While I really like or love 31 songs from the 4/30/83 countdown, these 7 are my absolute faves:Twilight Zone, I Know There's Something Going On*, Stranger In My House, I Won't Hold You Back, She Blinded Me With Science, Der Kommissar, Mr. RobotoWhile I really like or love 29 songs from the 4/28/79 countdown, these 6 are my absolute faves:Rock & Roll Fantasy, Renegade*, Disco Nights (Rock Freak), Sultans Of Swing, Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground), I Want Your LoveFrida and Styx are This Week's Shooda Dun Betr Picks. "I Know There's Something Going On" and "Renegade" got tons of airplay on my favorite stations in St. Louis at the time... KHTR for Frida, and KSLQ for Styx (and both AT40 stations at those respective times). Phil Collin's drums do it for me on IKTSGO (Frida's dancing in the video doesn't ) while Tommy Shaw's a cappella opening on R does the trick for me: Disclaimer: Four 13-hour work days in a row may be affecting my absolute faves count on the above countdowns... that or radio overplay for some of the '83 tunes that didn't make my faves list.

4/30/83:Culture Club - Time (Clock Of The Heart) DeBarge - I Like It Jarreau - Mornin´Patrick Simmons - So Wrong Ronnie Milsap - Stranger In My House
A special show for Labour Day (5/1/23):
1/16/88 (guest-host: Charlie Van Dyke):Debbie Gibson - Shake Your Love Heart - There´s The Girl Men Without Hats - Pop Goes The World Paul Carrack - Don´t Shed A Tear Tiffany - Could´ve BeenAmadeus Austrian Music Awards
The Amadeus Austrian Music Awards is the annual awards ceremony for excellence in the Austrian music industry. It has been awarded to the most successful Austrian musicians since 2000, and has been held in the Volkstheater in Vienna since 2012. It´s the Austrian equivalent to the Grammys. The awards ceremony was founded by IFPI Austria in 2000, and was broadcast by the Austrian national broadcaster ORF. Since 2012, the ceremony has been held in Volkstheater, after previously being held in Gasometer B, Kunsthalle Wien, and Wiener Stadthalle. Awards can be awarded to any musician with Austrian citizenship or who have established their career in Austria. And here are my " musical"-editions from this week´s AT40 shows: 4/30/83:David Bowie - Let´s Dance Dexys Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen Duran Duran - Hungry Like The Wolf Frida - I Know There´s Something Going On Thomas Dolby - She Blinded Me With Science 1/16/88 (guest-host: Charlie Van Dyke):Belinda Carlisle - Heaven Is A Place On Earth Def Leppard - Animal Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere New Order - True Faith Steve Winwood - Valerie Time for an extra: IndeepIndeep was led by its songwriter-musician Michael Cleveland, and it was known for employing a strong disco-esque bass line and early hip hop lyrics backed by two female singers: Rejane Magloire and Rose Marie Ramsey. Michael Cleveland´s rap is perhaps the spiritual followup to Deborah Harry´s moment in 1979´s Rapture. "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" starts out with a then technologically astounding Casio beat. Just at the right moment, a bubbly bassline drops that keeps everything humming. A disco inspired guitar enters to jazz up the proceedings. At this point, everybody should be along for the full ride. Before all the infinite why´s and how´s can pollute your thoughts, the mystery expands to the DJ imploring the woman vocalist ´you gotta get up, you gotta get on, you gotta get down girl´. The lyrics reveal she can’t reach her (possibly philandering) man by telephone. She then jumps in the car and slams on her brakes when she comes to her senses. Then she is soothed by the DJ´s mix that cures her half broken heart. Thematically, the song can be a reflection on the power of art/music to cure and heal, or how to get over being in a crappy relationship, or just how much fun it was to go to clubs in the 80s. from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits.

Favorite song count from the 5/9/87 show? 28. Absolute faves? 6: Looking For A New Love, The Finer Things, Serious, Walking Down Your Street, Come As You Are, Dominoes*
Favorite song count from the 5/1/71 chart? 16. Absolute faves? 6: What's Going On, Another Day, Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me), We Can Work It Out, Love Her Madly, Friends*
Robbie Nevil and Elton John are This Week's Shooda Dun Betr Picks. Elton only getting to #34 with "Friends"? At least Robbie got close to the Top 10 (#14) with "Dominoes"... but somehow, "Wot's It To Ya" (a much worse song IMHO) somehow cracked the Top 10. "Dominoes" and "Friends" deserved better fates!

5/9/87:Bangles - Walking Down Your Street Genesis - In Too DeepPeter Wolf - Come As You Are Poison - Talk Dirty To Me Simply Red - The Right Thing The Viennese picture postcardToday, they are often perceived as kitschy nostalgia carriers or trivial everyday objects. But the picture postcard was once modern and was one of the defining mass media of the 20th century. Its rapid and worldwide distribution around 1900 brought about a kind of ´image revolution´ and made the illustrated postcard the first global image medium par excellence. And their career is still not over, despite media competition. To this day, postcards play an important role in the perception, representation and documentation of the city. The exhibition is the first attempt to comprehensively show the history of the picture postcard in Vienna. The focus is on illustrations and representations of the city, its streets, squares and buildings. In the beginning, the picture postcard was more than a mediator of tourist greetings and central sights: It also showed side streets and inns of the suburbs, recorded important current events and was popularly collected. It was not until later that its repertoire narrowed down to a few, template-like motifs in mass tourism. Using Vienna as an example, the exhibition explores the specific medial characteristics and conditions of origin of the picture postcard - as a means of communication and advertising, as a collector´s item and as an art form. How has it changed over the course of more than 100 years ? What images of the city did it convey ? What approaches are there today to adapt them in a new way ? Last but not least, the question of how this traditional analog medium continues to have an effect in the electronic media will be explored. The following picture postcard shows the Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel before 1920: It´s also possible to get married in a gondola of the Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel. The wedding is celebrated in the Art Nouveau carriage. The wedding ceremony begins after the wedding car starts moving. The wedding vows are pronounced at the highest point. A maximum of 12 people - including the registrar - can be accommodated in each carriage. For larger parties, there is the possibility of renting another carriage, or to feed the guests during the wedding ceremony in the new Salettl with a glass of Prosecco and small appetizers. Suitable for such a ride is the following " wedding"-edition: 5/9/87: Atlantic Starr - Always Chris DeBurgh - The Lady In Red Glenn Medeiros - Nothing´s Gonna Change My Love For YouLisa Lisa & Cult Jam - Head To Toe Smokey Robinson - Just To See Her
Time for an extra: Herb AlpertIn the 5/9/87 show, we learn that Herb Alpert had one vocal (This Guy´s in Love with You, 1968) and one instrumental (Rise, 1979) #1. In 1984, Herb Alpert released "Bullish" together with Tijuana Brass: from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits.

Paul Carrack - One Good Reason Times Two - Strange But True Mother´s DayAs far back as ancient Greece and Rome, 250 years before Christ, worship rituals were held for well-known goddesses, such as Rhea or Kybele and Attis. However, Mother´s Day in its current form has only existed since 1872, when Ann Maria Reeves Jarivs, a U.S. representative of the women´s movement, campaigned for the introduction of an official holiday in honor of mothers. Mother´s Day thus became a national holiday in the USA for the first time in 1914. In the meantime, Mother´s Day has become an important economic factor for the retail sector. In Italy, Mother´s Day has been renamed "Festa dei Fioristi e dei Pasticceri" (Festival of Florists and Confectioners). Traditionally, mothers receive a small token of appreciation on Mother´s Day. Particularly popular gifts include flowers, chocolates, gift certificates, a homemade cake, a perfume or a dinner invitation. In addition, many children make an effort to do something good for their mothers and relieve them of some household chores on Mother´s Day, such as cooking, cleaning, washing or ironing. In many elementary schools, a poem is rehearsed on the occasion of the holiday, which is then proudly recited to the mother. Usually, on Mother´s Day, the whole family goes on an outing and the mother is invited. And here is my " Mother´s Day"-edition: 5/14/88:Belinda Carlisle - Circle In The Sand Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine - Anything For YouLita Ford - Kiss Me Deadly Natalie Cole - Pink Cadillac Whitney Houston - Where Do Broken Hearts GoTime for an extra: Spice Girls"Mama" is an affectionate tribute which can be applied to mothers worldwide. The song is the Spice Girls´ declaration of love for their beloved mothers. The narrator realizes in her adult life that everything her mother did when she was a child was for her own good. At first, she felt, like everyone else that her biggest enemy was the mother who kept inhibiting her freedom. But she now has a friend in her mother and expresses her admiration for her. She also acknowledges that though she didn´t heed to her mother´s advice, she has come to believe that everything she said, and all her instructions were the best for her. As she puts it, her mother did all that out of love. The narrator´s underlying message is that mothers are often misunderstood and unappreciated. Thus she seeks to make her mum feel the love she had probably been denied throughout the years. During the writing process, each member wrote a small verse in a different corner of the recording studio, while the chorus was finished around the piano with a guitar. Then, the producers added a gospel choir filled with the group's harmonies at the end of the song. from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits.

With 5/19/84 played last year, here's my favorites list from then... My Top 32 songs from the 5/19/84 countdown with 13 absolute faves in bold (of which only 2 hit the Top 10!):Top 10: Hello, Let's Hear It For The Boy, Against All Odds, Time After Time, Love Somebody, Oh Sherrie, You Might Think, Footloose #11-20: Head Over Heels, The Reflex, The Longest Time, The Authority Song, Sister Christian, They Don't Know, Dancing In The Sheets, I'll Wait, Tonight#21-30: The Heart Of Rock & Roll, No More Words, Self-Control, Miss Me Blind, White Horse, Rock You Like A Hurricane, Jump, You Can't Get What You Want#31-40: It's My Life, Run Runaway, A Fine Fine Day, My Ever Changing Moods, Stay The Night, Who's That Girl, Almost Paradise While I really like or love 30 songs from the 5/18/74 countdown, here are my 14 absolute faves:The Locomotion, The Show Must Go On, Midnight At The Oasis, TSOP, Help Me, Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing, I'm In Love, Come & Get Your Love, Mighty Mighty, If You Love Me, Hollywood Swinging, My Mistake (Was To Love You)*, The Lord's Prayer, Lookin' For A Love
BONUS (since I cut and pasted my '84 list)... While I really like or love 22 songs from the 5/20/89 countdown, here are my 4 absolute faves:Real Love/J. Watley, Close My Eyes Forever/L. Ford & O. Osbourne*, Cult Of Personality/Living Colour, I Drove All Night/C. Lauper* This Week's Pick Hits are duets or by a duo... Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye, Lita Ford & Ozzy Osbourne, and Style Council (Mike Talbot & Paul Weller). "My Ever Changing Moods" is a pop song that doesn't sound like a mid 80s tune but it's incredible ear candy for me. "My Mistake (Was To Love You)" is such a feel-good tune musically. "Close My Eyes Forever" is somewhat eerie but that's what makes it a cool tune.
