I predict that one of the announcers will take a shot at Sheena Easton's song. Probably "You don't want to have that song in your head all day". Their dj's just does not care for her music when Easton was in her "Marie Osmond phase".

The reason for them not loving Sheena Easton's early stuff is because coming from MTV they are very much pro MTV era artists/songs. Sheena Easton at that point would not have been seen on MTV. She was too AC at that point. But then in 1980/81 there were a lot of AC artists on the charts, and they are of the same mind of them as well.

The Don McLean song sounded like the same version played on AT40 last week to me...

No one would have been seen on MTV at that point as it didn't debut until August 1. Sheena Easton's early hits, I think, fit in well with the upbeat tone of early 80s hits that were played on MTV (plus her James Bond theme adds an extra touch of class), but MTV at that time saw itself more as an AOR/new wave station and so may have seen her as too AC/pop at first (this changed with later hits like "Telefone" and "Strut".) And I also hope Premiere doesn't play the same week as SXM 8 next week, in this case 1984; there are five other playable years we haven't heard since Premiere last did 1984.

That's exactly what I was saying. But even with Telefone and Strut Sheena wasn't played on MTV and if she was it was very little. She didn't get major MTV AirPlay until she switched to dance music. Sugar Walls may have gotten played on MTV but she was played for more often on VH1 than MTV.

It didn't even occur to me until you said this, but yeah, I guess Premiere could be syndicating one year to SXM and a different one to terrerestrial radio to ameliorate the competition, there, couldn't they? Do they generally?

Do they generally? Premiere doesn't produce this countdown, so no. It's just an annoying coincidence. At least it won't happen this week (1983) or next week, since it'll be 1989 from SXM. Incidentally, most likely the Big 40 will be from Billboard's 6/24/89 chart, so we probably wouldn 't hear that from Premiere even if they played Shadoe countdowns, as Debbie Gibson guest hosted AT40 that week.

That could be the year we hear next weekend on AT40.

While the 80s station does 1989, 90s on 9 plays the top 30 from this week in 1991. Thus, we get most of two charts that were originally Shadoe-hosted AT40s.

Just realized that this weeks chart had Stevie Nicks, Stevie Wonder and Steve Miller.

OMG, I think I just heard Casey lite say Rose was Butte Midler's highest charter of the 80s (#3). But she was coming off a #1 during 1989s show just a couple weeks ago and I think they even told the story about how her version of Wind outcharted many others! This is what I don't get, I understand that they are just reading what is written for them, but don't they read it and go "wait, that doesn't make sense". It seems that many DJs don't really know much music history. I always wanted to become a DJ because I have so much music knowledge, growing up I always thought the DJs just knew all this stuff. I found out years ago that many know very little, they just read a script.

I'd wonder if they're really DJs or just purely script-readers, the idea being that there's a difference between the two, and that a script-reader is nothing more than a body reading from a piece of paper.

That could be next week's Premiere show year as well.

That could be next week's Premiere show year as well. At least we got July 1987 this week, which Premiere has yet to do. (And this particular list of songs will never be played by them as it was from 7/18/87, when AT40 was guest hosted.) Incidentally, the similar 90s countdown run by SXM 9 features the Billboard chart of July 21, 1990, which of course was the basis of a Shadoe AT40.

Thankfully they decided to use the Billboard chart for July 18, 1987 because one of the most sampled hits in hip hop spent only one week in the top 40. That record is the follow-up to "Lean On Me" titled "Why You Treat Me So Bad". This is supposed be fun and games. Well here's a bit of trivia for ya! These are the following songs that banked or had a much successful run on the charts using this R&B top ten smash, sorry if I missed any.
Luniz "I Got 5 on It"- (#8) - 1995
Puff Daddy "Satisfy You" - (#2)- 1999
Jessica Simpson - "Irresistible" - (#15) - 2001 (the So So Def Remix with Lil Bow Wow also got airplay and it's on the B side of this single)
