'80s affiliate WSRS (Worcester, MA), which is local to me, apparently flipped to Christmas some time in the past week. Last week they ran the regular 1980 countdown in the normal Sunday 8:00 am - 12:00 noon timeslot, but I had them on my car radio just before 11:00 yesterday and they were finishing up what I think was the 1973 AT40 Christmas special. After it ended they seemed to be playing nonstop Christmas music. Living in Worcester myself, WSRS did switch to all Christmas last week. I was tuned in at 8am Sunday, and yes, it was the 1973 Christmas special. Not sure what that means for the next 6 Sundays...but I'm guessing no Casey.

WWSW 3WS Pittsburgh flipped this morning. And WMJI Cleveland is teasing that the elves are "putting the finishing touches on the holiday playlist" and it will start "shortly" - So whether that is later today or even at the end of the week we have lost two 9-Noon Sunday morning stations for the 70s
As for WMXY/WBBG I actually do wish that as WBBG goes more 70s/80s that they would just run both shows, as it is now on the Sunday mornings the two shows both start at 8 and essentially have to compete with themselves in the same market

How did those countdowns wind up on different stations?

WBBG was one of the original affiliates of the 70s show when it debuted, and they have consistently kept it on the air the entire run.
When the show debuted they were still a true "oldies" station, only recently meandering over to the classic hits format of 70s and 80s pop to align with nearly all classic hits stations around the country.
Meanwhile, sister station WMXY has always been a typical Clear Channel "Mix" 80s 90s and now station with a heavy focus on the 80s. They have done all 80s weekends since they launched well over a decade ago. In 2011, they added the 80s show. It did make sense for both stations, I just never understood why they both run at the same time. When WMXY first started the show it aired on Sunday evenings which made sense. But then they quickly moved it and Casey has been competing with himself in Youngstown every Sunday morning ever since

Thanksgiving is coming up on Thursday, and I am thankful that our local 1970s AT40 station hasn't switched to Christmas songs yet. Four years ago, another station in our area was carrying the '80s shows but flipped to weekends as early as Nov. 6-7! I was not a happy camper for those two months--that was before I realized that I could find the show online. Even though WINR doesn't have the first hour for the late 1978-79 shows, three quarters of a loaf is better than none at all!

I don't understand why they have to preempt a show just to play Christmas music...play the freaking Christmas music after the show. V100 preemepted Backtrax USA for Christmas music. Bastards.

I get it - you promote yourselves as an area's Christmas station, you've got listeners you may not necessarily have the rest of the year and you don't want the mixed mssage of "almost always Christmas"

At least they waited until after last week's 4 hour show. Assuming they only play Christmas countdowns, if that, then we may have to rely on KOKZ or possibly WRQN if we get 1979 in December. Any others?

WEBE preempted Backtrax USA for the 2014 American Music Awards radio show. I actually don't mind as the AMA's are only once a year, I have to wait until Dec 26 to get my show back. Pisses me off .
