From my email...
"Premiere Radio Networks wants to advise you that as of the weekend of July 4/5, 2009, Casey and Premiere will cease producing AMERICAN TOP 10 and AMERICAN TOP 20."
Anybody know the story behind this?

Anybody know the story behind this? Sadly, this day has come. I just double checked your lead with All Access and it was posted near the top of the page. Here is the info courtesy of All Access... "Kasem's American Top 10 and Top 20 To End On July 4th Holiday Downsizing The Countdowns PREMIERE RADIO NETWORKS has announced that it will cease producing AMERICAN TOP 10 and AMERICAN TOP 20.with CASEY KASEM as of the weekend of JULY 4th-5th. CASEY KASEM's AMERICAN TOP 40 - 'The 70s and CASEY KASEM's AMERICAN TOP 40 - The '80s will continue to be distributed and broadcast by PREMIERE RADIO on more than 200 radio stations around the world. " What a crummy week for many of us-Radio and Records and Casey Kasem announce a cease in operations within a day of each other. What other shows will AC/Hot AC fans move toward, Rick Dees, Ryan Seacreast, Chris Leary, etc?

I guess Casey decided to hang it up as a countdown host because of Today's music is not as good as the music of the 70's, 80s, and 90s.

I'm just really surprised this didn't wait one more year until the 40th anniversary of AT40 unless they couldn't agree to contract extension terms and it's up for renewal, or Casey is ill, etc.

WOW!
Well so much for a decent end of the decade countdown. I was looking forward to Casey doing a Top30 of the decade so I could re-edit it into an unoficial AT40 w/ Casey, Top 40 of the decade. This will make that task soooo much harder. But I'll probably still attempt it at least.
Economy strikes again?

We will miss ya Casey. Thank God for the rebroadcasts and the gathering of great collectors on the message board.

What are the chances that another distributor picking up the show(s)? If not, would Casey ever consider doing an internet/podcast countdown? Better yet, Billboard should bring back the weekly "Billboard Radio Countdown" and have Casey as the host!

What other shows will AC/Hot AC fans move toward, Rick Dees, Ryan Seacreast, Chris Leary, etc? Let's not forget Randy Jackson. His Hit List program tends to get rid of recurrents faster than Seacrest and besides, it's three hours like AT20, so that would IMO be an ideal replacement (Dees and Seacrest are four hours and Chris Leary's Fox All Access is two hours long). As for AC, I have no idea, since as far as I know, AT10 is the only show for that format. I knew Casey was getting up there in years and couldn't go on doing new shows forever, but I kinda figured Mike Kasem would take over. Guess not. I agree with shadster about the decade end countdowns. Why couldn't they have waited until the end of the year. Unless the decade-end countdown will be the final show, but that would eliminate most 2009 songs. Still, it would be better than nothing, but I wouldn't get my hopes up. At least AT40: The 70s and 80s is still alive and well - unless they decide to pull the plug on that as well. They say bad things happen in threes. Could that possibly be #3? I sure hope not! (actually, AT10/AT20 would be #3 if you counted Best Week Ever Radio ceasing production as of the beginning of this year)

Well, we knew this day had to come sooner or later. It just sucks that Casey couldn't go out on his own terms.

Wow. Just wow. I'm stunned.
As Mark said, we all knew this day would come sooner or later. I guess I just didn't expect it yet.

I think its weird that the both shows will end on the week that AT40 premiered.

I think it's fitting. If the decision has been made to end the shows, why NOT do it on the anniversary weekend when it's just a few weeks away?

Sadly, we knew this day would come... An era is coming to an end - The Legend goes off air! Luckily, he is leaving behind almost half a chart century for us to enjoy, and thanks for that!

I've heard rumors back in December 2008, Casey was going to retire sometime after the 1st quarter of 2009 and his son Mike was going to take over. I believe the weekday feature 'American Top Hits with Casey Kasem' ended in December 2008.
It appears those rumors back then were somewhat true. Unfortunately, AT20/AT10 will come to an end. My Sunday nights won't be the same. However, I will be listening to past Casey Kasem's shows from the past four decades.
I will have to find a new countdown show to listen to the current hit music now.
Thank you Casey Kasem and staffers for 39 great years of great countdown radio!
