Thanks Doofus for the excellent reason for the advance dates for the countdown! So if a show is played featuring the Shirelles, does payment have to be made for a song played by the group? 1961 was Dedicated to the One I Love, and 1962 would be Soldier Boy. Out this time of the year in 1963 is Foolish Girl, so we will see if we get 1963, and something to really have fun watching--almost like playing detective. Now, since there are no songs by the Shirelles in 1966 we can hope for that year?
As far as the reference to If You Can Wait vs. If You Can Want, on the site Ultimate Music Database the song is listed as If You Can Wait on the 4-13-68 Billboard Chart for that week. Whoever assembles Ultimate Music Database just made a mistake in transcribing this from the original Billboard chart, because I am sure it is correct on the Hot 100 chart in the original Billboard chart of 4-13-68.
Also thanks for listing the Top 40 for this episode.

The Turtles are another act 60s on 6 won't play because of a very similar legal action. They were in the top 40 for many weeks with "You Baby." That'll be dropping out on the 4/23 chart. We were just discussing their case about a week ago in the AT40 On XM thread: www.at40fg.proboards.com/thread/143/at40-on-xm?page=265

I see now why Dave held off on the survey of 1969 until "You Showed Me How" fell off the Hot 100 exactly the week before the featured date of 3-29-69. Let's hope there aren't any more super groups that do the litigation. As stated in previous thread, that is going to be a problem for the Turtles' best year 1967 with back to back hits of "Happy Together," "She'd Rather Be With Me," You Know What I Mean," and "She's My Girl." It will take some tweaking to omit those weeks and even if those were the highest debuts on the Hot 100 without being in the Top 40. One word for this: UGH

Not to complain, but 1960, 1964 and 1968 have been done twice this year, but still no 1961, 1962 or 1966. This year has been front-loaded with '64 shows because, if they were to do one for late March or early April for instance, about one of every four songs would be the Beatles. Radio stations, whether satellite or terrestrial, aren't allowed to play a certain amount of music by the same artist within a certain time period. I believe it has to do with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Just checked the charts. It looks like we'll have to hang in there until the middle of June to catch a countdown for '61 or '62. With '61, we're waiting for "Mama Said" to drop off, and with '62, it's "Soldier Boy."

I totally agree--But It's Alright by J. J Jackson should have done much better on the charts than it did; it's a great song. Maybe the fact that it's first release was on a very small label hurt it's chances--and although it was released on a major label the second time around, many stations probably didn't play it as a 'new' hit.

You see, yesterday after listening to the survey, I looked through my copy of "Ranking The 60's" (yes, I actually own a copy) and I noticed a '60's instrumental that belonged on the countdown that was overlooked. That song is "Because They're Young" by Duane Eddy. It ranks #386 in the book, and on the countdown, it should be positioned between "Java" by Al Hirt and "Wheels" by the String-A-Longs. You might want to call up Lou Simon on his Diner show tonight. (LOL) (I would call, but the show comes on way too late at night for me.)

Good call, slf. Duane Eddy, the greatest rock 'n' roll instrumentalist of the early days, belongs at #23 on this Survey. I have just alerted Lou Simon by e-mail. The first two times I did this, he responded fairly quickly for a man who's juggling so many balls as a VP of programming for SiriusXM. He does sincerely appreciate these corrections, whether it's the Survey or The Diner. As for the latter, I won't be listening live tonight; it's my wife's birthday, and that means quality time, not music nerd time.

Just got my e-mail response from Lou Simon. He told me a little white lie -- next time they run an instrumental show, they will be sure to include "Because They're Young." And there ya have it...
