4/23/83: Def Leppard - Photograph Eric Clapton - I´ve Got A Rock N´ Roll Heart Patrick Simmons - So Wrong Prince - Little Red Corvette Toto - I Won´t Hold You BackVienna City MarathonThe 41st Vienna City Marathon left many happy faces. Good weather conditions also contributed to the general mood on Sunday, only the wind was a little too strong. Around 35,000 people took part, with countless people cheering them on along the course. Victory went to the Ethiopian Chala Regasa and the Eritrean Nazret Weldu. The 26-year-old Regasa needed 2:06:35 hours for the marathon. He was one of the favorites going into the race and pulled away from the competition by around the 30th kilometer. Race director Hannes Langer emphasized the presence of the local population along the route, which is one of the reasons why athletes like to come to the capital. "The last two kilometers were absolutely great. I just enjoyed it and tried to give back the atmosphere," said Julia Mayer. Austria´s best athlete completed the last few hundred meters of the 42.195 km with a heart shaped with her hands. A sporting edition to match: 4/23/83: Dexys Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen Duran Duran - Hungry Like The Wolf Frida - I Know There´s Something Going On Greg Kihn Band - Jeopardy Irene Cara - Flashdance ... What A Feeling Time for an extra: IcehouseOne topic that has Australian music fans buzzing is the question of whether Iva Davies is actually sitting on a whole mountain of unreleased songs from the 80s. These mysterious recordings are known there as the " Icehouse Vault". For years, Iva Davies has refused to confirm the existence of these recordings; it was mostly Icehouse members from the 80s who spoke of these recordings and songs. Now, in an interview with the blog Tripple M, Iva Davies has confirmed for the first time that there is an " Icehouse Vault". Icehouse has not released any new records since 1993. Could Iva Davies not fall back on songs from the " Icehouse Vault" ? Iva Davies has recently taken a drastic stance: "These songs come from a very problematic time in my life. Writing them was a form of therapy. I´m now out of therapy and the songs have served their purpose for me. I have discussed this with my lawyer: these songs will not be released as long as I am alive." The release of the " Icehouse Vault" is therefore even less of an issue for him. The band name " Icehouse" is undisputed in Australia: at the beginning of his career, the young Iva Davies lived in a basement apartment on the outskirts of Sydney. At that time, Iva Davies always wore dark make-up, black clothes and let little light into the cool, damp apartment - just dark wave. At the weekend, her circle of friends often met in this apartment: the Icehouse. Here are Icehouse with "Hey Little Girl": from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

While I really like or love 30 songs from the 4/29/78 countdown, these 11 are my absolute faves: With A Little Luck, Lay Down Sally, Dust In The Wind, Jack & Jill, Imaginary Lover*, Feels So Good, Flash Light, Our Love, Love Is Like Oxygen, Fantasy, Ebony Eyes
While I really like or love 21 songs from the 4/25/81 countdown, these 5 are my absolute faves: While You See A Chance, I Can't Stand It, I Love You, I Missed Again, The Party's Over (Hopelessly In Love)*
The Atlanta Rhythm Section and Journey receive This Week's Pick Hits designation. "Imaginary Lover" is hard to categorize as it's not pop, or rock, or a ballad... but it's wonderful musically. Meanwhile, "The Party's Over (Hopelessly In Love)" is a power pop/rock gem. Here you go:

Spring 1981 was a wonderful time for music for me, and several songs from 4/25/81 were its cornerstones: Just the Two of Us, Take It On the Run, Angel of the Morning, Just Between You and Me, Living Inside Myself, Being With You, and if I might be permitted to bend the rules a tad to add the #42 song (which hit the countdown the next week), Find Your Way Back.

A special show for May 1st:
3/27/82 (guest-host: Lee Sherwood):Dan Fogelberg - Leader Of The BandDiana Ross - Mirror, Mirror Dr. Hook - Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk Go-Go´s - We Got The Beat Huey Lewis & The News - Do You Believe In Love New musical for the 1,100th birthdaySaint Wolfgang, the patron saint of Lake Wolfgangsee, would have been 1,100 years old this year. 150 partner communities of the Wolfgangsee region throughout Europe are celebrating this anniversary this year with communities in Salzburg and Upper Austria. The highlight for fans is a musical or "Mystical", which has been specially composed. It will run from 5/23 on a specially built stage floating on Lake Wolfgangsee at the large vacation resort - a traditional summer retreat for young people and children from Vienna. It´s just under a month until the premiere of the musical "Wolf" - written by the Upper Austrian author Franzobl. The title song comes from Opus and the Schick Sisters. They are already grooving their way around the brand new lake stage during rehearsals. The new Mystical is "the Austrian answer to Jesus Christ Superstar, the mythology of Richard Wagner and a touch of Monty Python", according to the website of the regional tourism association. It refers to the birthday of St. Wolfgang (924-2024). Based on the libretto by Franzobel, composer Gerd Hermann Ortler presents "great music theater". The play addresses the big questions of human existence and deals with the life of St. Wolfgang: "It aims to entertain and at the same time promote respect for life, showing the inner conflict between hedonism and contemplation based on Wolfgang´s life story." The production is poetic and humorous and will delight the audience, according to the description. An exciting musical collaboration will take place between the legendary artists of the Opus Band and the enchanting Schick Sisters, who will reinterpret the first "Wolf" song entitled "Kein Heiliger sein / No Saint" together with Franzobel, Viktoria Schubert and Gerd Hermann Ortler. Ortler says: "To immerse the story of St. Wolfgang in my musical language is a great challenge." Ewald Pfleger from the Opus Band also promises: "The composition ´No Saint´ is a catchy tune that will inspire !" And here´s my " great music" edition of the week: 4/25/81 (A): Emmylou Harris - Mister Sandman Eric Clapton & Band - I Can´t Stand It REO Speedwagon - Take It On The RunSheena Easton - Morning Train (Nine To Five) The Who - You Better You Bet 4/23/88 (B):Billy Ocean - Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car George Michael - One More TryMichael Jackson - Man In The Mirror Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind Taylor Dayne - Prove Your Love 3/27/82 (guest-host: Lee Sherwood):Foreigner - Juke Box Hero Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - I Love Rock ´N Roll Kenny Rogers - Through The YearsThe J. Geils Band - Centerfold Vangelis - Chariots Of FireTime for an extra: Barclay James HarvestThis is also how naming a band can work. "We decided to write all the ideas on pieces of paper, fold them up, put them in a hat and then draw them. With each one we said 'No, there´s no way !" and threw the pieces of paper into the fire until there were only three left. We said to ourselves: ´That´s it. We´ll take whatever comes up´," John Lees recalls in an interview. The words Barclay, James and Harvest were written on the pieces of paper. The band was formed in 1966 when Les Holroyd (bass, vocals) and Mel Pritchard (drums), members of a combo called "Heart And Soul And The Wickeds", met John Lees (guitar, vocals) and Stuart "Woolly" Wolstenholme (keyboards, vocals), who were playing with the Sorcerers. They all come from Oldham in the north-west of England and initially play under the name The Blues Keepers. A local businessman takes them on and moves them into a country house in 1967. Here they lived and played together for six months. "I think the change in our music came from living in the middle of the countryside, so far away from everything," Holroyd recalls. It was during this time that the majority of the songs that ended up on the debut album were written. But there is still a long way to go. Wolstenholme´s interest in classical music led to the purchase of a Mellotron, which makes it possible to recreate orchestral sounds. Barclay James Harvest´s music is as unusual as the instrument, but their first single "Early Morning" brought them to the attention of DJ John Peel in 1968. They were signed to a record deal with a newly founded sub-label of EMI, aptly named Harvest. In 1979, Wolstenholme surprisingly decides to leave the band. After the solo album "Maestoso" (1980), he retired to a farm in England, while his former colleagues released "Eyes Of The Universe", their most successful record to date. They reached the peak of their popularity in August 1980 when they played in front of 175,000 people on the steps of the Reichstag in West Berlin ("Berlin - A Concert For The People"). The specially composed "Life Is For Living" became a hit in Europe. from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

"Show Me" is a gem with awesome lead singing by Akron, Ohio's own Chrissy Hynde (I work in Akron), plus some awesome guitars and drums. Meanwhile, "Shakey Ground" isn't quite pop, not quite R & B yet I love the feel of the tune from the Detroit group (I lived in the Detroit area for 17 years). Some very cool musicians honed their craft in the Midwest... C'mon out here and visit sometime! Here you go:

5/5/84:Berlin - No More Words Phil Collins - Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)Real Life - Catch Me I´m Falling Tony Carey - A Fine Fine Day Yes - Leave It Surf Opening 2024The Surf Opening took place this year from 4/30 to 5/5 at Neusiedler Strandbad. With a big opening party on Tuesday evening, guests were offered a lot during the day and at night until Sunday. Sport, lifestyle, family, culinary delights and celebrations, all as part of a single event. There was also enough wind for the wind surfers and wingers. The surf opening organizers are accordingly satisfied. Sports enthusiasts of all ages were able to participate actively and passively in the sports program. First and foremost, there were amateur wind surfing and wing workshops as well as an amateur beach volleyball tournament. The 24-hour sailing regatta of the Austrian Sailing Association also took place at the weekend. A special highlight for all visitors was the “Spray of the day”. Standing on a surfboard, you could be pulled onto the lake by an electric winch and perform a backside turn. Whoever managed the highest spray (splash of water) won a prize. Those who preferred to watch had the opportunity to watch the best beach volleyball players in Austria from Friday to Sunday. The Beach Volleyball Tour PRO, Austria´s highest tournament series, kicked off the season again this year at the Surf Opening, just like last year. In addition to the Austrian stars, top international teams also competed for a total of 14,000 euros in prize money. And here is my " beach"-edition of the week: 5/5/84:Go-Go´s - Head Over Heels Kool & The Gang - Tonight Rick Springfield - Love Somebody Steve Perry - Oh, Sherrie Tracey Ullman - They Don´t Know Time for an extra: Flying PicketsIn 1982, an English miners´ strike hits the headlines. A young, somewhat shrill theater group turns it into a play and calls itself " Flying Pickets". The group toured the country with this miners´ strike play. The boys pass the long car journeys to the performances by singing. They sing whatever comes to mind or what they hear on the car radio, such as oldies or current pop hits. The young men are also getting better and better. Their singing is becoming more and more perfect. And they enjoy it too. So they incorporate a cappella songs into their play. The audience is thrilled by the singing. Even more so than the acting. Eventually, the theater group becomes an a cappella ensemble. At first, the Flying Pickets are only an insider tip, despite having a record deal in the bag. A cappella wasn´t so popular back then. But then the boys hear the song that is to change their lives: "Only You" by the duo Yazoo. The young men take on the song, in true Flying Pickets style, turn it into an a cappella song and conquer the European charts. Perhaps it is because it is just before Christmas that a small vocal ensemble dominates the charts - and not a flashy pop star. A cappella music was experiencing a renaissance, but it only lasted a short time. However, the Flying Pickets failed to score another hit. Nevertheless, the band still exists today. However, none of the founding members are still with them. from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."
