I'm just really surprised this didn't wait one more year until the 40th anniversary of AT40 unless they couldn't agree to contract extension terms and it's up for renewal, or Casey is ill, etc.

From my email...
"Premiere Radio Networks wants to advise you that as of the weekend of July 4/5, 2009, Casey and Premiere will cease producing AMERICAN TOP 10 and AMERICAN TOP 20."
Anybody know the story behind this?

The problem with that station is that the sound is horrible , played in 32 kbps ! Hi, Actually this is not correct. WQMA has two streams. One is a 64k stream. If you are using the mp3PRO addon, it produces a sound similar to 128k (according to the company that licenses the technology). Sounds a lot better to me than most of the Windows Media streams I hear from other stations. Perhaps it varies by country (?), but here in the USA, JetAudio fully uses mp3PRO technology and it is free. There is also a decoder provided for Winamp if I remember right. Also free.

Only thing I could really add to the history here is that there wasn't a break between Elvis & Patti and Elvis & Elliott. The last date with Patti was the weekend of 10/14/96. Elliott was on the very next week which was the weekend of 10/21/96. There was no mention of the changeover on the show itself or even on the cue sheets sent to stations!! (Unless it was on some pages I didn't get - I got these shows secondhand...)
I have probably more than a hundred of these shows from original CD's between 1995 and 1997.
It was no AT40, but for what it was, a lighthearted countdown show aimed at younger listeners, I thought it hit its mark. They tried the comedy route but in a quick sarcastic tone closer to what local DJ's were doing without the lame prerecorded morning show like bits like Rick Dees.

That's Nina Blackwood's newly recorded top 40 countdown. She was recording them for Sirius prior to the channel merge. It looked for a while like she was going to stop doing that but I guess not.

From Radio Ink: "USRN Merges Dick Clark, Gary Bryan Shows NEW YORK -- December 17, 2008: The award-winning Dick Clark's Rock, Roll & Remember will merge next month with fellow United Stations Radio Networks show Rewind With Gary Bryan, combining the two programs' production staffs, content libraries, and affiliate lineups. The announcement was made jointly by Clark, who serves as USRN's Chairman Emeritus, and USRN Chairman/CEO Nick Verbitsky. The new, merged Oldies/Classic Hits show, Dick Clark Presents Rewind With Gary Bryan, will be hosted by KRTH/Los Angeles morning host Bryan, with feature segments from Clark. Affiliates will receive up to five hours of programming a week, beginning the week of January 26, 2009. Additionally, Clark announced that he will build out a new web portal targeted to Classic Hits and Oldies listeners, at www.dickclarkonline.com. The site will offer information on the Dick Clark radio properties, a Dick Clark blog, and e-commerce. Clark and USRN are also offering archived Rock, Roll & Remember shows for syndication; the show has been on the air since February 1982. The daily short feature "Dick Clark's Music Calendar" will continue in syndication. "The Dick Clark name is the most respected and trusted brand in all of broadcasting, and we're thrilled to continue to work with Dick to create new outlets for his legacy in radio," Verbitsky said. "We're excited to see Dick's leap into new media with his new website, and we're excited about our new radio partnership with Gary Bryan and KRTH." Clark said, "I'm thrilled to be working with Gary Bryan, KRTH Program Director Jhani Kaye, his team, and everyone involved in this project. Radio has always been my first love in broadcasting, and this is a fantastic way to continue that love affair." -- Think the segments with Dick Clark for this new show will be newly recorded? Would be great to hear new material from Dick and with the obvious prerecording and post-production I'm sure they could make him sound well enough for occasional segments on a new show. Also interesting that it seems like they'll continue to offer the original show as "archived shows for syndication". Best of both worlds. I'm looking forward to hearing more about this announcement. On a related note, I just purchased a "Best of American Bandstand" bootleg set from a private collector and it is really amazing. Complete episodes of the show from 1957 all the way through the last ABC episode in 1987, and various episodes from each decade (some are reruns from VH1). There are 16 DVD's filled with material including the very first New Years Rockin Eve from 1975 and a number of American Bandstand specials. It's just amazing the stuff that collectors have. Also a number of Dick Clark interviews from various TV shows. I just bought the set to dub a few of the things to my iPod so if anyone else wants the DVD's for the price I paid (only $50), email or private message me.

In the later years, I know the show was hosted by Jeff Davis (www.jeffdavis.com) and distributed by On The Radio Broadcasting. I would say thats just self distribution but the company distributed other programs too like Dr. Demento for a while. Seemed to be some kind of collection of a handful of programs that were no longer distributed by Westwood One. Heres the archived webpage that sold the show to stations and mentions some of their other programs: web.archive.org/web/19980111040404/otrb.com/ontheinf.htm

Big Ron hosted the syndicated "On The Radio". It was an hour long and distributed by Westwood One. Since I don't live in NYC, I don't know if that answers the original question.
I have some "On The Radio" shows. Some of them CD's given to me from Big Ron himself. Here's an example of one I've got:
ON THE RADIO - JANUARY 28, 1995; SHOW #95-05
Sukiyaki - 4PM You Want This - Janet Jackson If - Janet Jackson All I Wanna Do - Sheryl Crow Rain King - Counting Crows Take A Bow - Madonna Always And Forever - Luther Vandross Another Night - Real McCoy I Belong To You - Toni Braxton Always - Bon Jovi On Bended Knee - Boyz II Men
I know the show was on in 1989 as it aired before "Future Hits 89" on my local station on a tape recording I have. It lasted a long time too. I've got CD's from 1999 (the show wasn't hosted by Big Ron then).

Hi,
Jason checking in. Did you write jason@q1520radio.com?? No known problems on my end with email.
There is only one week of overlap this year where there will be a Christmas show and a regular show. It's November 22/23. WQMA will air the regular chart show. I'm not sure when we'll air the Christmas show we don't play but we will eventually air it too. Probably it will air sometime around the Christmas holiday like Christmas Eve or Christmas Day sometime. We've already got some great longform Christmas programming contracted this year like a 12 hour special titled "Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas In America".
Back to AT10, Nov 29/30 and Dec 6/7 will be Christmas songs.
Dec 13/14 will be the top 60 Christmas Part 1
Dec 20/21 will be the top 60 Christmas Part 2
Dec 27/28 will be the top 30 AC songs of 2008
Hope this helps.

I know CT40 launched on hundreds of stations but I'm pretty sure the overly wild music fragmentation of the 90's almost killed it. The show itself realized that and split into the 3 different formats.
Casey seemed to repeat affiliate mentions more frequently on the top 40 show before it's demise.
AT40 with Casey relaunched with better CHR affiliates due to Premiere's help getting it on Clear Channel stations. Also Premiere had policies that helped get Casey more stations. With Premiere, one area could air the HOT AC and the CHR show; under Westwood One, exclusivity agreements prevented this. In the mid 90s, I know one PD that wanted Casey's CHR show but couldn't get it because CH20 was airing in that city.

CT40 didn't have a great number of affiliates when it was actually airing (in the mid to late 90's especially). I believe "Casey's Hot 20" was probably more widely heard. As such, reruns seem less likely to me than an AT40 type situation. But maybe I'm wrong. Especially after some time passes.
Another thought is that it would be great if some past syndicated shows could air as specials somewhere. Something like "lost radio shows weekend". I'm sure syndicators themselves could dig in the vaults and put together such packages and barter them as special programming to stations to run for an entire weekend (maybe holiday weekends). Why not a weekend of like Dick Clark year end countdowns for example? Or shows that don't exist anymore like countdowns from Scott Shannon or Dan Ingrams 80's top 40 show (Top 40 Satellite Survey I think it was)? These types of shows will never be rerun on a regular basis because they were short lived but would be great specialty programming somewhere.
Perfect example of the lack of creativity in radio today. Things like this would be super cheap to produce but would actually have great nostalgia factor. The most talked about shows on XM seem to be Casey, Rick, and Wolfman Jack. People like reruns of #1 DJ's much better than voicetracking nobodies or automated jukeboxes. (Of course XM just throws these on because they are cheap anyway...)

If they don't mean AT40, they are running his "On Air with Ryan Seacrest" show that runs on various stations in the afternoon.
Ryan is only live on KIIS-FM in LA doing a morning drive show. He replaced Rick Dees as the morning guy there.

According to this article: www.radioink.com/HeadlineEntry.asp?hid=142936&pt=todaysnewsIt's supposed to be on Q100 Atlanta, and they stream, but the Q100 website doesn't have any info on it. While poking around for this info, I found some info about another new countdown show from Premiere debuting this weekend. The iTunes Top 30. It's set to countdown the top 30 songs on the iTunes chart on top 40 stations nationwide. Ironically the website for the Internet based countdown show is pretty bare: www.theitunesdownload.com/
