[...] Since listenerwants2know doesn't feature picks from the 70s... no 70s pick hit for you! [...] And now, for the listenerwants2know part of the post... My obscure but way cool song feature of the week... and the album from which this song is from was on the British chart back in December of 1981! The Stranglers were one of Britain's top punk rock bands. The second release from their "La Folie" album made it to #2 in the UK and was a Top 10 hit in Australia. It didn't make a dent in the charts here, yet the video below has been played on YouTube over 27 million times! I heard this song driving home from work this evening on SiriusXM's 1st Wave. It's stuck in my head so I'll make it stuck in your head by featuring it here. You're welcome! [...] Thanks for the suggestions. Regarding the 70s, I select David Dundas with "Jeans On":
The Stranglers supported the band Chelsea in 1976 at "The Nashville" in London. It was Chelsea´s last appearance with singer Billy Idol, who subsequently split from the band to pursue a solo career. And the Stranglers had a huge radio hit in Austria in 1986: From the album "Dreamtime" - here are the Stranglers with "Always The Sun":

12/12/81:Foreigner - Waiting For A Girl Like YouGeorge Benson - Turn Your Love Around Rod Stewart - Young Turks The Go-Go´s - Our Lips Are Sealed The Rolling Stones - Waiting On A Friend A historic riseFC Salzburg did it: Austria´s football champions won the all-important sixth and final group game of the UEFA Champions League against FC Sevilla 1-0 (0-0) on Wednesday and were the first domestic club to reach the round of 16 in the premier league. Salzburg was the first Austrian club to survive a CL group stage since Sturm Graz, and the Styrians played a second in 2000/01, which ended. Salzburg will find out about their opponents in the round of 16 on Monday and will play for the next promotion in February/March 2022. So, here´s my " celebration"-edition:
12/12/81: Earth, Wind and Fire - Let´s Groove Olivia Newton-John - Physical The Cars - Shake It Up The Rolling Stones - Start Me Up The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra - Hooked On Classics Time for a Christmas extra: Boney M.Frank Farian also produced a #1 Christmas album with his "flagship of the 70s", on which you could find everything from traditional Christmas carols to Christmas songs from other countries to happy pop songs, so that this album was loved by the whole family. In 1979 "Mary´s Boy Child / Oh My Lord" reached #3 in the Austrian charts. And after more than 40 years of abstinence, this song returns to the Austrian charts at #67 this week. from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."
John Miles (1949-2021) Born in 1949 as John Errington, John Miles owed his fame to the rock ballad "Music" from 1976. He fell asleep peacefully with his family on Sunday after a short illness in his hometown of Newcastle, said manager Cliff Cooper of the Orange Electronic Music Company. In a message from his family on Facebook, based on the first line of the song, it said: "You were our first love and will be our last." With the song "Music", John Miles created a musical monument. And although he was unable to build on this success later, he remained loyal to music for the rest of his life. He played in several bands and released a total of eight solo albums. Among the highlights of his career was the role as musical director and lead guitarist in Tina Turner´s band. With Miles, the United Kingdom has lost "one of the country's most talented musicians", Cooper paid tribute to the singer, songwriter, guitarist and keyboardist. For many, John Miles was not just a participating artist at the "Night Of The Proms", he was also a "good friend and the soul of the tour," the statement said. His hit "Music" has become the concert anthem. He will be sorely missed. John Miles leaves behind his wife, to whom he was married for nearly 50 years, as well as two children and two grandchildren. "He will live forever in our hearts and with the wonderful musical legacy he has left," wrote his family.

My Top 24 songs from the 12/15/73 countdown with absolute faves in bold: Top 10: All of 'em! The Most Beautiful Girl, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Top Of The World, Just You 'n' Me, Time In A Bottle, Hello It's Me, Leave Me Alone (Ruby Red Dress), Photograph, The Joker, If You're Ready (Come Go With Me) #11-20: Space Race, Keep On Truckin', Never Never Gonna Give Ya Up, Midnight Train To Georgia, Show & Tell, Living For the City #21-30: Smokin' In The Boys Room, I Got A Name, I've Got To Use My Imagination*, D'yer Mak'er #31-40: Angie, Me & Baby Brother, Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do), Corazon
My Top 14 songs from the 12/20/80 countdown: Top 10: Lady, More Than I Can Say, Masterblaster*, Hungry Heart, Another One Bites The Dust, Hit Me With Your Best Shot #11-20: The Tide Is High, A Woman In Love, De Do Do Do De Da Da Da, Whip It #21-30: I Love A Rainy Night, Hey Nineteen #31-40: Dreamin', 9 To 5
* Gladys Knight & The Pips and Stevie Wonder are my Pick Hits this week. I love how there is minimal snare drum and lots of bass drum in the first part and the ending of "I've Got To Use My Imagination"... the songs builds a strong foundation and florishes to a fantastic finish. Meanwhile, Stevie Wonder breezes through "Masterblaster" and makes some other wind-sound types of noises which adds to the coolness of the tune...

12/20/80:Air Supply - Every Woman In The WorldAndy Gibb - Time To Time Christopher Cross - Never Be The Same Don Williams - I Believe In You Rod Stewart - Passion Two special birthdaysBefore the year 2021 comes to an end, I have a memory of two special birthdays. Lucky Luke saw the light of day on 11/14/1946, when Maurice de Bevere (artist name Morris) published the first 20-page episode "Arizona 1880" in a yearbook of the magazine "Almanach Spirou". Half a year later, the first sequel, "La Mine d´or de Dick Digger" ("The Gold Mine of Dick Digger") was released. Western history such as land seizures, Indian wars or the progress of civilization is treated in a humorous and parodistic manner. Historically documented gun heroes like Billy The Kid, Calamity Jane, Joss Jamon and Jesse James are drawn into a comedy. Odd guys like bounty hunters (with Hollywood star Lee van Cleef´s counterfeit), Russian grand dukes or would-be Napoleons fill the albums as well as the long-term feud with the Dalton brothers, which Lucky Luke has to put back in prison again and again. Not to mention Rantanplan, the dog who is "dumber than his own shadow ...".
A few months ago the " Lucky Luke Dictionary" went on sale. "The first ideas for this were already on our 70th birthday five years ago, but at that time the request came too short. A year ago, we made a new effort and have now collected 1,650 terms, which we explain in the dictionary”, says Volker Hamann. What is special is that there is no such reference work in Belgium or France. And then there is MTV, which premiered on 8/1/1981 with "Video Killed The Radio Star":
From the beginning, music videos by Rod Stewart were included. Whether the music videos for the following songs were often broadcast by MTV, I can´t verify at this point, but they were and still are particularly popular.
12/20/80:
Bruce Springsteen - Hungry Heart Dolly Parton - 9 To 5 Kool & The Gang - Celebration Queen - Another One Bites The Dust The Police - De Do Do Do De Da Da Da Time for a Christmas extra: Chris ReaWe don´t want to imagine a Christmas season without "Driving home for Christmas". This wonderful melancholic song by British singer Chris Rea has been part of the regular repertoire of Christmas hits every year since its release in 1986. In 2008, Chris Rea remembers, he even reached the top 3 of the most popular Christmas songs of all time in a poll in his home country. "I was a bit embarrassed that we landed before Bing Crosby´s White Christmas. Before us there were only The Pogues with "Fairytale in New York" − they deserved it too, because nobody is going to top this song any more.". Chris Rea´s own Christmas song "Driving Home for Christmas" came about by chance when he was working on his 2nd album in December 1979 in London at the very beginning of his career. "My wife was supposed to pick me up at Abbey Road Studios because they were closing a few days before Christmas and I wasn´t allowed to drive a car. As we struggled through London traffic, we saw all these crappy people ... and that was long before I had written "The Road to Hell".". Chris Rea didn´t understand the world anymore. It was Christmas, why was everyone "out there" in such a bad mood ? "I wanted to be really happy, but I remember we had a whole 180 pounds left over for the whole Christmas season. I said to my wife, "We can buy some cheap wine, but how do we get 180 pounds for the whole Christmas season ? And then we went into a snowstorm. When we finally arrived in Middlesbrough at 4 am, it was minus 8 degrees. When we opened the door to our house, the snow blew in and did not melt at all. It felt even colder inside than outside. And there was this letter on the rug. I opened it and in it was my very first royalty check for my first hit single "Fool If You Think It´s Over". This check was worth more than the house we lived in. On that drive I had the idea for "Driving home for Christmas" for the first time and thought, "That sounds kind of good, but it took us about four or five years to really start working on the song. In 1986, I tried out a new sound with pianist Max Middleton and I said to him, "Come on, let´s try to make it sound like Duke Ellington." Then we went into the studio and recorded the song because we needed a good B-side. It was never meant to be a single, even though people always think so." "Driving home for Christmas" became so successful over the next two years that Chris Rea decided in 1988 to release the song as a stand-alone single. Hard to believe, that one of the biggest Christmas hits of all time came out of a chaotic car ride home.
At #4 in the current Austrian charts, here´s Chris Rea with "Driving Home For Christmas":

12/27/86:Billy Joel - This Is The TimeChicago - Will You Still Love Me ? Chico DeBarge - Talk To Me Glass Tiger - Someday Miami Sound Machine - Falling In Love (Uh-Oh) RudiIn June 2021 roebuck Rudi fell into the Almkanal in the city of Salzburg. A jogger finds the roebuck, which was two weeks old at the time, takes him out of the water and takes him to a farm in the Leopoldskron district. Meanwhile Rudi is fit again and is allowed to go back to freedom. After his unplanned fall into the Almkanal, an area was quickly built for him in the Leopoldskroner Moor. Since the beginning of June he has been pepped up with goat milk five times a day. "In the beginning it was quite difficult. I had to teach him the sucking reflex because he hadn´t known drinking from the bottle," said foster mom Christina Wolf. In the meantime, the fawn has become an almost "pubescent" roebuck - he is a bit more rebellious than before. "He´s more on a fight and looking for a bit of an argument," said Franz Wolf. Every day, foster mom Christina Wolf walked the roebuck to feed the deer in the hope that he would spend his future there too. "He followed me and I showed him how to feed the deer." The release into the wild after six months should be a goodbye for a while - because shortly after a trip to freedom, Rudi came back to his foster family.
And here´s my "Christmas Eve"-edition:
12/27/86:Ben E. King - Stand By Me Billy Ocean - Love Is Forever Carly Simon - Coming Around Again Peter Cetera & Amy Grant - The Next Time I Fall Tina Turner - Two PeopleTime for a Christmas extra: Chris de BurghChris de Burgh is at the end of his nerve. His debut album hit stores last year, but the disc is an absolute slacker. Meanwhile, Chris doesn´t have a cent in his pocket and can't even afford to rent his own apartment. Shortly before Christmas he stayed with a friend and was reading a book on the sofa that totally captivated him. "Memories of the Future" by Erich von Däniken is about an extraterrestrial life. Chris is fascinated and lets his imagination run wild. What if the star of Bethlehem was actually an alien spaceship ? And the inmates would have watched us humans to keep an eye on the foolish things we are doing ? Then they would have led all the magicians and sages to the birthplace of Jesus Christ. Chris feverishly writes down his thoughts and speculates as to whether such a world-changing event as the birth of Christ might not also be possible today ? The finished song appears on his album "Spanish Trains And Other Stories", but as a single the fabulous story initially flops. It was only after his mega hit "The Lady In Red" that "A Spaceman Came Travelling" developed into a popular song that was played on the radio every year around Christmas.
From 1975 here´s Chris De Burgh with "A Spaceman Came Travelling":

The original phone-in had the following purpose: In the studio there is a moderator and a (prominent) guest. The listener addresses his questions to the guest by phone. The promotion of the democratization of the medium was viewed positively at the time, while the fact that so many callers could not keep to the limits of what was said was negative. In the fall of 1983, Ö3 launched the first phone-in show "Freizeichen" ("dial tone"). The first signation was the instrumental "Stars" by French composer Jean Claude Petit from 1981 - this year also the last "song" in my private playlist:
