No need listening to Casey lite tonight; it is a poor duplication of this week's Premiere program! Well, they did at least play the longer version of "The Safety Dance" that Casey never played (that spells out the word "S-A-F-E-T-Y".) But it is the same chart--Billboard from July 30, 1983--so after a few songs I turned it off and decided to listen to Casey later. Interestingly, the first song SXM 8 played after the countdown ended was Culture Club's "Time", which fell off the Billboard top 40 that very week.

Who the hell does their research for these shows? They get SO many things wrong. On this week's show Alan Hunter was intro-ing Stevie Nicks' "Stand Back" and mentioned her being on tour now with Rod Stewart and her latest album, "Dream A Little". The problem is her 1985 album was called "Rock A Little", her current album is called "In Your Dreams"!!!! I realize the VJ's are not on top of current events, so they REALLY need a dependable research team.

Next week's Casey lite? Don't think they said? Can we hope that this was the last of the how not to do a countdown show and that Casey or at least Rick will be back or is that wishful thinking on my part.

I think so. Martha said they would be doing it again next week, just did not mention the year.

Any bets that they'll do the same countdown date that Premiere's doing this weekend (8/11/1984)?

I wonder if they ever played the same year during the same week as Premiere for both that and Casey's 70s AT40? The VJ's last did 1984 in mid-June (eight weeks ago.) It's been longer since they flashed back to 1981 or 1986, so they may do one of those instead.

Next weekend's Premiere show is also 1982.

It's funny that you keep running into repeats with the 80s shows. In the 70s, they have not done the same show in over a year now, even with the alternate shows from Premiere figured in.

I think SXM airing the same week as Premiere is deliberate. I think it's done because they feel you'll hear the same songs so there's no difference. But there is a difference, one is there's no Casey, two is the "facts" are consistently wrong, three is you don't always get hit or single version of the song (they often play later live or remixed versions) and four it's not always about the songs. I listen every week to the VJ countdown because I like it but it does have some flaws and drawbacks.

I listen to the show for the same reason.

At least that wasn't done this week; this week they actually gave us something Premiere hasn't so far (the top 40 from 1989, including many songs that are little heard or remembered today.) SXM's corresponding 90s top 30 countdown featured the Billboard chart from 9/1/1990, so that's two countdowns in the same weekend from back to back years using charts that were originally counted down by Shadoe Stevens on AT40. The 90s countdown was guest hosted by Matt and Gunnar Nelson, who once filled in for Shadoe (January 12, 1991).

Next week's not AT40; 1985 Which probably means the Billboard chart from September 14, 1985, which we've heard from Premiere, of course minus its most notorious part (that which under Casey came right after #13.)

Stellar research once again, Alan Hunter just intro'd Sheila E's "Glamourous Life" and said that Sheila "sang back up on Prince's "Erotic City" album....". "Erotic City" was a b-side (to Let's Go Crazy) not an album. I just find it so amazing that the VJs really don't know their MTV music history at all, you'd think when they got the script they'd look at it and say "That's not right...." maybe they do and they catch more than they miss, but it's amazing that the countdown has some really bad fact checkers. Maybe they aren't going to let their countdown be bogged down with fact checking?

Maybe they aren't going to let their countdown be bogged down with fact checking? This week's errata include Alan stating that "I'm Goin' Down" was the last of 7 top ten hits from Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" album; in fact it was #6, with "My Hometown" still to follow; and that John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band's "Tough All Over" album had two hits, namely "C-I-T-Y" (in the countdown) and "Voice of America's Sons"; in fact, "Voice" was not a top 40 hit but the album's title track was. Later Mark got in on the fun as well, stating that "Smokin' In the Boys Room" was originally by Black Oak Arkansas when it was in fact Brownsville Station. As Casey said that week, that's ponderous, man. One interesting bit of trivia was Martha's statement that Pat Benatar thinks "The Legend of Billie Jean", from which her hit "Invincible" came, is one of the worst movies ever. I'll assume that to be true.
