Hello, everybody In the spirit of the belief that we all gotta have a hobby, I'd like to begin sharing the results of a project that I worked on years ago, put away, and recently picked up and finished. That project is determining, for various years in the rock era, what would be MY choice for #1 song for each calendar week of those years, reflecting my song preferences. I used my Billboard reference books and actual weekly Hot 100 charts provided online to determine when my favorite songs were rising the charts or peaking, and use that info to decide which week or weeks I would assign each of my favorites to the #1 spot. I made any song that charted on the Billboard Hot 100 eligible to be one of my #1's. And, as would be true of anybody who would formulate such a list, most of my personal #1 songs did NOT hit #1 for real, many didn't make Top 10, several (especially in the '60's) didn't even make the Top 40. In each line I first give the week ending date, then the actual Billboard #1, then my personal #1. In this post I'm starting with 1964, and I will, in chronological order, add another year's worth of #1's every few days, or whenever I feel like it . I hope you all find this interesting and feel free to give me feedback. 1. 1/4/64 There I've Said It Again/Bobby Vinton Louis, Louis/The Kingsmen 2. 1/11/64 There I've Said It Again/Bobby Vinton Forget Him/Bobby Rydell 3. 1/18/64 There I've Said It Again/Bobby Vinton Forget Him/Bobby Rydell 4. 1/25/64 There I've Said It Again/Bobby Vinton Louis, Louis/The Kingsmen 5. 2/1/64 I Want To Hold Your Hand/The Beatles I Want To Hold Your Hand/The Beatles

A fantasy #1 list. I like it! Interesting chart action. I count five songs that "bounce" -- they're #1, drop down, and go back again. Do you like it when songs do that? Me too, but maybe not quite so often...
You also like your British Invasion acts. You put Dusty, the Zombies, the Searchers, and Chad & Jeremy at #1 in the States -- something none of them were able to accomplish for real.
For what it's worth, I've been working, on and off, on a fantasy top 20. Mine is going to cover just the mid to late 70s and the early to mid 80s.

Hello, again. I'm back to chronicle my fantasy #1 list for 1965 (thanks, doofus67, for the name idea). I plan to do one of these lists for every year through 1988. I'll stop there, because after that year, the attention I gave to Top 40 radio became less intense and more sporadic. In mid-1990, my interest returned full force, but waned for good sometime in 1992, when rap and grunge started to take over. Thanks to everyone who has read the first one and taken interest. (Remember, the first column has the actual Billboard #1's; the second column has my choices for #1.)

Hello, again, and Happy Labor Day. I though I'd take advantage of my day off and submit my next fantasy #1 installment, this time for 1966, another great year in music. And, to emphasize the notion that some of the greatest songs lay below the Top 40, FOUR of my personal #1's fit that description. (Denoted by an asterisk) Remember that the first column consists of actual Billboard #1's; the second column consists of my #1's.

Hello, again. I'd like to present my fantasy #1 list for perhaps my all-time favorite year for pop music---1967. In fact, I made room for 35 of my favorite songs of that year to go #1---and still had to leave out many songs that I felt were worthy. The competition was especially fierce in the spring and summer of that year, when I had ten songs in a row spend a single week at the top spot so as to fit as many of my favorites as possible. And just as in 1966, I chose four songs that didn't even hit the Billboard Top 40 (denoted by an asterisk), one of them (from early November) I bet none of you have ever heard of. (Of course, the first column are Billboard #1's; the second column are my #1's)

Just as a reminder that I'm a child of the Summer of Love, you picked "San Francisco" to be #1 the week that I was born! Clever...

Going back to 1966, you have "But It's Alright" by J.J. Jackson as a two-week #1. I love that!

Hello, again, and welcome to my latest fantasy #1 list, this time for 1968. As before, all songs that didn't make the BB Top 40 are denoted by an asterisk; and the first column consists of Billboard #1's; the second column, my #1's. And just to demonstrate how off-center my taste in music can be, let me point something out. The song in the left column that spent the most weeks at number one (in BB) was sung by Paul McCartney; the song in the right column (my #1's) that spent the most weeks at number one was sung by Chuck Woolery. Hello, again. It's time now to present my fantasy #1 list for the year 1969. One thing I'd like to mention is that a song that I have at #1 for multiple weeks is not necessarily more loved than a song that is at #1 for just one week. For instance, I have a certain Fifth Dimension song topping my chart for three weeks, but there are certain single week #1's from earlier in the year that I love better. But sometimes songs spend longer at #1 on my list because IMHO the competition is not as strong, whereas many single week #1's in a row mean that IMHO the competition is stronger. (As usual, the left column are Billboard #1's; the right column are my #1's; and my #1's outside the Top 40 are denoted by an asterisk.)
1. 1/4/69 I Heard It Through The Grapevine/Marvin Gaye I'm Gonna Make You Love Me/Supremes & Temptations 2. 1/11/69 I Heard It Through The Grapevine/Marvin Gaye Soulful Strut/Young-Holt Unlimited 3. 1/18/69 I Heard It Through The Grapevine/Marvin Gaye California Soul/The Fifth Dimension 4 1/25/69 I Heard It Through The Grapevine/Marvin Gaye California Soul/The Fifth Dimension 5. 2/1/69 Crimson And Clover/Tommy James & The Shondells Touch Me/The Doors 6. 2/8/69 Crimson And Clover/Tommy James & The Shondells Hang 'Em High/Booker T. Hello, again. I'm back with my fantasy #1 list for 1970. Now that I'm entering the '70's, I hope I'll be including more songs that the rest of you are familiarwith. Hello, again. I'm back again to present another fantasy #1 list, this time for the year 1973. This one has noticeably fewer #1 songs than in past years---I have selected only twenty songs. This will part of a trend as I get further into the '70's and into the 80's. On the average, I've selected fewer #1's per year from 1973-1988, as opposed to 1964-1972. It's because, IMHO, there are far more truly great songs worthy of the top spot in the '60's and early 70's than in the later time period. In general, the fewer great songs in a particular year, the more weeks each song has to spent at #1--- and vice versa. (The first column are Billboard #1's; the second column are my #1's)

Now you're getting into the time when I was starting to remember the music I was hearing on the radio. (As you can tell by my screen name, this was the year that I turned six.)
I agree with "One of a Kind (Love Affair)", "The Love I Lost," and "Hello It's Me", but not with "Oh, Babe, What Would You Say?" or "Mind Games."
