My Top 28 songs from the 11/13/82 countdown with absolute faves in bold: Top 10: Up Where We Belong, Heart Attack, Gloria, Who Can It Be Now, Jack & Diane, You Can Do Magic, I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near) #11-20: Eye In The Sky, Maneater, Mickey, Steppin' Out, The One You Love, You Don't Want Me Anymore, Love Come Down, Southern Cross #21-30: New World Man, Pressure, Shadows Of The Night, It's Raining Again, Love Me Tomorrow, Gypsy #31-40: The Look Of Love, Dirty Laundry, IGY (What A Beautiful World)*, Heartbreaker, Missing You, I'm So Excited, Rock The Casbah
My Top 19 songs from the 11/14/70 countdown: Top 10: I'll Be There, We've Only Just Begun, Fire & Rain, I Think I Love You, Green-Eyed Lady, Tears Of A Clown, Gypsy Woman, It Don't Matter To Me #11-20: All Right Now, Montego Bay, Cracklin' Rosie, Super Bad, Lola, Heaven Help Us All #21-30: Express Yourself, Share The Land #31-40: El Condor Pasa*, Our House, After Midnight
* Simply going with the lowest peaking songs of my favorites for this week's Shooda Dun Betr Picks. Donald f*gen wasn't made for MTV one year after MTV's premiere so that may explain the #26 peak. "El Condor Pasa" is a cool kind of quirky tune... maybe too quirky for some?

11/13/82:Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes - Up Were We BelongRush - New World Man Steel Breeze - You Don´t Want Me Anymore Survivor - American Heartbeat The Clash - Rock The Casbah Load limitHospital staff in intensive care units in Austria´s hospitals have reached the limit of exposure after more than one and a half years of pandemic. "I don´t know where the motivation comes from among all our colleagues", says health nurse Karin Engl, head of a Covid-19 intensive care unit at Kepler University Hospital Linz. She continues: "There are days when not only the young sisters, but also the old sisters and I cry – but rather out of desperation. If we don´t know what it´ll be like tomorrow." On the hospital´s intranet, they would be able to track how many patients were admitted as a result of Covid-19. "They are rising steeply, and then we know that a certain percentage of those who come today will be with us in a week´s time. And now that the station is full, I wonder, where are we going to put those who come today, next week, unless someone dies again and a bed becomes vacant ?” Engls looks to the future with little hope: "The fourth wave now, I´m afraid, won’t be our last. The pandemic is not over. It was not over, and I do not think it will pass so quickly." And for all those who do such backbreaking work in these times here´s a " greatest hits"-edition: 11/13/82:Don Henley - Dirty Laundry John Cougar - Jack And Diane Supertramp - It´s Raining Again The Pointer Sisters - I´m So Excited The Stray Cats - Rock This Town And for those who have already lost friends and loved ones to the pandemic, a " memory"-edition: 11/13/82:Eddie Rabbitt & Crystal Gayle - You And I Glenn Frey - The One You Love Lionel Richie - Truly Michael Jackson & Paul McCartney - The Girl Is Mine The Alan Parsons Project - Eye In The SkyTime for an Italian extra: Al Bano & Romina PowerLaura Branigan climbs to #4 this week with her cover version of "Gloria" - the original comes from Italy and so this week we are looking at Italy in 1982.
Romina Power, daughter of Hollywood stars Tyrone Power and Linda Christian, met Albano Carrisi (artist name Al Bano) during a film shoot. In 1967´s "Nel Sole", she played a rich girl at her mother´s side; Carrisi portrayed her admirer from simple circumstances – just like in real life. She was only 15 years old, he was 23. When Romina became pregnant, they married in 1970 against the will of both families. As a vocal duo, Al Bano & Romina Power quickly became successful and represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1976 and 1985. At the San Remo Festival, they regularly won prizes, dominated the gossip press and the charts of Italo-Pop. "Felicita" made the couple international stars in the early 1980s. Their personal happiness was crowned by the children Ylenia and Yari in the 70s, Christel and Romina in the 80s. The wholesome world on the estate in Cellino San Marco in southern Italy seemed perfect: love, a host of children, a beautiful home – and a large portion of fame and money. In 1994, however, the fortune of the picturebook family was shattered: the eldest daughter Ylenia, then 23, disappeared without a trace in New Orleans. With street musician Alexander Masakela, she had rented in the French Quarter and left her hotel alone on New Year´s Eve 1993, "quiet and rested", as her companion later explained. Since 1/6/1994, Ylenia is officially missing and has not been found to this day. Romina Power never gave up hope that her daughter was kidnapped, but she´s still alive. Through television shows at home and abroad, she began to look for Ylenia and even consulted fortune tellers. Al Bano wanted to find a specific explanation and suspected that his daughter had drowned in Mississippi after taking drugs, which angered his wife. In the following years, Ylenia was reportedly seen all over the world. She lives in the Dominican Republic, a Spanish tabloid reporter wrote in 2005. In addition to kidnapping or suicide, there was further speculation: Ylenia would no longer tolerate a life in the gossip press and would no longer want to keep in touch with her parents. Grief and despair finally destroyed the happiness of the parents. Albano Carrisi and Romina Power did not perform together anymore, divorced in 1999 and publicly carried out their war of roses in the media – ruthless and hurtful. In 2011, Romina cursed in a Spanish talk show: "He was a dictator ! When he got upset, he started screaming. He even kicked me once. He was morbidly jealous and behaved like a tyrant. Our marriage was hell." Al Bano, however, affirmed: "She was the woman of my life", he had "treated Romina like a Madonna" – and half of Italy cried with pity. He made a solo career, had children again with an Italian show star, became a winemaker. She went on a self-discovery course, found Buddhism, moved to the United States. In December 2014, an Italian court finally declared Ylenia Carrisi dead. Her father had arranged it, and after years of hesitation, he probably wanted to end it. In November 2015, the Italian police, in collaboration with US colleagues, took saliva samples from the family. In 1994, a woman´s body was found in Florida, but never identified. The suspect was the eight-time murderer Keith Hunter Jesperson, known as the "Happy Face Killer". But the DNA examination revealed that Ylenia was not the unidentified dead person. From better times - here are Al Bano & Romina Power with "Felicita": from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

11/19/83:Huey Lewis & The News - Heart And Soul Irene Cara - Why Me JoBoxers - Just Got Lucky Spandau Ballet - TrueThe Human League - Mirror Man Emergency brake for AustriaIn Austria, due to the current Coronavirus infection situation, a temporary lockdown will come into effect from 11/22 until 12/13 at the latest. Gastronomy, cultural and event industries as well as retail (except for daily needs) all over Austria will close on Monday, said Federal Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) and Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein (Greens) at a press conference with the regional governors of Tyrol, Günther Platter (ÖVP), and Vienna, Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) last Thursday. There will be an all-day curfew for all, Mückstein continues. Wherever possible, there should be a home office, the FFP2 mask obligation is being tightened up. The lockdown is initially valid for ten days and is then evaluated. It should last a maximum of 20 days. As of 1/2/2022 there will also be a nationwide mandatory vaccination. "We don´t want a 5th wave", says Schallenberg. And the necessary strength gives us ... the music: Music acts on all levels of the brain with direct access to our emotions. Music may help our body better than many medicines to activate already existing healing powers, says Stefan Kölsch from the University of Bergen in Norway. While cooking, we hum to pop songs from the radio and snip to the beat when a particularly groovy song is playing. Peter Vuust of the Music in the Brain Institute in Aarhus, Denmark, has explored the secret of groove and knows why we can’t sit still on some songs anymore. In sports, we let cool beats drive us to high performance. Tom Fritz from the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig has found out: We get even more powerful when we create the music ourselves during training. That´s why I have a " greatest-hits"-edition this week: 11/19/83:David Bowie - Modern Girl Lionel Richie - All Night Long Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson - Say Say Say Peter Schilling - Major Tom (Coming Home) Yes - Owner Of A Lonely Heart Time for an extra: Hubert KahIt is always interesting for me to hear German originals in English. Hubert Kah (born Hubert Kemmler) is a German musician, composer, lyricist and producer. At the age of 10 he began playing the piano (Bach and Mozart). When Hubert was 17, he performed as Elvis for a week at a school party. In 1978 he won the competition “Who dances like John Travolta ?” in Kempten. Hubert met Marcus Löhr (guitar) and Klaus Hirschburger (bass) with the group "Eject". After some time they called themselves "Choice Quality" and tried their luck with new German hit music. On the way home from the movie Hubert remembered the first lines of the chorus to "Rosemarie". After a performance at the Mannheim discotheque "Quo vadis", producer Claus Zundel came to Hubert and offered him a record contract. In general, discos brought Hubert luck. He met Susanne at a discotheque in Hamburg. Constantly changing drummers confused the fans. Solution of the riddle: the desired drummer Reinhold Hirth was still under contract with other bands, so they got the handsome Niko Kimmerle for TV appearances and preferred the more musical Achim Czech for live concerts.
Hubert Kah´s live performances were a colorful, raging pop revue. Fantasy uniforms, striped flood pants, toy trumpets and Mickey Mice – everything was allowed in Hubert´s Wonderland. Hubert Kah appeared in his nightgown for his smash "Sternenhimmel" ("Starry sky"):
Here´s Hubert Kah with his english versions of "Rosemarie" and "Engel 07", "Rosemary" and "Angel 07":

Sheena Easton - Do It For Love Stevie Nicks - Talk To Me The Cars - Tonight She Comes Dancing Stars 2021Cabaret artist Caroline Athanasiadis is the new dancing star of Austria: On Friday evening she prevailed in the final of the ORF dance show "Dancing Stars" together with professional dance partner Danilo Campisi in the jump-off against pool billiard world champion Jasmin Ouschan and her partner Florian Gschaider and crowned herself the winner of the 14th Staff of the success format. With the beginning of the Advent season the dance season ends, but this week there is still a " dance"-edition, because not only Christmas but also New Year´s Eve is not far away: 12/7/85:
Dire Straits - Walk Of Life (jive) Lionel Richie - Say You, Say Me (rumba)Miami Sound Machine - Conga (samba) Starship - We Built This City (jive) Survivor - Burning Heart (foxtrot) Time for a Christmas extra: Shakin´ StevensWritten by Bob Heatlie and produced by Dave Edmunds, Welsh singer and songwriter Shakin´ Stevens creates one of the most popular Christmas songs of the 80s. The song is in the drawer for a long time before it is released. Originally planned for the fall in 1984, the release was postponed for a year to avoid competing with the out-of-control success of Band Aid´s single "Do They Know It´s Christmas ?”. The commercial strategy pays off: Shakin´ Stevens reaches top positions in the UK and many other European countries with his Christmas song. The song reached #4 in the Austrian charts in the last season 2020/21 – behind Mariah Carey, Wham ! and Chris Rea. This year he starts the current Christmas season from #51 this week.

"You know, during the last 10 years or so it's become a familiar part of the theatrics of rock and roll concerts to see guitarists tossing their instruments around on stage, but this next group in the countdown features a man who throws a 20 pound, $2000 cello in the air, catching it just before it hits the ground, the impressive cello toss is performed by Englishman Hugh McDowell, a former member of the London Symphony Orchestra and currently 1/7th of The Electric Light Orchestra, a couple of years ago that crowd pleasing stunt backfired on him, the group was appearing in Houston, Texas, and right in the middle of their last number, Hugh went into his cello hoisting routine throwing the big instrument high in the air, but this time, he got so carried away by the response of the crowd, he forgot to catch the cello on its way down and it crashed into the stage, into a dozen pieces, well, the audience loved it, they thought it was part of the act, but Hugh was stunned, he didn't know what to do, finally, he just picked up the pieces of his shattered cello, and in the finest tradition of rock and roll, tossed them to the crowd as souvenirs, we got the story from the group's drummer Bev Bevan who tells us, believe it or not, Hugh McDowell is still tossing his cello around during those concerts, but nowadays he travels with a spare backstage, this week, The Electric Light Orchestra debuts with their latest, at #36, this is, Turn to Stone..."

Apologies for the later than usual post. When you work in education in Michigan, and you have an event like the shooting of four high school students in Oxford, it made students very, very tense at school! My Top 30 songs from the 12/8/84 countdown with my absolute faves in bold:Top 10: Out Of Touch, Wake Me Up Before You Go Go, I Feel For You, Wild Boys, No More Lonely Nights, Sea Of Love, Penny Lover, Cool It Now, We Belong#11-20: Like A Virgin, Better Be Good To Me, I Can't Hold Back, Strut, Purple Rain, Valotte, Walking On A Thin Line #21-30: Born In The USA, Do What You Do, Run To You, Hello Again, I Just Called To Say I Love You, Misunderstanding, You're The Inspiration, Centipede #31-40: Desert Moon, Stranger In Town, Jamie, The Boys Of Summer, Easy Lover, Loverboy Since we just heard a '77 countdown four weeks ago, I'll feature my faves from this week's 1965 - 1969 charts:12/4/65: Turn Turn Turn, I Got You (I Feel Good), Rescue Me, A Taste Of Honey, Ain't That Peculiar, Get Off My Cloud, Fever**, The Sounds Of Silence12/3/66: Good Vibrations, You Keep Me Hangin' On, Last Train To Clarksville, I Know I'm Losing You, Reach Out I'll Be There 12/9/67: Daydream Believer, Incense & Peppermints, I Heard It Through The Grapevine (GN&TP), Hello Goodbye, Soul Man, Expressway To Your Heart 12/7/68: Love Child, Hey Jude, For Once In My Life, I Heard It Through The Grapevine (MG), Magic Carpet Ride, Stormy, Both Sides Now, White Room, Midnight Confessions12/6/69: Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye, Something, Down On The Corner, And When I Die, Someday We'll Be Together, Eli's Coming, Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head, Cherry Hill Park*, Baby It's You, Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, I Want You Back, Whole Lotta Love, I Can't Get Next To You, Sugar Sugar, Evil Woman Don't Play Your Games With Me* This Week's Pick Hits are from The Honeydrippers, Herb Alpert, and Billy Joe Royal. I keep hammering the horn thing here but wow, there are some cool trombone lines heard on "Cherry Hill Park"! Of course, Herb's trumpet is in fine form on "A Taste Of Honey". The Honeydrippers '84 hit fits right in with the other two picks: ** Special pick: "Fever" by The McCoys. I don't care that they ripped off their own song, "Hang On Sloopy", for this song. Just watch the go-go dancers in their "cages". I could watch the dancers forever and ever and ever... . The audio quality is just okay here but really, that's okay :

Immaculate conception (12/8) is a bank holiday in Austria, therefore, I have selected a special show as a bonus:
1/11/86 (guest host: Charlie Van Dyke):Mr. Mister - Kyrie Sade - The Sweetest TabooSheila E. - A Love Bizarre Simple Minds - Alive And Kicking The Cars - Tonight She Comes 100 years of BurgenlandThis year, Austria´s youngest federal state celebrates its 100th anniversary as a member of the Republic of Austria. The name Burgenland goes back to the four former administrative units – Pressburg, Wieselburg, Ödenburg and Eisenburg. Today none of the areas are in the actual Burgenland, but the name has remained. Throughout history, Burgenland has been the scene of great events. The great waves of emigration to America, the ethnic groups and the time during and after World War II have had a lasting impact on history. So is the artificial border – the Iron Curtain – that divided society for a long time. When the Iron Curtain fell in 1989, the region transformed from a place of division into an area of cohesion and unification. A comprehensive exhibition at the newly renovated Schlaining Castle is dedicated to the anniversary. Exhibits, photos and interesting stories from the past provide an insight into the Burgenland of that time. In addition to the large anniversary exhibition, there are numerous small events and initiatives that make Burgenland a topic in all its diversity.
And so, here are my " greatest hits"-editions for this week: 12/8/84:Bruce Springsteen - Born In The USA Madonna - Like A Virgin Philip Bailey & Phil Collins - Easy Lover U 2 - Pride (In The Name Of Love) Wham ! - Wake Me Up Before You Go Go 1/11/86 (guest-host: Charlie Van Dyke):A-ha - The Sun Always Shines On TV Dire Straits - Walk Of Life James Brown - Living In America Lionel Richie - Say You, Say MeWhitney Houston - How Will I Know Time for a Christmas extra: Jose FelicianoThis week´s introduction to Stevie Wonder´s "I Just Called To Say I Love You" features an overview of blind artists who have reached the AT40. Among them is the Puerto Rican Jose Feliciano, who has been a musical genius since childhood. Already at the age of five he plays perfect guitar and accordion. At 17 he feeds his entire extended family with his performances. Shortly thereafter, he signed his first record deal and became a superstar in the New York metropolitan area and later throughout Latin America. At the height of his career, he finally writes a song in just five minutes that should help him achieve worldwide fame. He remembers his childhood and wonderful Christmas celebrations with the whole family. Only the musical decoration of the festival was already a bit too monotonous for him. So he writes a cheerful, powerful and above all incredibly catchy Christmas pop song. "Feliz Navidad" became the most famous song of his career. The song reached #11 in the Austrian charts in the last season 2020/21. This year he starts the current Christmas season from #53 this week. Here´s Jose Felciano with “Feliz Navidad”: And here are Daryl Hall & Jose Feliciano with "Feliz Navidad":

Since listenerwants2know doesn't feature picks from the 70s... no 70s pick hit for you! My Top 22 songs from the 12/12/81 countdown:Top 10: Physical, Waiting For A Girl Like You, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Let's Groove*, Young Turks, Harden My Heart, Don't Stop Believin' #11-20: Leather & Lace, Trouble, I Can't Go For That (No Can Do), Turn Your Love Around, Private Eyes, Our Lips Are Sealed#21-30: Cool Night, Heart Like A Wheel, Centerfold, Start Me Up #31-40: Shake It Up, Poor Man's Son, No Reply At All*, Waiting On Friend, She's Got A Way trekkielo would feature Genesis while seminolefan would play the 12" Disco Purrfection version of Earth Wind & Fire. Two more awesome tunes: And now, for the listenerwants2know part of the post... My obscure but way cool song feature of the week... and the album from which this song is from was on the British chart back in December of 1981! The Stranglers were one of Britain's top punk rock bands. The second release from their "La Folie" album made it to #2 in the UK and was a Top 10 hit in Australia. It didn't make a dent in the charts here, yet the video below has been played on YouTube over 27 million times! I heard this song driving home from work this evening on SiriusXM's 1st Wave. It's stuck in my head so I'll make it stuck in your head by featuring it here. You're welcome!
