Next week it'll be all about...you guessed it, 1981. When was the last time we had an older repeat as opposed to a more recent one, because wasn't this last done in 2013? Plus this would of course fit right in with the 40th anniversary of MTV.

8-6-21 should be 1984, and that would feature each year 3 times this year. Only exception is 1983 which had its fourth show last weekend.

Plus this would of course fit right in with the 40th anniversary of MTV. Naw...really? To answer the question, it was last done in 2014. And there may be two silver linings here: The next 10-week jump for 1981 would land on 10/10, which hasn't yet been done. If jgve1952 is correct and 1984 comes next, neither has 8/4/84.

That seems the most likely to happen. We do need a change in the monotony and have either new charts or previously used ones that haven't seen the light of day in years. Did I mention that next week will fall on the 40th anniversary of MTV?

Speaking of monotony, though, we're supposed to get 8/4/84 from Casey as well, though not in the same week (that will air when SXM does 1981).
1988 is also about due from SXM--mid-August maybe? 1982 and 1989 would also hit the 10 week mark in August; in the case of 1989 10 weeks would put us at 8/26/89, which comes one week after one of their most over-replayed charts.

The "on demand" page for this week's countdown is playing a 1986 show from April. There's something I haven't seen before.
I'd stake money on 8/13/88 coming up in a few weeks. They just love repeating 1988 charts to death. After throwing us a bone with a bunch of new charts last year, now we get to hear them all again. Maybe next year we can hear them all a third time!
Meanwhile, over on the 90s on 9, their countdown, now in it's tenth year, has managed to once again avoid the entire month of July 1996. That month has not been played once ever. But of course, two of the charts we did hear in July 2021 were repeats from within the past three years.

On the bright side, at least it looks like 1989 won't be a repeat that has been beaten to the ground. Though yes it does look like we'll once again be getting a 2020 repeat of 1988, unless for some reason they switch years around and we get either the 6th or the 20th (the 6th has also been used I'm sure but not from the past couple years). I wonder how long the 90s will wait to do 1990 again. They seem to love waiting a good four months between features as of late.

The countdown is indeed 8-1-81.

Next week is 1984, likely August 4, the same chart we get from Casey this week, though at least not at the same time.

Speaking of Martha, they will have this reunion special on Sunday with them along with Martha Quinn. I'm guessing her working for iHeart now prevents her from even making a guest appearance on the Big 40?

Interesting that this week is 8-1-81 and next week is 8-4-84. I don't think there are any other doubles like that in any other years of the 80's. 8-2-82 was a Monday, 8-3-83 was a Wednesday, 8-5-85 was a Monday, 8-6-86 was a Wednesday, 8-7-87, a Friday, 8-8-88, a Monday, and 8-9-89, a Wednesday. Thinking I have too much time on my hands!
Laura, did you hear what time the special will be?

This is what it looks like: MTV 40th Anniversary VJ Reunion Sun 11 am 3 pm 10 pm Mon 7 pm
All times are central, so the first airing will be 11 AM on Sunday. Looks like it will preempt one of the usual countdown airings.

Thinking I have too much time on my hands! Laura, did you hear what time the special will be? There aren’t any years like that in the 70s that had an AT40 chart or countdown. The one Saturday in that decade when it happened, 7-5-75, AT40’s debut show from 1970 was rebroadcast to listeners who were mostly hearing it for the first time. And the 90s had no Saturdays at all that fit that pattern and so no AT40s and/or CT40s thus dated.

The 60s, had there been any existing countdown, would have had three: 6/2/62, 6/5/65, 6/8/68. Though, it's still relevant insomuch as Billboard and Cash Box charts from that decade.
For the latter, in the 50s, there was only one: 5/9/59. In the 40s, two more: 4/7/47 and 4/9/49. (This warrants explaining - Cash Box didn't exist until late 1944, and until late 1947, their issue dates were Mondays, which explains 1947. That's the only such Monday in the decade, whereas for Saturdays, two additionals would be 4/3/43 and 4/6/46.)
