It consisted of musician and rapper Keith Rodgers, the group´s frontman, and producers Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo - the team behind Village People.
Break Machine was personified by break dancers Lindsay Blake, Lindell Blake and Cortez Jordan. They are named "Break Machine" under an early photo in the then trade magazine Cashbox (3/10/84) and are also listed as "Break Machine" on the record sleeves. Lindell Blake now lives in Las Vegas and is a dancer, singer and choreographer. He has been a dancer in videos of Michael Jackson and has doubled a stunt for Eddie Murphy. He has also worked on cruise ships and for television and theater. The whistle-like hookline so characteristic of this track is still regularly covered today, for example by Scooter, the breakdance troupe Flying Steps and the Southside Rockers. from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits.

Apologies for the late post... end of year school activities! While I really like or love 31 songs from the 5/25/85 countdown, here are my 14 absolute faves:That Was Yesterday, A View To A Kill, Voices Carry, Would I Lie To You, All She Wants To Do Is Dance, Obsession, Just A Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody, In My House, Fresh, Things Can Only Get Better, Some Like It Hot, One Night In Bangkok, Smooth Operator, Everybody Wants To Rule The WorldWhile I really like or love 29 songs from the 5/28/77 countdown, here are my 8 absolute faves:I've Got Love On My Mind, Life In The Fast Lane, Calling Dr. Love, So Into You, Lido Shuffle, Couldn't Get It Right, I'm Your Boogie Man, Sir DukeThe Power Station and Boz Scaggs get recognition as This Week's Pick Hits. If I had to create a Top 100 of All Time list for me, "Some Like It Hot" and "Lido Shuffle" would both make the list. Tony Thompson's drum intro on SLIH alone makes it an awesome tune. LS is both a pop/rocker yet so smooth at the same time. I crank both of these tunes to 11 every time I hear them (actually, more like 16 on my car radio ):

Tina Turner in CarinthiaIn 2017 Tina Turner was a guest at a wedding in Carinthia. The well-known Villach Claudia Susanne Boyneburg Lengsfeld Spendier remembers a long and above all nice conversation with the star. In 2017, she was at the Carinthian Wörthersee, as she was the wedding guest of "Micky" Feichtinger. Well-known Villach entrepreneur Claudia Susanne Boyneburg Lengsfeld Spendier was also a guest at the wedding and she remembers Tina Turner as a "likeable, polite" person. "She told me at the time that her biggest concern is to promote young dynamic women. She also told me that she liked Austria and Carinthia in particular very much," Claudia reminisces. She was also saddened to learn of the singer´s death: "The world will be missing a particularly kind-hearted person !"
In addition to her career, Tina Turner was also committed to women´s rights and worked to empower them. In the 80s, she was one of the pioneers of "Female Emancipation" and made it easier for young women at the time to define themselves as self-confident and independent individuals. Therefore, here are two musically powerful "women"-editions at this point:
5/25/85:
Alison Moyet - Invisible Mary Jane Girls - In My House Patti Labelle - New Attitude
Sade - Smooth Operator Tina Turner - Show Some Respect
11/21/81 (guest-host: Dave Roberts):Diana Ross - Why Do Fools Fall In Love Juice Newton - The Sweetest Thing (I´ve Ever Known)Olivia Newton-John - Physical Sheena Easton - For Your Eyes OnlyThe Go-Go´s - Our Lips Are Sealed Time for an extra: Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy"I've always been very frustrated with people who come in, make records, tell a big story about themselves as artists and what they´re all about. Then they actually make some records and disappear. They were kind of lying. You have to keep going. You don´t make records because you can keep making records, you make records because you want to express something," Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy says in 2004. It´s thanks to this attitude that he´s been active in the music business since the late 1970s, despite numerous disappointments. His career began with a misstep. Born in Birmingham in 1960, Stephen met bassist John Taylor and keyboardist Nick Rhodes at art college in 1979. Together they form Duran Duran. After a few months, however, Stephen decides he would rather join "The Hawk". While he bumbles along with his new comrades-in-arms, Rhodes and Taylor make it big with new singer Simon LeBon. "The biggest jinx in pop history," one English music editor calls him. After Stephen finally manages a successful single with "Kiss Me," he turns down an offer to write songs for a young American singer. Her name: Madonna. Instead of boasting a success like "Like A Virgin", he embarks on a solo career. In the second half of the 80s, he initially presents danceable material and lands a hit in 1985 with "Icing On The Cake", but later devotes himself to folk rock. With his backing band "The Lilac Times", to which his brother Nick also belongs, he releases several albums, sings a contribution on a Leonard Cohen tribute album and enters into an idiosyncratic collaboration with violinist Nigel Kennedy ("In Colors", 1993). Along the way, he also releases works under his own name. Although he attracts attention again with Nick Rhodes under the alias "The Devils" with "Dark Circles" in 2001, Stephen ends up without a record deal. He rejoins "Lilac Time" and records the self-financed and self-produced "Keep Going" (2003). According to his own statements, it is his most personal album, but with its quiet folk tones it is initially lost in the general disinterest. In 2004 Robbie Williams releases the single "Radio". The co-writer: Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy. The collaboration extends to Williams' "Intensive Care" (2005). Suddenly, Stephen is the talk of the town again and gets a new record deal. "Keep Going" lands on the shelves again with a new press campaign. The second work with Robbie Williams, "Rudebox" (2006) disappoints, however, and seals the collaboration. Stephen returns to "Lilac Time" and strikes again rather calm tones with "Runout Groove" (2007). In 2008 Stephen marries band member Claire Worrall (once keyboardist in Robbie Williams´ backing band), retreats to Cornwall and takes it easy in the following years. from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits.

Geils Band receives both of my Shooda Dun Betr Picks this week. One music critic called The J. Geils Band, "Too White for the Black kids, and too Black for the White kids" ... which might explain their lack of Top 10 hits until "Centerfold" made their career. "Give It To Me" just has a groove in the second half of the song (the full album version is featured here) while "Love Stinks" is an early 80s perfect pop/rock tune that just didn't fit in with Top 40 stations that leaned Adult Contemporary at the time. By the way, I'm featuring one of those "reaction" videos by Jamel AKA Jamal for GITM... who pronounces the name of the band as "The J. Gills Band" ... but it's fun watching his reaction to the song!:

Beat the city
The beat the city competitions are urban obstacle races for men and women who are looking for a special sporting challenge. The runs take place directly in the city centers of Linz, Innsbruck and Graz. Thanks to the at least 20 natural and artificial obstacles on the at least 10 km long courses right through the city center, variety is guaranteed. Sport, fun and city - these are precisely the factors that make the beat the city competitions a tough challenge. Not only endurance counts here, but also strength, dexterity, agility and cleverness.
Of course, there are also separate competitions for the youngest among you. For kids and teenagers between 8 and 15 years there are the Junior Athlons in the respective city. On a distance of about 2km the Juniors have to master about 10 obstacles.
Together the city is conquerable for all.
And here are my "beat the city"-editions of the week:
6/7/80 (A):
Billy Joel - It´s Still Rock And Roll To Me Dr. Hook - Sexy Eyes Lipps, Inc. - Funky Town Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall Rocky Burnette - Tired Of Toein´ The Line
6/6/87 (B):

Time for an extra: Earth & Fire
A Dutch band caused full dance floors in Europe´s discotheques in 1980. As cheerful as "Weekend" may sound, the lyrics are anything but sunny and beautiful. The singer is aware that she is only his weekend love. She sings full of longing about the fact that parting on Sunday is hard to bear and that feeling is already there when her lover reappears on the scene on Friday night.
It´s certainly one of the many songs where no one pays attention to the lyrics, because the cheerful, relaxed reggae-pop of the band Earth & Fire just invites you to associate the song with the feeling "Finally weekend". That´s how it will have been when "Weekend" was released in the Netherlands in November 1979.
Earth & Fire had already been around for ten years at that point. The band was founded by twin brothers Chris and Gerard Koerts. In addition to the twins, Earth & Fire - similar to the most popular group in Holland at the time of its formation, Shocking Blue - had a female vocalist to offer. Jerney Kaagman quickly became the heartthrob of many young men in the country. The front woman of Earth & Fire, whose voice and attractiveness were the trademark of the group for many years, remained very successful even after leaving the band. She knew how to market not only her voice: With exclusive photos, she ensured record circulations of the Dutch Playboy and as a juror in a casting show for top ratings.
The music of Earth & Fire was also stylistically not far from Shocking Blue. Maybe they were even a little bit more rocking than the established band. Already with their first single "Seasons", released at the end of 1969, they climbed up to #2 in the Dutch sales charts. The band landed their first #1 hit in 1972 with "Memories".
After a creative break between 1977 and 1979 with some changes in the band, Earth & Fire came back with the pop song "Weekend". The song had been written by one of the twins, the keyboard player Gerard Koerts. In December, the party song was #1 on the charts in their home country.
The song itself was covered in many other countries and was, for example, in Sweden by the local band Chips both in 1980 and 1997 a hit that could not be missing at any party.

Disclaimer: I am taking my first full week of vacation in two years this week. This may mean more "absolute faves" than usual ... While I really like or love 32 songs from the 6/10/78 countdown, these 12 are my absolute faves:Feels So Good, Baker Street, On Broadway, With A Little Luck, Baby Hold On, Love Is Like Oxygen, Dance With Me, The Closer I Get To You, You Belong To Me, Deacon Blues, Imaginary Lover, Miss You While I really like or love 23 songs from the 6/12/82 countdown, these 12 are my absolute faves:Don't Talk To Strangers, The Other Woman, 867-5309/Jenny, Let It Whip, '65 Love Affair, Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny), Caught Up In You, Did It In A Minute, Play The Game Tonight, Only The Lonely, Fantasy, Forget Me NotsThe Nines have it as Sweet and Hall & Oates are This Week's Pick Hits... both songs peaked at #9. You know what I love about both songs? The intros. "Love Is Like Oxygen" sounds orchestral at times and then rocks out while "Did It In A Minute" kicks off like an '80s soundtrack tune then pop-rocks out. The album version of LILO is featured below along with DIIAM:

So I decided to build it myself." (Ferry Porsche) For 75 years, everything can be traced back to this one dream. It founded a colorful history like no other. On 6/8/1948, the first vehicle bearing the Porsche name was registered: the 356 "No.1" Roadster. The designer and namesake was Ferry Porsche. The siblings Louise Piëch and Ferry Porsche moved the headquarters of Porsche Konstruktionen GmbH to Alpenstrasse in Salzburg in 1949. Porsche soon dominated international motorsport and ensured success at the legendary domestic races on the Gaisberg and at Lake Zell in the 1960s. To this day, Porsche has the headquarters of various development and design offices in Salzburg. And here are the " car radio"-editions of the week: 6/12/82 (A):38 Special - Caught Up In You Asia - Heat Of The Moment John Cougar - Hurts So Good Paul Davis - ´65 Love Affair The Human League - Don´t You Want Me 6/11/88 (B):Bruce Hornsby & The Range - The Valley Road Jane Wiedlin - Rush Hour Pebbles - Mercedes Boy Poison - Nothin´ But A Good Time Times Two - Strange But True 1/12/80 (guest-host: Mick Cleary):Kenny Rogers - Coward Of The County Kool & The Gang - Ladies Night Sugarhill Gang - Rapper´s Delight Supertramp - Take The Long Way Home Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Don´t Do Me Like That Time for an extra: Astrud GilbertoIn 1968, Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto released an album that pointed beyond what she is mainly associated with. The Bahia-born artist recorded "Windy," a genuine pop record. Bossa nova had now entered the U.S. mainstream. Astrud Gilberto was now, in a sense, reaping her deserved artistic harvest. Actually, she had never intended to become a singer. She had accompanied her husband João, considered one of the inventors of bossa nova, to the USA. With virtually the entire bossa nova scene, they had set out to present a new music on a grand scale. The Brazilian kids had created something new largely unnoticed. And thus reached a new level of intercultural exchange. The Brazilian protagonists were tired of the music of the local radios. So they obsessively pursued U.S. cool jazz. Until they finally invented a new musical style themselves. A cool jazz timbre is also often attributed to Astrud Gilberto. The fact that her voice was ever recorded, however, is due to a coincidence. When João Gilberto recorded "The Girl From Ipanema" with Stan Getz, a female voice was needed. Since Astrud was the only Brazilian present who spoke English, she took the microphone. The recording is a classic today. So is "Corcovado," the other song on the "Getz/ Gilberto" album on which she sang. These two songs spread bossa nova worldwide. To this day, their legacy continues to influence the development of music worldwide. But to reduce Astrud Gilberto to this birth would be unfair. Some sometimes excellent bossa nova and jazz albums were followed by "Windy" in 1968. On this the singer interpreted pop songs between bossa and sunshine pop. from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits.

^ mkarns ... I like your categories! While I really like or love 33 songs from the 6/22/86 countdown, these 5 are my absolute faves:Holding Back The Years, Sledgehammer, When The Heart Rules The Mind, Digging Your Scene, Modern Woman*While I really like or love 27 songs from the 6/22/74 countdown, these 13 are my absolute faves:You Make Me Feel Brand New, Sundown, If You Love Me Let Me Know*, Hollywood Swinging, Midnight At The Oasis, Rock The Boat, Rock Your Baby, Help Me, The Locomotion, The Show Must Go On, Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing, I'm In Love, Radar Love* Billy Joel and Olivia Newton-John are This Week's Pick Hits. "Modern Woman" and "If You Love Me, Let Me Know" get little airplay today which is a shame. I love the frantic tempo on Billy Joel's tune. On ONJ's song, is it okay to admit I sing along with the backup singer with the super deep voice ?
