A day for Austria with the greatest songs from Austria. It´s a musical journey through the whole country. The greatest songs from Bregenz to Podersdorf. The playlist for this music holiday is simply "Best of Austria". This day will also be very special because many Austrian musicians will be presenting their personal Austro favorites. There will be great classics as well as new songs from Austria. And after the Austrian music holiday from 9 am. to 7 pm., Ö3 will go live to Wiener Neustadt and broadcast the flood benefit concert from the Arena Nova. The Arena Nova in Wiener Neustadt is the ideal location for a concert of this magnitude. The acts perform free of charge and the production costs are covered by sponsors, which means that the net proceeds from ticket sales can be maximized. The money will go to the ORF initiative " Austria helps Austria", under whose umbrella important organizations such as Caritas, Diakonie, Hilfswerk, Rotes Kreuz and Volkshilfe are pooling their aid efforts, and will benefit people affected by the flood disaster in Austria. And here are my " greatest-hits" editions: 10/24/81 (A): Daryl Hall & John Oates - Private Eyes Diana Ross - Why Do Fools Fall In Love Juice Newton - Queen Of Hearts Olivia Newton-John - Physical The Rolling Stones - Start Me Up 10/29/83 (B):Billy Joel - Uptown Girl Bryan Adams - This Time David Bowie - Modern Love Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton - Islands In The Stream Lionel Richie - All Night Long (All Night) 9/6/80 (guest-host: Gordon Elliott):Dr. Hook - Sexy Eyes Electric Light Orchestra - I´m Alive Lipps Inc. - Funkytown Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall (Part II) Rocky Burnette - Tired Of Toein´ The Line Time for an extra: Huey Lewis & The NewsJust in time for the time change, which brings us back to standard time in Austria and Europe this weekend - "Back In Time" by Huey Lewis & The News: from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

Time for an extra: Max WernerHe was born Max Werlerofzoiets in Hilversum, a name that is of course impossible to make a career with. From 1972 he was the lead singer of the rock group Kayak, three years later he adopted the stage name Max Werner. Because Kayak had no real commercial success, he tried his hand as a soloist. His musical role models were the Beach Boys and Phil Collins. That´s why "Rain In May" sounds as if these superstars had been in the studio with him. Max Werner naturally tries to build on this success, but the follow-up singles "Like An Autum Leaf" and "Roadrunner" no longer reach the charts. At the end of the 90s, he returned to Kayak for a short guest appearance when they celebrated their reunion on television. In the fall of 2000, he had to leave the band again for health reasons. He died in April 2024 at the age of 70. from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

But that's okay because they're being featured here. Here you go: London 1969: Ian Hunter, real name Ian Patterson, then 23 years old, fat, ugly, moved to London from Shrewsbury, sometimes employed as a session musician, sometimes as a factory worker, bricklayer or petty thief, always to be found in cheap studios recording demos. Guy Stevens, A&R manager at Island Records, friend of Mick Jagger and Eric Burdon, had just served time in prison for drug abuse. Stan Tippins, Mick Ralphs, Verden Allen, Overend Watts and Dale Griffin, called Buffin: together they wanted to turn their backs on Hereford, where they had enjoyed local fame as a post-playing band, to make their fortune as Silence in London. Who brought Hunter and Stevens and Silence together is unclear: some tell of a "singer wanted" ad in Melody Maker, others of a sound engineer who made the contact, others of a furious Mick Ralphs who wouldn´t let this arrogant Guy Stevens out of his office until a contract was signed - what is certain is that mastermind Guy Stevens replaced Silence singer Stan Tippins with the sun-brilliant substitute Dylan Ian Hunter, renamed Silence Mott The Hoople after a novel character who had made a great impression on him in prison . .. Here´s another good song - "Roll Away The Stone":

Both of these tunes come from albums I absolutely love... "Heartbeat City" by The Cars, and "Slow Train Coming" by Bob Dylan. People forget that "Hello Again" was one of five Top 40 songs from "Heartbreak City", all of them gems IMHO. "Gotta Serve Somebody" has a great message and a bluesy feel. "Slow Train Coming" is Bob Dylan's first album after he converted to Christianity. It has some great tunes on it... give it a listen if you haven't done so already, and I promise I won't call you Zimmy . Here you go:

11/17/84:Peter Wolf - I Need You Tonight REO Speedwagon - I Do Wanna Know Survivor - I Can´t Hold Back The Honeydrippers - Sea Of LoveTommy Shaw - Girls With Guns The White HouseA few days ago, the whole world was once again spellbound to see who would win the battle to move into the White House: But probably hardly anyone thought about where the color, in which the White House shines so white, comes from. It´s the small Bavarian market town of Diedorf with around 10,000 inhabitants to the west of Augsburg. This is where the company "Keimfarben" has its headquarters. Buckingham Palace, parts of the Kremlin wall at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the White House are just a short excerpt from the list of buildings that have been painted with paint from this company. "Our paint lasts longer than any of the competition," says Rüdiger Lugert, Managing Director of the company, confidently. In the early 2000s, a Washington architectural firm that supplies "Keim" with paint established contact with the architect of the White House. During the term of office of President George W. Bush, the seat of government was then painted with "Keimfarben". To this day, the facade has not had to be repainted. "Our paint should last 30 to 40 years," says Lugert. Other buildings last much longer. The town hall in the Swiss municipality of Schwyz was painted with "Keim" paints in 1891 - and then never again. The paint´s longevity is due to its formulation. Most paints are emulsion paints. After painting, the water dries out and the paint settles on the surface, but does not bond with it. The result: after a few years, it begins to flake off and a new coat of paint is needed. "Keimfarben", on the other hand, relies on so-called silicate paints, which use mineral binders. The paint absorbs carbon dioxide from the air, which leads to gel formation, or silicification. "In this way, we achieve a petrification of the paint on the surface," says Lugert. The paint lasts for decades instead of years. "Keimfarben" is not only the world´s leading manufacturer of these silicate paints, but also the inventor of the method. At the end of the 19th century, the Bavarian King Ludwig I returned from a trip to northern Italy. He liked the colorful frescoes he had seen there. However, the Italian colors were not robust enough for the weather in Bavaria. The monarch therefore ordered research into a solution that could be used north of the Alps. The craftsman Adolf Wilhelm Keim finally achieved this feat. In 1878, he patented his recipe and founded the company "Keimfarben". Exactly 100 years later, the Leonhard Moll group of companies took over "Keimfarben" in 1978. The durability of the paints is the company´s flagship, but also regularly leads to criticism. "Tradespeople keep asking me how they are supposed to earn money if the paint lasts so long," says Lugert. "But when I then ask them how often they have painted the same house several times after paint has only lasted a short time, there is silence." "We occasionally come under political scrutiny," says Managing Director Lugert. A few years ago, the Kremlin painted part of its wall with "Keim" products. This is no longer the case. The entrepreneur attributes this to the tensions between Germany and Russia that arose after the Russian annexation of Crimea. However, the current strained transatlantic relations have not had a negative impact on the company´s business. In any case, there is still no need for a new coat of paint at the White House. "I was in Washington two years ago and took the opportunity to look around the White House," reports Lugert. "I was surprised at how good the condition still is. The only dirt I could see was in the place where journalists always wait before press conferences and lean on the wall with their shoes like schoolboys." And before we talk about the different shades of the color white (traffic white, signal white, pure white, cream white, ...), an " enjoy"-edition: 11/17/84:Madonna - Lucky Star New Edition - Cool It Now Rod Stewart - Some Guys Have All The Luck Sheena Easton - Strut The Pointer Sisters - I´m So Excited Time for an extra: OMDAs a guest singles reviewer in Smash Hits, Duran Duran bassist John Taylor described the track "Talking Loud And Clear": "This is very strange. I heard it on Radio 1 recently and it took me aback. It´s very charming. I keep using that word ! It has a nursery rhyme quality. I keep expecting Andy McCluskey to say ´settle down children, Andy Pandy is coming to play´. This is a good record." And Andy McCluskey adds in another interview: "Talking Loud And Clear" actually is one of those songs where in hindsight you go, "Oh yeah, that´s a very pretty, beautiful, bright pop song, but if you sit down and analyze it it´s quite a dysfunctional song. It´s made out of all sorts of weird bits of acoustic bass samples and backwards sleigh bells... Actually it was our demo of a fantastic machine we bought called a Fairlight CMI...we just loaded up a bunch of random sounds into the computer to demo it and we wrote the song." That´s how that came about."

Lucky Luke The adventures of the cowboy Lucky Luke, hero of the comic series of the same name, still bring a smile to adults´ faces. Christie´s auctioned off original Lucky Luke comics for the first time on Friday, a "world premiere" according to the auction house. The 50 original pages by Belgian illustrator Morris fetched a total of almost 2.2 million euros. Most of the individual pages changed hands for between 60 and 70,000 euros.
"This reminds me of my childhood," said Dominique Puts, leaning over a black and white drawing of a saloon scene in the gallery of Christie´s auction house in Paris. The 67-year-old has been a fan for six decades and knows every page, as he proudly explained. "But I can´t afford to bid," he added with a smile.
"Morris is the last author in this category who was not yet on the market," says the head of sales at Christie´s, Vincent Belloy. The illustrator of Lucky Luke is "one of the most outstanding comic artists in the French-speaking world". Morris is on a par with the illustrators of Asterix and Obelix and Tintin, Belloy added.
Morris´ style is "clear, efficient and dynamic" and therefore very modern, says Belloy. The series also reflects the history of the so-called Wild West of the USA. It features the famous cowboys Billy the Kid and Jesse James and the adventurer Calamity Jane.
Lucky Luke defeats a string of crooks in the individual volumes, whether through his cunning, his luck or his quick grip on a revolver. What every fan knows: Lucky Luke shoots faster than his shadow.
Morris, whose real name was Maurice de Bevere, created the lanky cowboy character in 1947. When Morris died in 2001 at the age of 77, he left behind 72 volumes. He had initially written the stories himself, but later concentrated on the drawings and entrusted the scenarios to French author Rene Goscinny. The two had met in New York and worked together until Goscinny´s death in 1977.
And here´s my "power"-Edition:
11/22/80:

Time for an extra: The Buggles
The Buggles were founded in 1979 and had their breakthrough with the single "Video Killed the Radio Star". The song was released on 9/7/1979 and conquered the charts worldwide. Not only was it a huge commercial success, it was also the first music video to be broadcast on the then new music channel MTV in 1981. This success catapulted the band into the limelight and secured them a permanent place in music history.
The Buggles´ sound is a mixture of pop and new wave, characterized by futuristic sounds and innovative production techniques. Their first album "The Age of Plastic" was released in 1980 and includes the famous single as well as other hits such as "The Plastic Age" and "Clean, Clean". The second album, "Adventures in Modern Recording", followed in 1981, shortly before the duo disbanded.
After the dissolution of The Buggles, both members pursued successful careers. Trevor Horn became a respected music producer and worked with a variety of artists, including "Frankie Goes To Hollywood" and the "Pet Shop Boys". Geoff Downes joined the supergroup "Asia", which also enjoyed success in the 1980s. These changes of direction show how versatile and influential the two musicians were in the music industry.
