Another great job, Mike, but I am wondering why they are doing all these specials instead of a regular weekly countdown. I would think these specials should be no more than a once in awhile thing--like they were for Casey.

I'd like to point out that I also have a preference for more regular top 40 countdowns for a given week, with not so many lists using "Ranking the 60s" by Dann Isbell.  My main reason is that on too many of these Isbell subsets you are only getting songs that hit the top 10.  I much prefer hearing songs that peaked 15 or lower, as those are the ones I rarely hear.  That is one reason I am looking forward to this week's "Top 40 hits from 1967 by Female Voices" since I see that several songs in the first half of the countdown peaked below #15.  Not a big deal on my comments here, but I would vote for at least 2 regular Top 40 countdowns per month, and preferably weeks that haven't been played in the last 5 years.

Hey Mike,

I think the reason some songs were skipped on the latest special is that there are some restrictions about playing a certain artist too close to each other (applies to on line restrictions). However, the chart could have been manipulated to allow those songs to be played if they wanted.

Anyway, thanks for another list--and maybe one day we will get a regular weekly countdown.

Another female-led song from '67 that was overlooked was "Words Of Love" by the Mamas and Papas.  Although most of their hits were largely group efforts, this song was darn near a Mama Cass solo recording.  

And I think it was ridiculous to include the Little Esther Phillips song, being that nearly all of its chart action was in 1962.

Got the scoop, straight from Lou Simon himself: On Saturday, Dave will count down the top 40 from this week in 1969. Yes, an actual weekly survey! Even Lou says, "I miss them too." Hmmm...

He explains the omission of "Words of Love" from the females special this way:

"We looked for artists that were female-led, rather than songs that were female-voiced. And the Mamas & the Papas were sometimes, but not always, led by a female voice, as evidenced by their first two hit singles ["California Dreamin'" and "Monday, Monday"]. So, they didn't make the cut."

As for Esther Phillips, I made a point of telling Lou that she was a great singer and "Release Me" is a great song, but we didn't get why it was included in a 1967 program. He admitted that it didn't belong, that its being there was an error.

Clearly, from the comments, or the lack thereof, in all of his most recent e-mail responses, Lou is not at liberty to discuss either the Turtles/Shirelles situation or the repetition of artists. I tried, guys!

I just finished listening to the 05/1969 program - I was wondering how they were going to fit the album version of "In-a-Gadda-da-Vida" into a 2 hour show. They didn't even try. I think most of the other Dave Hoeffel hosted shows were under 2 hours, but I timed this one at a little over 2:37. As far as the length of the Iron Butterfly song, when it was released as a single in the fall of 1968, the time Whitburn lists is 2:52 (I was sure it was longer than that, closer to 4 minutes), but I was thinking the album version was about 17 minutes. The one played in this countdown was "only" about 8 minutes long. No big deal, these are just my observations.
