Formula 1 in Austria
In 1970, the cars of the premier class raced in Spielberg for the first time - in 2023, it´s that time again. Formula 1 returns to what is now the "Red Bull Ring". 1970: Sir Jackie Stewart, Graham Hill and Jochen Rindt grace the Formula 1 field - and the top class makes its first stop in Austria since 1964. To be precise, the top class holds its first Formula 1 race on what was then the "Österreichring". A 5.942-kilometer high-speed track, it featured many fast, but also dangerous curves. The fascination in combination with local hero Jochen Rindt was unbroken. Around 100,000 spectators made their way to the daring track for the Ring´s debut race - which was to remain a permanent fixture on the Formula 1 racing calendar until 1987. In the following years, the top class did not return to the "Österreichring". In 1996, major reconstruction work was carried out on the track, which was now renamed the "A1-Ring". The once almost six-kilometer-long circuit shrank to 4.3 kilometers, and run-off zones were integrated. The Ring, whether with "Austria", "A1" or "Red Bull" as its nickname, remains an integral part of the calendar to this day, even some 54 years after its first Formula 1 race. In 2023, Formula 1 will once again make a guest appearance in Spielberg. Now the names are Hamilton, Verstappen, Alonso and Leclerc. Legends like Sir Jackie Stewart only watch now, but the fascination remains the same.
And here´s my "power"-edition:

Time for a French extra: Antoine
Time for music from France in the summer months - to start there is a "Hello" from Antoine.
Pierre Antoine Muraccioli, known professionally as Antoine, is a French pop singer, and also a sailor, adventurer, writer, photographer, and filmmaker. As a musician, he was part of a new wave of mid-to-late 1960s French singer-songwriters, comparable in some ways to Bob Dylan or Donovan, but also evidencing some of the harder-edged garage rock style similar to The Rolling Stones, The Animals, and Them, and achieving some measure of pop stardom. A 1964 stay in the United States exposed Antoine to the burgeoning folk music revival on the American east coast. He enrolled as an engineering student in the Ecole Centrale Paris (from which he graduated in 1966), but also began traveling, playing his guitar, and singing in bistros for pocket money. He also began writing songs.
Here´s Antoine with "Bonjour, Salut" from 1968:

While I really like or love 32 songs from the 7/13/85 countdown, these 14 are my absoulte faves:A View To A Kill, Would I Lie To You, Voices Carry, Shout, Get It On (Bang A Gong), People Are People, Things Can Only Get Better, Everybody Wants To Rule The World, Cannonball, Freeway Of Love, What About Love, Find A Way, In My House, Summer of '69While I really like or love 23 songs from the 7/12/75 countdown, these 10* are my absolute faves:The Hustle, Listen To What The Man Said, Wildfire, One Of These Nights, I'm Not In Love, Jive Talkin', Someone Saved My Life Tonight, Sister Golden Hair, Fight The Power, Sweet Emotion * NOTE: This list would have had 11 absolute faves but "Spirit Of The Boogie" by Kool & The Gang was played at #35 and not the flip side, "Summer Madness" which is an incredible instrumental. And now it's time for an 80sat40 Flashback... to July of 1985. My local AT40 affiliate at the time, KHTR in St. Louis, played AT40 on Sundays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. I attended noon Mass on Sundays so that meant recording "America's Top 10" on the family VCR. Our local NBC affiliate played "America's Top 10" at 1 a.m. early Saturday mornings (insert Casey saying, "1 a.m.?!?!" ). Anyway, on this particular weekend, I forgot to record "America's Top 10". The rest of the family went to an earlier Mass that Sunday so I asked my youngest brother to listen to the final hour of AT40 and write down the Top 10. I get home from church, and David gives me an index card listing the following: 10. The Goonies R Good Enough 9. Glory Days 8. He Said Shuddup 7. You Give Good Love... I asked, "He Said Shuddup at #8? What's that song?" David said, "You know, my least favorite song." I said, "Oh, Voices Carry". We laughed as David hated that song! I would make him listen to it when we drove somewhere together. I miss those days as he passed away two years later due to an undetected heart condition. I still have that index card! So to honor little bro, I'm featuring "Voices Carry" along with "Wildfire" by Michael (Martin) Murphey as he would even sing along to that song (well, the refrain ) when he was just four years old:

7/13/85:Amy Grant - Find A Way Aretha Franklin - Freeway Of Love Kim Carnes - Crazy In The Night (Barking At Airplanes) The Beach Boys - Getcha Back Whitney Houston - You Give Good LoveLive AidWhen you think of charity concerts, Live Aid also pops into your head to this day. On 7/13/1985, the biggest rock stars of the day gather at either Wembley Stadium in London or John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia to raise awareness for a major fundraiser for African famine relief. The lineup includes Bryan Adams, Judas Priest, Simple Minds, Status Quo, Tina Turner, The Who, U2, Neil Young, Queen, Santana, Paul McCartney, Madonna, Duran Duran, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Elton John, Dire Straits, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Bryan Ferry and the Beach Boys. Only one artist may not choose one of the two concerts and unceremoniously plays at both: Phil Collins. Actually, the Briton didn´t need the attention that came with it at the time. After all, his most successful album to date, "No Jacket Required", was released in February 1985 and is still the talk of the town. Nevertheless, he decides to do a very special marketing stunt as part of Live Aid: directly after his performance in London, Phil Collins has himself picked up by a helicopter, flies to Heathrow Airport, boards the Concorde supersonic aircraft there, shoots off to New York City within a few hours, boards a helicopter again there and drops off at John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia. The show in London goes according to plan. Phil Collins plays solo hits like "Against All Odds" as well as "In The Air Tonight" and brings Police frontman Sting on stage for "Long Long Way To Go". As part of the Sting performance, Phil again joins for "Every Breath You Take". Everything works out afterwards as well, with the persistent artist making it to the London airport on time. When he enters the Concorde, which is waiting for him on site, his heart slips into his pants. Waiting for him on board is Kal Rudman, an important man in the US radio industry. At the time, he was acting as a consultant, virtually deciding whether or not artists would receive airplay in the States. "Phil later told me that he died and went up to heaven when he saw me on the plane," Rudman later recalled in an interview with the Philadelphia Daily News. A few hours later, Phil has long since regained his composure. Good thing, because now he has to take the stage at John F. Kennedy Stadium. Once again he plays hits like "Against All Odds" and "In The Air Tonight". When guitar legend Eric Clapton performs his three-song set, Phil takes over the drumsticks.
So, here´s my "live"-edition:
7/13/85:Bryan Adams - Summer of ´69 ( live) Bruce Springsteen - Glory Days ( live) John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band - Tough All Over ( live) Phil Collins - Sussudio ( live) Prince & The Revolution - Raspberry Beret ( live) Time for a French extra: Vanessa ParadisVanessa Paradis is a successful French singer and actress from Paris, who has also enjoyed great success as a model for Chanel. When Vanessa landed her first #1 with the smooth jazz number "Joe Le Taxi" in 1987, she was just 14 years old. The singer, who is often attributed the attribute of "childlike" due to her characteristically high-pitched voice, has since become an international superstar whose face has appeared on the covers of several hundred magazines and who has won prestigious awards for both her music and her acting work. Vanessa Chantal Paradis was born the daughter of two interior designers near Paris, where she participated in singing and modeling competitions as a child. In 1983 she recorded her first single. Four years later, "Joe Le Taxi" was released, reaching #1 of the French charts and #3 in the British charts, making the musician internationally famous. At the age of 16, Vanessa dropped out of school to focus on her career as a musician. Subsequently, critically and commercially successful albums appeared, such as the 60s pop-influenced " Vanessa Paradis" (1992), whose songs were penned by her then partner Lenny Kravitz. As an actress, Vanessa was soon seen alongside such greats as Jean Reno, Alan Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo. Vanessa Paradis remains in the gossip press despite the absence of commercially successful records. The reason for this was her relationships with Lenny Kravitz and Johnny Depp. from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits.

Suzanne Vega and Wilson Pickett shine as This Week's Pick Hits. Suzanne Vega's voice just fits perfectly with the tone of her song. Meanwhile, Wilson Pickett sounds like he's having the time of his life singing his tune. Enjoy! [...] Is it wrong that I hate “Luka”? Sorry, I don’t mind Suzanne Vega but that song is just too depressing. Suzanne´s unmistakable "clear, unwavering voice" (Rolling Stone) - also described by the Washington Post as "cool, as if brushed by sandpaper, almost whispering" - has always been at the center, conveying the stories she told in an ideal, sensitive and touching way. For one thing Suzanne Vega is above all - a terrific master storyteller who "observes the world with a clinically poetic eye" (The New York Times), telling of the simple things, of city life, ordinary people like you and me. Now, in the course of her new tour "An Intimate Evening Of Songs And Stories", the terrific singer-songwriter finally comes to Austria and gives a guest performance today (7/9/2023) at VAZ St. Pölten (Lower Austria). In an interview with Philipp Kause ( www.laut.de/Suzanne-Vega/Interviews/Ich-klang-wie-ein-Monster-10-09-2020-1788), Suzanne says: "Luka was not meant to address sexual violence. There are no references to sex in the song, but it is about domestic violence. Sexual violence is a special category, in my opinion. I did a song about that, too, ´Bad Wisdom´. Before I wrote ´Luka´, I was thinking about the issue of child abuse and how I could address the issue without it taking that typical ´your-child-beating-is-bad´ attitude. I saw this boy Luka in the house where I lived. That is, at first I didn´t see him, I only knew his name, and I tried to imagine what this boy looked like. Because from that name it was already impossible to say what nationality Luka was, whether it would be a boy or a girl - a universal name, and that´s exactly why I chose that name for the song. I had imagined a character for the song, and this Luka fit it because he was shy as well as 'tough' to the same degree, an unusual combination. So the name Luka became a vehicle for what I wanted to express in the song. He seemed to have a tricky side to him that had to do with being hardened, and acting very ´tough´ in a way, at least as a kid can do, but completely above average for a kid." And in an interview with editor Bernhard Flieher (Salzburger Nachrichten, current weekend edition, 7/8/2023), Suzanne Vega also reveals memories of Austria: "I remember the Life Ball, where I performed. And of a dream of my daughter. Once she was on tour with me and apparently fell in love with the city of Graz (Styria). She said this city felt like her real home. She remembered walking through Graz, between the old houses and up the hill with the turret. She probably knew such images from children´s books, and suddenly they were there." In the song "Last Train From Mariupol" Suzanne looks at the war in Ukraine. As for its origins, she says, "I was mesmerized by the images on TV. I watched and saw people fleeing. First there was personal shock, the thought of what war does. This touched me. But it doesn´t become a song yet. To the images came the sound of the word ´Mariupol´. It sounded mysterious, moreover, it was pronounced differently by different commentators in the USA. Finally, the train also has a melody. The New York Times quoted someone as saying, ´God would have fled because of what he saw´. When God takes the last train, humanity also disappears. So the real incident becomes something that transcends the moment." "Tom´s Diner" once served as a test song for the MP3 format, which then combined with streaming changed the music world. On this, Suzanne says, "It hasn´t changed how I write music, but how I find it. It happens through streaming channels and if something excites me I buy the CD, I like it when you can hold music in your hand too."

Apologies for the later than usual post as I was attending a conference this past week... While I really like or love 18 songs from the 7/18/81 countdown, these 7 are my absolute faves:Winning, Time, The Stroke, Don't Let Him Go, A Life Of Illusion*, I Love You, Super FreakSomebody at Premiere really likes 7/15/72 as this was the "A" show both two years ago and four years ago. Here's my edited review of the 7/15/72 countdown from two years ago... My Top 25 songs from the 7/15/72 countdown:Top 10: Lean On Me, Too Late To Turn Back Now, Outa-Space, Song Sung Blue, Brandy (You're A Fine Girl), Rocket Man, Alone Again (Naturally), Where Is The Love#11-20: School's Out, Take It Easy, Layla, The Candy Man, Troglodyte (Cave Man), Conquistador, I Need You#21-30: Nice To Be With You, Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress), People Make The World Go Round, I'm Still In Love With You #31-40: Last Night (I Didn't Get To Sleep At All), Hold Your Head Up, Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You), Oh Girl, I'll Take You There, Amazing Grace It's not often I get to feature two songs that didn't make it out of the 30's but Joe Walsh and Stevie Wonder are This Week's Shooda Dun Beter Picks. "A Life Of Illusion" is a little quirky but it's a fun kind of quirky with some great guitars. "Superwoman" is almost two songs in one. It's a long song by 1972 standards at 8 minutes long. It's kind of a ballad and kind of a mid-tempo tune and kind of a slow jam... but it's a cool jam :

She began her acting career at the age of 17 in the Graham Greene play "Carving a Statue" at the Haymarket Theatre in London. She got into film in 1965 when she landed a small role in Richard Lester´s comedy "The Knack and How to Get it," which won the Palme d´Or at Cannes that same year. Birkin made her first headlines as an actress in 1966 as a nude model in Michelangelo Antonioni´s cult flick "Blow Up," which also won an award at Cannes. With the song "Je t´aime ... moi non plus," in which she and Serge Gainsbourg sang a violent moan of love, she caused a scandal. Some radio stations put the track on the index for a while, including the British BBC. Her name is also a household name in the fashion world: for example, the fashion brand Hermès named its handbag, produced since the 1980s, after the actress - " Birkin Bag." In recent years, Jane Birkin has had recurring health problems. In her biography, published in 2018, she spoke openly of her fight against leukemia. In September 2021, she had to cancel her participation in the Deauville Film Festival due to a mild brain stroke. Jane Birkin was married to composer John Barry and later became involved with Gainsbourg and director Jacques Doillon. From these relationships she has three daughters, including actress Charlotte Gainsbourg. She died on 7/16//2023 at her home in Paris at the age of 76. from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits.

While I really like or love 27 songs from the 7/24/76 countdown, these 11 are my absolute faves:Afternoon Delight, I'll Be Good To You, Don't Go Breaking My Heart, You Should Be Dancing, Turn The Beat Around, Let 'Em In, More More More, You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine, Young Hearts Run Free, Silly Love Songs, Never Gonna Fall In Love AgainWhile I really like or love 26 songs from the 7/24/82 countdown, these 11 are my absolute faves:Hold Me, Abracadabra, Only The Lonely, Caught Up In You, Take It Away, Early In The Morning, Play The Game Tonight, Kids In America, Love Plus One, Your Imagination, Think I'm In Love This Week's Pick Hits are from Lou Rawls and Hall & Oates. Lou's voice is so smooth, deep and soulful while Daryl Hall and John Oates' voices are expressive, smooth and soulful. The production on YNFALLM is so grand while the synthesizer on YI is so quirky that it's like ear candy. St. Louis didn't have a true Top 40 station in the summer of '82 (KHTR would debut in the Fall of '82) so some pop songs like YI are late treats for me :
