Catching the year-end show now on iHeart, at #12. Can't stay up to listen though, as 4:30 comes early.

I'm gonna go ahead and predict that the #1 song of 2020 is "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd. It has been in the top 10 since 3/21. If it wasn't for that long run, I'd pick Post Malone's "Circles", which had a lengthy top 10 run as well, including three separate stints at #1, not done on AT40 since Chic's "Le Freak" back in early 1979. And you're right. "Blinding Lights" and "Circles" were #1 and #2 for 2020. The 2020 year end countdown was marked by one major historic AT40 inaccuracy. Ryan stated that Dick Clark was the first ever AT40 guest host, when in fact it was Dave Hull, several months earlier. Dick Clark's intro into his 3/25/72 guest hosted show was played, and was followed by Ryan plugging "New Year's Rockin' Eve", which Clark started and Seacrest keeps up yearly. That led into an AT40 Rewind extra of Miley Cyrus' "Party In the USA". That clip of Dick Clark features a mistake by Dick. He said that Isaac Hayes hit #1 in December with his single and album. Except that the "Theme from Shaft" and the soundtrack both hit the top in November (1971).

Gonna try to predict the #1 song of 2021, like I did with 2020. I'll go with "Positions" by Ariana Grande. The year-end will begin this weekend.

No it’s not the top song of the year. Try again. On the I-Heart channel, Hour 2 segment 2 is missing. Hopefully they fix it.

My other guess would be "Levitating". I won't be able to listen until tomorrow night at the earliest.

Great guess. Keep listening to find out. Great year ending show, even though once again it’s only the top 40. That’s all we’re ever going to get from AT40.

And it seems like the top 100s are a thing of the past. With slower chart movements and all, there'd be a lot of repeat songs, even higher up in both surveys. Even ACC/CT40 has only gone with a year-end top 50 every year since 2000 (well, 1999, although that's obvious since there's decade-end specials at that time also). If iHeart doesn't fix the missing segment, no worries, it'll air again next weekend, albeit with different voice tracks and possibly extras.

Dammit! KMEL-HD2's constant AT40 feed (at least yesterday) missed airing #27-24! I hope they correct it before Friday
EDIT: They're still missing it today

statenislandfan noted the missing segment above. Hoping it gets fixed, too, but if it doesn't, I won't be too upset since the year-end will air next weekend also, though with different voice tracks and maybe extras.

Well, I wrote KMEL calling attention to it. We'll see what happens. Thanks for contacting them. Hopefully somebody will take care of it. I happened to record the stream a couple of nights ago; I noticed a long period of "dead air" at the end of their set, likely because H2S2 didn't air for however many times during the 24-hour period. ETA: Here is the list of AT40's top 40 pop hits of 2021. Since we can't hear songs 27-24 right now, in case you're curious what they are (I know I was), this will tell you.

It isn't often that a song makes two year-end surveys on the same chart run (being it's only a top 40 since 2010), and there's even a song that had the very same ranking for 2020 as it does for 2021. "I Hope" by Gabby Barrett feat. Charlie Puth ranked at #30 on both the 2020 and 2021 year-end top 40. The #1 song of 2020 ranks at #16 for 2021 also, that being "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd.
Back in the top 100 era, there was a song that had the same ranking on two consecutive year-end charts: "Bright Lights" by Matchbox Twenty ranked at #94 for both 2003 and 2004, which bridged the Casey and Ryan eras.

Well, the bigger reason for that is because of the different charts used. I'm not sure if AT40 knew BB was going to start counting full chart runs when they were compiling the 1984 year-end, but sometime during 1985 they decided to use BB. As a new and young listener then, I didn't quite understand how the charts were compiled and such. While I liked how AT40 calculated the year-end rankings (and I largely preferred them to BB), I wasn't crazy about estimating future chart positions and points. It gives some songs an unfair advantage. As for counting full runs, not a fan of that either. But that's for another thread.
