influenced her life, Weigerstorfer is convinced. "The pageant opened a few doors for me. The downside is that you have to prove yourself a lot more afterwards." Her success on 11/12/1987 at the Royal Albert Hall in London was followed by numerous television, radio and theater appearances as a presenter and actress and a series of pictures in the US men´s magazine Playboy (April 1988). Ulla Weigerstorfer also trained as an announcer and was, among other things, the presenter of a sports program on the radio for seven years. From 1988 to 1995, Weigerstorfer was in a relationship with the Austrian tennis player Horst Skoff. Ulla Weigerstorfer believes that pageants still have their justification. "It´s in human nature to compete. You can also see that people are preoccupied with the topic of beauty. Everyone tries to conform to a certain ideal of beauty." And here is my female " power"-edition: 11/28/87:Belinda Carlisle - Heaven Is A Place On Earth Debbie Gibson - Shake Your Love Jody Watley - Don´t You Want Me Tiffany - I Think We´re Alone Now Whitney Houston - So Emotional Time for an extra: WaxWax were a new wave duo based in Manchester, England, consisting of American singer-songwriter Andrew Gold and 10cc guitarist/bassist Graham Gouldman. They formed in Manchester during 1983, but started out as "World in Action" for their first single "Don´t Break My Heart" which failed to chart during 1984. In 1985, after changing their name to "Common Knowledge", they released a second single "Victoria", which was also a commercial flop.
After failing to find chart success with their debut singles, the pair signed up with RCA and changed their name to " Wax". They released two new singles ("Ball and Chain" and "Shadows of Love" from their debut album Magnetic Heaven) which also failed to chart. A third single "Right Between The Eyes" gave Wax their first taste of chart success, reaching #60 in the UK and #43 in the USA. The video featured heavy use of stop-motion animation, which was kind of on-trend during the mid to late 80s. The technique was used in Talking Heads´s "Road To Nowhere" and Peter Gabriel´s "Sledgehammer". It´s no surprise that the video was produced by Graham Gouldman´s bandmates in 10CC, Godley and Creme. It was directed by Storm Thorgerson.
"Bridge To Your Heart" became the group´s most popular single in their home country of the UK, reaching #12 on the UK Singles Chart and reaching the top ten in other European countries such as the Netherlands and Sweden. from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

12/1/84:
Daryl Hall & John Oates - Out Of Touch Jack Wagner - All I NeedRay Parker Junior - Jamie REO Speedwagon - I Do Wanna Know U2 - Pride (In The Name Of Love) Christmas time (part 1)Winter arrived in Austria on Saturday night. Especially on the northern and eastern side of the Alps, from Vorarlberg to Lower Austria and Vienna, heavy snowfall caused deep winter road conditions. Krimml saw particularly heavy precipitation. According to Geosphere Austria, 58 centimetres of snow had fallen there by Saturday evening. In Abtenau, 49 centimetres were measured, in Lofer 30. 23 centimetres were measured by GeoSphere Austria at the airport in the city of Salzburg. In Bischofshofen there is currently 14 centimeters of snow, in St. Michael im Lungau 23. The reason for the onset of winter is an Italian low pressure area, explains Claudia Riedl from GeoSphere Austria. "The low is bringing very humid and warm Mediterranean air to Austria. At the same time, cold air is seeping in from the north. This is accompanied by an uplift." This means that cold air is lifting the warm air. And there is almost always precipitation. In this case - due to the low temperatures - snowfall.
And here´s my "at Christmas possible"-edition:
12/1/84:Bob Seger - Understanding Chicago - You´re The Inspiration Jermaine Jackson - Do What You Do Stevie Wonder - I Just Called To Say I Love You The Honeydrippers - Sea Of LoveTime for a Christmas extra: EurythmicsHonesdale, Pennsylvania. A small, inconspicuous place. The area around Honesdale is popular with fishermen, hikers and skiers. However, the place is famous for these lines, which probably all of us know: "Sleigh bells ring, are you listening, In the lane, snow is glistening, A beautiful sight, we´re happy tonight, Walking in a winter wonderland." Dick Smith wrote the lyrics in the 1930s. His house stood - and still stands - on Church Street in Honesdale, directly opposite the only small park in the village. He wrote the text when he was being treated for tuberculosis in a sanatorium. He recalled a winter´s day when he was at home, looking out over the snow-covered park from his study on the first floor. He observed a couple of children playing carefree in the snow and building a snowman. With these impressions in mind, he wrote a poem that he called "Winter Wonderland". When Dick Smith showed his work to his musician friend Felix Bernard some time later, he was very enthusiastic. He was of the opinion that it absolutely had to be turned into a song. And then something happened that was probably only withheld from a few songs: "Winter Wonderland" became a real classic in music history worldwide. Because as early as 1934 - the year of its release - three different versions of the song appeared. Dean Martin, Paul Anka, Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin then recorded their own interpretations. Times and musical tastes changed, but the fascination for the song did not. In the 70s, Elvis Presley and country musician Willie Nelson, among others, published their own versions. Curiously enough, one of the most famous Christmas songs of all time has nothing to do with Christmas. Not a single word or allusion is made to Christmas - the song is really just about a beautiful winter´s day. Probably the most famous version of the 80s comes from the Eurythmics. The voice of Annie Lennox and the electronic sounds of Dave Stewart meet a Christmas classic. The result is one of the most typical Christmas pop songs of the 80s. A New Wave Advent song, so to speak - even though it was never released as a single. Her interpretation of "Winter Wonderland" was part of the sampler "A Very Special Christmas", which was released in aid of the Special Olympics in 1987. Dick Smith was unaware of the incredible success of his song. He died of tuberculosis on his birthday in September 1935. But his home town of Honesdale has not forgotten him. Every year, a Santa Claus parade takes place there, which ends in the park in front of Dick Smith´s house - and at the end, everyone involved sings "Winter Wonderland" ... from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

Street Band - War Chico DeBarge - Talk To Me Miami Sound Machine featuring Gloria Estefan - Falling In Love (Uh-Oh) Wang Chung - Everybody Have Fun Tonight Christmas time (part 2)At the 48th edition of the Gnigl Krampus Run, spectators could look forward to a total of 40 Krampus groups. The family-friendly run was led by the children from Alterbach and Campus Gnigl kindergarten, who presented their homemade masks. Every year, up to 10,000 spectators attend the traditional run. "This year, someone even flew in from New Zealand just to see the run," says master upholsterer Hannes Brugger, chairman of the "Alt Gnigler Krampus Perchten Pass", which has been organizing the run since 1972. The cross-generational association never planned for the event to become so big. It has simply developed over the years. That is why safety is the top priority. At the Krampus Run, it doesn´t matter where you come from or what your political views are. "Everyone is welcome here," explains the chairman. A group of artists from Los Angeles (USA) got in touch with Hannes Brugger some time ago and the chairman of the Gnigler Krampuses arranged for St. Nicholas´ dark companion to come to America. There he performs on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.
And here are my "Krampus"-editions:
12/11/82:Adam Ant - Goody Two Shoes Diana Ross - Muscles Phil Collins - You Can´t Hurry Love The Clash - Rock The Casbah The Stray Cats - Rock This Town 1/10/87 (guest-host: Charlie Van Dyke):Billy Idol - To Be A Lover Bon Jovi - Livin´ On A Prayer Kool & The Gang - Victory Madonna - Open Your Heart Pretenders - Don´t Get Me Wrong Time for a Christmas extra: Wham !Some love it - some hate it. Hardly anyone is indifferent ... and ... it reappears very reliably every year at Christmas. "Last Christmas" is available as a polka, as a hip hop song, in a country and western version, in a pop version or in 1920s style. Let´s transport ourselves back to the winter of 1984: Wham ! were big in the charts. With "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" and "Freedom", they already had two #1 hits in England. Now they wanted to knock Frankie Goes To Hollywood off the throne with "The Power Of Love".
The idea from Wham !´s record company at the time: "A Christmas hit" ... and ... George Michael happened to have one in the drawer. He had already composed the song in 1983 at the age of 19 in his childhood bedroom, while Wham ! colleague Andrew Ridgeley was sitting on the sofa with George Michael´s parents watching soccer. It is said that in November 1984, George simply rewrote the lyrics of the already finished song called "Last Easter", adapting it to Christmas and the season. George Michael believed in the song. It was simple, but catchy. The story: An unhappy love story - what else ? The short version: Last year I gave my heart to you at Christmas, you let me down, this year I love someone else. The video for "Last Christmas" is also legendary to this day: The clip was filmed in a chalet in the Swiss winter sports resort of Saas Fee in the Valais Alps and cost 60,000 British pounds - a huge sum for a music video at the time. The gondola in which George Michael, Andrew Ridgeley and a few girls were chauffeured up the mountain was in normal ski operation until 2007, when it was replaced. Today, the original gondola stands next to the station as a popular photo motif - no wonder: "Last Christmas" is George Michael´s most-clicked video on YouTube. The hit was pre-programmed, the video rotated on MTV, the #1 was just a formality - if it hadn´t been for Band Aid and "Do They Know It's Christmas". No other song stood a realistic chance against the charity single during the 1984 Christmas season. George Michael took it sportingly, was part of Band Aid and donated all proceeds from "Last Christmas" to the Band Aid Trust. He found it less amusing that he was sued by Barry Manilow shortly after the release. His hit "Can't Smile Without You" actually bears a certain resemblance to "Last Christmas". In the end, Barry and George settled the whole thing out of court. George Michael was always proud of his hit, even though he knows that "Last Christmas" is not his very best song. But ... Christmas without "Last Christmas" is somehow not a real Christmas ... is it ? from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."
