Even though 1983 was played out of order earlier this year, it is now the next likely show on 7-16-21. If this comes about, then all ten different years will have been played in the last ten weeks. 1987 would follow if the pattern continues.
Since there haven't been any specials since the very beginning of 2021, possibly Labor Day?

7/16 was last featured in 2018. At this rate 3 years later is better than 1 or 2 like the past few weeks. Let's just say this week has been a happy break from the recent reruns.

Given what I said above (any of the likely choices had all aired within the past 5 years), next week was shaping up to be a very skippable week.
This just cements that perspective.
Incidentally: When 7/16/83 was done in 2018, that was also a near-duplicate of Premiere - they did 7/9 that same week/weekend.

Then it will potentially get worse. 1987 now has the longest gap between airings and if they're going to be doing what I think they're going to be doing for the very last weekend of the month with MTV's 40th anniversary and doing 1981 then, we'll end up with yet another repeat of last year, 7/25/87.

Exactly. So yet again the entire month of August 1987 gets the shaft. Since they were willing to play the last two 1982 charts so close together, my fantasy situation has them throwing in an extra 1989 chart this month, but we know that's not gonna happen. Any chance to repeat 1987-1989 charts to death and they're all over it.

At least for 1989's case, it looks like they'll thankfully avoid 8/19 and will more than likely do either 8/26 or 9/2, which are either new or hadn't been done in a while.

In reviewing the years played so far this year--there is an unbalance of years featured. 1983 is coming up on its fourth play for 2021, while 1981, 1984 and 1987 have only been played twice this year. After 1983, I am certain those three years: 81, 84 and 87 will be played to catch up the rotation--likely 87 first followed by 81 and then 84.

Yeah I don't get why they threw in that third airing in May but who am I to question them. As for the years, that looks like the likely order (7/25/87, 8/1/81, and 8/4/84), because I don't see them doing 84 after 83.

Still hoping for some kind of tribute to the 40th Anniversary of MTV on the 7-30-21 show. I remember the Saturday (8-1-81) the show debuted--lots of Journey and Foreigner in the early days! MTV has a Classics Channel, and hoping they will do something on there.

Something else I noticed -- even though we got a new chart this week, which is always appreciated, if we look ahead to ten weeks from now, the next 1986 show should be the 9/20 chart. As usual, this chart would be a repeat even though any of the three weeks before it would be new.

Welp.
At least that means they will go with 1981 the weekend of MTV's 40th after all. Barring anything out the blue of course.

And at least they apparently are not re-running July 11 or 18, 1981; one or both of these are in SXM 8's overplayed file. Hopefully with 1987 next week and probably 1981 shortly thereafter we don't get September 12, 1987 or September 19, 1981 which have also been done to death--three straight years for both IIRC, and maybe more. (Neither year would really then be "due" until late September or October.)

While we did get 7/25/87 last year as well, I recall they then waited 12 weeks to play 1987 again, which could be a good thing if they only wait the standard 10 weeks this time around.

Yeah I remember that. Nice to see that October 1987 has been getting at least some attention over the past couple years. Wish I could say the same for August. Being a DWTS fan, I had to chuckle at Alan's comments about it before playing "I'm Still Standing" (for context, Bruno, one of the judges, was in the video). Coincidentally, one of the professional dancers on the show is also named Alan.
