New musical for the 1,100th birthdaySaint Wolfgang, the patron saint of Lake
Wolfgangsee, would have been 1,100 years old this year. 150 partner communities of the
Wolfgangsee region throughout Europe are celebrating this anniversary this year with communities in Salzburg and Upper
Austria. The highlight for fans is a musical or "Mystical", which has been specially composed.
It will run from 5/23 on a specially built stage floating on Lake
Wolfgangsee at the large vacation resort - a traditional summer retreat for young people and children from Vienna. It´s just under a month until the premiere of the musical "Wolf" - written by the Upper
Austrian author Franzobl. The title song comes from Opus and the Schick Sisters. They are already grooving their way around the brand new lake stage during rehearsals.
The new Mystical is "the
Austrian answer to Jesus Christ Superstar, the mythology of Richard Wagner and a touch of Monty Python", according to the website of the regional tourism association. It refers to the birthday of St.
Wolfgang (924-2024). Based on the libretto by Franzobel, composer Gerd Hermann Ortler presents "great music theater".
The play addresses the big questions of human existence and deals with the life of St.
Wolfgang: "It aims to entertain and at the same time promote respect for life, showing the inner conflict between hedonism and contemplation based on
Wolfgang´s life story." The production is poetic and humorous and will delight the audience, according to the description.
An exciting musical collaboration will take place between the legendary artists of the Opus Band and the enchanting Schick Sisters, who will reinterpret the first "Wolf" song entitled "Kein Heiliger sein / No Saint" together with Franzobel, Viktoria Schubert and Gerd Hermann Ortler. Ortler says: "To immerse the story of St.
Wolfgang in my musical language is a great challenge." Ewald Pfleger from the Opus Band also promises: "The composition ´No Saint´ is a catchy tune that will inspire !"

Barclay James HarvestThis is also how naming a band can work. "We decided to write all the ideas on pieces of paper, fold them up, put them in a hat and then draw them. With each one we said 'No, there´s no way !" and threw the pieces of paper into the fire until there were only three left. We said to ourselves: ´That´s it. We´ll take whatever comes up´," John Lees recalls in an interview. The words
Barclay,
James and
Harvest were written on the pieces of paper.
The band was formed in 1966 when Les Holroyd (bass, vocals) and Mel Pritchard (drums), members of a combo called "Heart And Soul And The Wickeds", met John Lees (guitar, vocals) and Stuart "Woolly" Wolstenholme (keyboards, vocals), who were playing with the Sorcerers. They all come from Oldham in the north-west of England and initially play under the name The Blues Keepers.
A local businessman takes them on and moves them into a country house in 1967. Here they lived and played together for six months. "I think the change in our music came from living in the middle of the countryside, so far away from everything," Holroyd recalls. It was during this time that the majority of the songs that ended up on the debut album were written.
But there is still a long way to go. Wolstenholme´s interest in classical music led to the purchase of a Mellotron, which makes it possible to recreate orchestral sounds.
Barclay James Harvest´s music is as unusual as the instrument, but their first single "Early Morning" brought them to the attention of DJ John Peel in 1968. They were signed to a record deal with a newly founded sub-label of EMI, aptly named
Harvest.
In 1979, Wolstenholme surprisingly decides to leave the band. After the solo album "Maestoso" (1980), he retired to a farm in England, while his former colleagues released "Eyes Of The Universe", their most successful record to date. They reached the peak of their popularity in August 1980 when they played in front of 175,000 people on the steps of the Reichstag in West Berlin ("Berlin - A Concert For The People"). The specially composed "Life Is For Living" became a hit in Europe.
