This one got me thinking. Wang Chung's "To Live And Die In L.A." peaked at #30 on R&R but missed the Top 40 on Billboard, peaking at #41. Was that the highest-charting R&R hit that did not hit the Billboard Top 40 (pre-Soundscan and non-airplay-only, of course)? I know Dionne Warwick got #17 with "Take The Short Way Home" on R&R, which missed the top 40 on Billboard. Not sure if that's the record or not.

One other song, in early 1983, hit the Top 20 on the R&R charts (#20), but just barely missed the Top 40. The record, as far as peak differences go, I think, was in late 1982. "I Gotta Try" by Michael McDonald peaked at #17, but only got as high as #44 on the Billboard chart.

I recall "All Those Lies" by Glenn Frey also made top 20 R&R but not Billboard top 40.

Dukedeb, one angle you might be missing regarding multiple remixes on the same song is that the additional mixes ALSO helped a song chart higher on R&R sometimes. Stations were serviced with rap-less edits, rock mixes, extended mixes, etc....all in attempts to either extend the chart life of a song to have it continue play or to remove programmer objections as to why the song should be played and more importantly "reported".

I recall "All Those Lies" by Glenn Frey also made top 20 R&R but not Billboard top 40. That's the song that I was referring to in my last post (not sure why I forgot to include the title, lol!)

Rick James had five top 40 hits on Billboard; none of them (not even "You And I" (#13 BB) or "Super Freak (#16 BB) charted on R&R.

Snap's "The Power": #2 BB, #11 R&R So did En Vogue's "Hold On", if I remember correctly. It definitely rose to #2 on BB, and only as high as #11 on R&R. Like "The Power", the song must have done a lot better in sales than with radio airplay, it seems.

Another big Billboard hit that did not chart on R&R:
"It's My Turn" by Diana Ross (#9 BB)

^ That's an eye-opener. A big hit by a name artist in a genre that was played a lot by radio stations at the time. In fact, I would have guessed that it would have charted even higher on R&R.

Another big Billboard hit that did not chart on R&R: "It's My Turn" by Diana Ross (#9 BB) That blows my mind as well. Unless "Upside Down" and "I'm Coming Out" just saturated the market that "It's My Turn" didn't get the rotation it deserved. Those of you that listened to radio back in late '80/early '81..."It's My Turn" was played, right?

Another similar case of a big name artist with a radio-friendly song here that surprises me:
Eric Clapton - Wonderful Tonight (BB #16; RR DNC)

Those of you that listened to radio back in late '80/early '81..."It's My Turn" was played, right? I was indeed listening to Top 40 radio in 80/81, and I can tell you that in my local market "It's My Turn" received some, but not a huge amount, of airplay. What's funny is that at that time my local market had two Top 40 stations, one AM and one FM. Both played "Upside Down", and I'm pretty sure both played "It's My Turn", but one of them, the AM one, would not touch "I'm Coming Out." All I can guess is that their program director must've thought it to be just a little too...you know! ;D
