All of the above hit the Top Five on R&R, but missed the Top Ten on the Hot 100. "Only Time Will Tell" got as high as #5 in September, 1982. "It's Raining Again" hit #2, edged out of #1 by "Maneater". Finally, "Gypsy" not only hit the Top Five but managed to hit #1 for a week. I found it amazing that, despite this, it ran out of steam at #12 on the Hot 100. We are all so focused on manipulations on Billboard's part. In what universe was Supertramp's "It's Raining Again" a #2 hit? Even with airplay only, that seems a S-T-R-E-T-C-H. I doubt Fleetwood Mac was selling a ton of singles in the early '80s after Rumors and Tusk LPs, so the airplay/R&R chart difference makes sense to me at least. "It's Raining Again" was also #2 in Gavin Magazine (then called Gavin Report), so it apparently did have quite a lot of airplay, but wasn't a big seller (as most Supertramp fans were apparently buying the ...Famous Last Words LP). Also, coming into play was, again, the star/superstar rule, which caused songs to spend multiple weeks at the peak positions. As bobbo428 mentioned, if not for this, many of the songs that peaked in the teens would have hit the Top Ten. "It's Raining Again" certainly would have made it, as it peaked at #11 for a month.

Eurythmatics made a bold unbulleted move 40-47 on 11/4/89 with Don't Ask Me Why, leaving Soulsister holding unbulleted at 41-41. The following week, The Way To Your Heart was still without a bullet @ #41, while Dave and Annie fell back to #48.

Regarding "It's Raining Again", "Gypsy", and "Only Time Will Tell", their BB peaks were closer to their Cashbox peaks. Probably due to BB & CB including sales while R&R was only airplay.
It's Raining Again: BB peak: #11; CB peak: #7 Gypsy: BB peal: #12; CB peak: #13 Only Time Will Tell: BB peak: #17; CB peak: #16

The following week, The Way To Your Heart was still without a bullet @ #41, while Dave and Annie fell back to #48. As a huge fan of the Soulsister song, I've often cited this as one of the most unfair chart movements ever. Both songs would then plunge off the charts together within a few weeks. If I could rewrite history, the Eurythmics song would have been #45 that week.

I have been recording The Rewind Countdown during this past year , based on charts using Record World and Radio & Records, and saw two different songs that dropped from near the Top 10 and fell completely out of the Top 40. Imagine if AT40 had used the Record World charts, for the week end of March 11, 1972 ; Led Zeppelin fans would've been waiting to hear Black Dog , which fell from #10 to #45. The other example is from March 3, 1973--Why Can't we Live Together by Timmy Thomas went from #11 to #53. One more interesting note: the #1 record in Record World on March 8, 1969 was You Showed Me by the Turtles--the following week the song tumbled to #20.

It's safe to say Record World wasn't the most realistic chart.

We all know that ol' Bogus Bill Wardlow was relieved of his duties as chart director of Billboard following the issue dated 4/23/83. Had he been allowed to play out the string and stay on through the last chart date of the month, here's how I think he would have hand-positioned the top 40 of the Hot 100 for that week. The official AT40 list is side-by-side with my tweak. * "Star" ** "Superstar" Bill's

1) What took them so long? 2) Didn't they know what he was doing? 1) We may never know. 2) We may never know. Just like "How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?" "The world may never know..."

Good article, LVK. Thanks for sharing it. Looking at the week-to-week chart action of "Love You Inside Out," one need not be a rocket scientist to realize that something was up. Date | BB | CB | RW | R&R | RT70s | April 21, 1979 | 37 | 39 | 34 | 26 | -- | April 28 | 23 | 25 | 29 | 25 | -- | May 5 | 17 | 15 | 22 | 13 | -- | May 12 | 11 | 11 | 16 | 5 | -- | May 19 | 6 | 8 | 11 | 3^ | -- | May 26 | 4 | 6 | 6 | 3^ | -- | June 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 3^ | -- | June 9 | 1^ | 2^ | 4^ | 6 | -- | June 16 | 5 | 2^ | 4^ | 12 | -- | June 23 | 11 | 16 | 16 | 21 | -- | June 30 | 11 | 30 | 23 | -- | -- | July 7 | 12 | 42 | 27 | -- | -- | July 14 | 29 | 45 | 35 | -- | -- | July 21 | 47 | 68 | 43 | -- | -- | July 28 | 66 | -- | 56 | -- | -- | August 4 | 98 | -- | -- | -- | -- | Year-end | 33 | 51 | -- | -- | 38 |
Only 11 weeks in Cash Box's top 40!

Great article about buying music in Atlanta during the 1970's--since I was a teen doing just that, at the time--bringing back many great memories and fascinating insights as to how the music business worked at the time. I recall mostly buying discs 45's/LP's) from Turtles, near my house, but about once every 6 months going into the Peaches Atlanta store and being overwhelmed by how much more product they carried. In addition, they left the three main trades out (BB/CB/RW) so I could get their addresses and try to get a complimentary issue saying I was going into the business and was thinking of subscribing. Both Billboard and Record World sent me an issue from the same week (May 5, 1979) and I studied them like crazy--comparing their pop singles listings. Sort of ironic, that nearly 40 years later I would decide to host a countdown based on Cash Box magazine, since they were the only ones to not send me my 'free' copy. Although, I chose CB since their charts were available for free on the internet--and not for any real love for the quality of their charts. Joe Cash Box Countdown

If you mean 'when did Cashbox cease publication?'. their final issue was dated November 16, 1996.

If you mean 'when did Cashbox cease publication?'. their final issue was dated November 16, 1996. He probably means when did their quality hit such a turning point that it sent them into death spiral, therefore leading them to cease publication in 1996.
