I didn't listen to "Casey's Top 40" in 1997-However,he might've been told not to say the "B" word on the air. If that was the case, then it must have been pretty awkward announcing the #1 song for three weeks the Brooks hit was on top, according to Radio & Records (I don't remember firsthand, as the only countdown I had occasional access to at the time was Rick Dees, who did mention the title.) I guess Casey could have said something like "That's Meredith Brooks, with the #1 song in the USA for the third week in a row" or telling a story about her and saying "and here she is, with the biggest hit in the land this week, Meredith Brooks". But it would have required some clever writing and pacing to do it week after week.

And if he couldn't say that word, he likely would have to forgo recapping the top three songs from last week during it's time there (I'm sure he would've been allowed to say the word at least when it fell out of the Top 40).

Casey did announce the Meredith Brooks song title during its entire chart run (just as he did with Elton John and Rod Stewart's similarly titled hits in the '70s). It was left up to individual stations to edit the song out if they were prudish enough.

When Meredith Brooks's song was at the top and on the 1997 year end show(and on the VH1 Top 50 of 1997), Casey did say the name of the song but would pause between "Here's Meredith Brooks with" and the name of the song. So I guess that was where the edits could have been made.
Even though the word can have an offensive meaning, it's not a bad word when used as another word for a female dog (my mom is a dog breeder and the word is used without any embarassment in her circle). Actually Meredith Brooks used the word as a portrayal of the different emotions a woman goes through "without any apologies".

Must have been pretty interesting to hear the show on stations that edited out the whole song when it went to #1!

I guess they would have played #2 ("Do You Know What It Takes" by Robyn the first week, "How Bizarre" by OMC the second and third weeks) and then closed the show. Neither of those songs ever did reach #1 but the listeners from the stations that deleted Meredith's song (at least those who don't keep up with the charts) probably thought that those #2 songs were actually #1.
Some radio stations probably just ceased broadcasting the show just before Meredith's song was introed. In that case, there were probably some listeners who called the station to complain. I've never heard of a radio station that would announce on air that a given song wouldn't be played

How about Chuck Berry's "My Ding A Ling"?-When that song went to # 1 in October 1972,a vast majority of the "AT40" affiliates took it upon themselves to delete the song.

How about Chuck Berry's "My Ding A Ling"?-When that song went to # 1 in October 1972,a vast majority of the "AT40" affiliates took it upon themselves to delete the song. I don't know that a vast majority of stations airing AT40 refused to play the song; if that many stations went so far to edit it out of the countdown then they presumably weren't playing it at all, and if that was the case I doubt it would have been #1. But some did, and at least one in fact still does; Wikipedia says that this past fall WOGL in Philadelphia deleted "My Ding a Ling" in favor of a Premiere optional extra when it re-ran the 11/18/72 AT40, where it was down to #14. A similar situation was just missed in summer 1987 when George Michael's "I Want Your Sex" peaked at #2; the reluctance of many stations to play it probably kept it from the top. Charis has cue sheets from its hit run instructing stations on how they could skip the song if they wished, which is also true for several other late 80s and early 90s hits.

The memo with the cue sheet for 6/20/87 has Casey mentioning the fact that radio stations aren't playing the song. It's followed on the countdown by another controversial song which is also mentioned in the memo.
One of the stations which elected to omit the song from its broadcast of AT40 was WMC FM 100 in Memphis. I recorded the Top 100 of 1987 from there and George Michael's song was at the top of the seventh of eight hours. FM 100 skipped over the jingles as well as the intro, song, and outro and went straight to the intro for the next song, "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For". Until I saw the year end chart for myself, I assumed that FM100 had omitted the George Michael song as a mechanical error. I have since upgraded that show and the new copy has the song, the jingles preceding it and its intros and outros.

I listened to an aircheck of the 7/11/1987 show (Charlie Van Dyke subbed for Casey this week) from the RadioInsight board which was recorded from the Tucson affiliate at the time and "I Want Your Sex" was heard (name not mentioned by Charlie) on the aircheck so the Tucson station at the time likely did not have any problems with the song.
Interestingly though according to The Billboard Book of Top 40 hits, "I Want Your Sex" peaked at #5 on the Airplay charts (It peaked at #8 on R&R).
