After hearing this past weekend's 2/4/1984 show with the Jackie Wilson tribute, I thought I would start a thread about the artist tributes that have been done on AT40. Just like the other threads on here that contain lists, I'll edit this post to include the artist and the date the tribute was heard. These are the ones I know of so far: John Lennon - 12/13/1980 Karen Carpenter - 2/19/1983 (mentioned here) Jackie Wilson - 2/4/1984 Andy Gibb - 4/2/1988 (mentioned here)

I think there was a tribute to Liberace on the February 21, 1987 episode aired last year.
There was a tribute to Aaliyah on the September 8, 2001 episode of the second run of AT40. I remember that well because OZ-FM didn't get the actual broadcast for September 15 that year in the wake of the 9/11 attacks and aired that same episode with Aaliyah's tribute for a second straight week.
It's a shame that Casey never got a do a tribute to Michael Jackson in the summer of 2009. Had AT20 continued for one more week, there would have been a tribute for sure.

I believe there was a Muddy Waters tribute in 1983.
Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009 (a Thursday). Casey's final shows aired the weekend of July 4-5. I don't know when Casey recorded his final shows, but if it was before the 25th, maybe they could have gotten him in the studio to do a last-minute tribute like with John Lennon's death.

There was a Jeff Porcaro (Toto) tribute in 1992 or 1993. Shadoe Fan, can you confirm when?

I think I remember hearing it was done before. And honestly, I want you to put yourself in his shoes for a moment. You've worked for 40-50 years or more, the gamble you took 39 years before paid off big time, but by your own admission the music isn't interesting to you anymore and hasn't been in many, many, many years. To top it off, the main anchor show of your career has been hosted by someone else for over 5 years. You recorded your last shows, everything was fine so no retakes were needed, and you are now officially retired. Not leaving to start a new show, not to start a new career...you are done. Would you go back and recut something? I wouldn't. Not trying to be a jerk. Just saying he was done and retired. You couldn't have pulled me in there to re-record anything unless there was a bad track that needed to be redone.

News of MJ's death broke late Thursday afternoon (6/25/09). At that time Casey usually recorded his shows on Wednesday or Thursday morning IIRC, so it was almost certainly done before Jackson died.
The Lennon situation isn't quite the same as in December 1980 he had a new song moving up the chart and a story was prepared on his career resurgence and future prospects, which would have really sounded bad if it had aired unchanged the weekend after he died. If Michael Jackson had been on the chart with a new hit in June 2009 then things might have been changed up with Casey returning to the studio to record a tribute, but he wasn't and Casey didn't.

There was also a question asked about posthumous hits on that 1980 show that was edited out in the replacement disc sent out as well. They were fortunate in that the question the segment was asked was on the A side and the Lennon song on the B side of the same record. So, 1 replacement was all that was needed.
And your explanation of the difference is also important. Casey would have looked really unsympathetic or dumb had a song been climbing and no mention was made. But there wasn't so its just one of those things.

Interestingly there was no tribute to Marvin Gaye shortly after his death. That's kinda surprising.

Yeah, I didn't mean to say he should have been dragged back and made to record something after he was over and done with everything and retired. I guess it just seemed odd that a major star died without mention on the show. Heck, maybe they could have cut a tribute without having Casey return and fit it into the show somehow (maybe using old AT40 audio of Casey instead).
