Really underappreciated I think. I was about to tell you that I put all those songs on my fantasy #1 list from 1966, then I looked back at that list and saw that's exactly what you were referring to. Thanks for the thumbs up. Yes, those Chris Montez singles from that era of his career were great; so light and breezy, with just the right amount of Latin influence. They sounded like live recordings from some intimate nightclub, but I can't verify they were live. In the mid '70's, my dad owned and played a couple of these records; that's probably why I grew to love them as a kid.

Here's 1986. It's one of my four or five favorite years in music, and yet, there's a huge gap in the quality of the #1s. You'll notice that there were only two weeks in which their #1 and mine were the same. Compare it to my all-time fave year, 1978, in which there were 15 such weeks. Hey, doofus67, I really enjoyed checking out your fantasy #1 lists year by year. I recently got to wondering how many songs did we have in common on our respective fantasy lists. I compared our lists and saw we have many songs in common. I compiled the results and decided to post them here. Now, among these fantasy #1's that we both chose, there's much discrepancy as to how many weeks at #1 we assigned each of them to, and what weeks we assigned them to. You'll notice a definite pattern regarding the latter; I usually assigned them to an earlier time period than you did. In fact, for three songs, I listed them as #1's in the end of one year, and you chose those songs as #1's for early in the following year. Here are the results. (Dates are week ending dates):
1. Mandy/Barry Manilow Me: 1/11/75 You: 1/18/75-2/8/75 2. Philadelphia Freedom/Elton John Me: 4/12/75 You: 4/12/75-5/3/75 3. Ozempic, I mean, Magic/Pilot (LOL) Me: 6/14/75 You: 7/14/75-8/2/75 4. Very cool, slf. In choosing my #1s, I didn't refer to your choices or anyone else's. Which makes it really impressive that we wound up with an even 50 common ones. In 1985 alone, we had eight.
As for the time variances, I made a strong point of keeping my peak dates for all songs in line with Cash Box's. This caused a lot of the unpredictability that OWTC brought up, in the nicest possible way. Clusters of songs would peak in the same area of the chart around the same time.

In case you're wondering, when I was creating my fantasy #1 lists a couple of years ago (Whew, has it been THAT long?), I tended to err on the side of putting my #1 songs early in the song's actual chart run because that is when I felt the song was freshest and most appealing to the average listener, despite what the charts said. Although sometimes, like you, I'd put the song in the middle of the chart run, or when it was at its peak. However, virtually without exception, I'd never place the #1 song when it was past its actual chart peak; that seemed to me anticlimactic and pointless.
