Great thread. Thanks to giannirubino for all the tabulations. A few two-hit wonders I really like which I don't think have been mentioned are Kim Wilde and Level 42. Yeah, Kim Wilde would also by on my list! #25 Kids in America (1982) #1 You Keep Me Hangin' On (1987) And one of Level 42's with Something About You at #7. Their other hit was Lessons in Love at #12, not a fan.

Add Parliament to my list!
#15 Tear the Roof Off the Sucker (1976) #16 Flash Light (1978)
PS-Its brother band, Funkadelic, was a one-hit wonder with 1978's One Nation Under a Groove at #28, both were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one music collective led by George Clinton, Parliament-Funkadelic AKA P-Funk in 1997.

IMHO it was a better song than "YKMHO" though I'm sure a few would disagree. She hit #41 with "You Came" in the fall of 1988, keeping her at just two top 40 hits in the States. As for "Lessons In Love" -- always been a big fan of that song! To each his/her own as they say.

Yeah I prefer "Lessons in Love" myself too. Brotherhood of Man was mentioned earlier but I don't think the other two hit wonder artists that appeared on the first ever AT40 were. The second song ever played on AT40 was by such an artist, Mark Lindsay. He had "Silver Bird" which followed up his first hit "Arizona". These hits peaked at 25 and 10. Mark was the lead singer of the Raiders so he had many other appearances in the top 40. The second two wonder artist played was the Poppy Family with their first hit "Which Way You Goin' Billy", a #2 hit. Their second hit was "That's Where I Went Wrong" which reached #29.

A lot of these artists had their two hits from the same album and had no single releases before these two hits. Of those that amassed at least 2000 points, these artists fit that criteria:
Extreme Soul II Soul Crowded House Young M.C. Marky Mark & the Funky Bunch Jesus Jones Robbie Dupree Tara Kemp Another Bad Creation a-ha Nu Shooz Vanilla Ice Tone Loc Natural Selection Londonbeat Alias Alannah Myles Falco
13 of these 18 artists had their hits in the 89-91 time frame.

It made the top 10 there and is a better song than SYRWM imo. I wish they would have released Another Step as the follow up here, but absent much promotion not sure it would have made a huge difference. Lessons In Love has grown on me over time. During its chart run I just thought it was kinda meh compared to Something About You.

Here are a couple of two hit wonders I thought of:Disco Tex & The Sex-O-Lettes:"Get Dancin" (1974) & "I Wanna Dance Wit Choo" (1975) & Leon Russell:"Tightrope" (1972) & "Lady Blue" (1975).

White Lion only had two top 40 hits in the late 80's. Remarkably, both went top 10.

Yeah I prefer "Lessons in Love" myself too. I have been on both side of the "Lessons" conversation. In 1987, I couldn't stand the song. In 1992, in college, I was mortified that one of my best friends thought it was the greatest song of all time. However, over the last 15 years or so, it has grown into one of my favorites as well. Mark King's bass playing at the beginning of "Lessons" is one of my favorite things about a top 40 song ever.

2158 2 Live Crew 2143 Tommy Page 2120 Alias 2092 Alannah Myles Looking at the list so far, the wildest one for me is 2 Live Crew. That they were bigger than 2 hit wonder acts with #1 and #2 songs, from their actual charting era of 1989-1991, is wild. Not as wild as them...but still wild! A few more that I thought of that might have been mentioned, but just in case they haven't: Janis Ian Animotion

Now, I have a question. What do I do with Los Del Rio? Wikipedia says original mix hit #23, and a remix hit #1. I must peruse 1996 and see if that is the case. (Deep sigh.)

Janis Ian, yes. Animotion, no (three.) Good catch! I forget "Let Him Go" hit the top 40. It is up there in that 1985 realm of Boy Meets Girl and Go West! in which I forget which groups slipped into the 40 with a small hit, and which groups just missed it. Another one from 1989 that would be interesting is Great White. And also from that time, even though he had one hit solo and one hit as a duo, Brent Bourgeois.

BB (BT) is already on the list to be done. I want to know how Brent fares if we count both his 1987 group and his 1990 solo top 40 hits.
I always forget GW only had 2 pop hits, since they had more on rock, and, with then living near another country's border, I heard so many more of their songs on the radio.
Now to research what's up with Los Del Rio.
