Good evening. I'm submitting my latest fantasy #1 list, this time for 1983, my 2nd favorite year for music of the '80's. Of course, 1983 was the year in which the definitive music sounds of the '80's (Michael Jackson, Prince, British technopop) began their dominance over early '80's yacht rock and country pop, although the old sounds hadn't yet gone away. In short, the variety of music styles on Top 40 radio was pretty amazing. Many of those styles are represented on my #1 list. (The left column are Billboard #1's; the right column are my #1's.)
1. 1/1/83 Maneater/Hall & Oates (frozen week) Africa/Toto 2. 1/8/83 Maneater/Hall & Oates Africa/Toto 3. 1/15/83 Down Under/Men At Work Africa/Toto 4. 1/22/83 Down Under/Men At Work Africa/Weezer (just kidding!) 5. 1/29/83 Down Under/Men At Work Heart To Heart/Kenny Loggins 6. 2/5/83 Africa/Toto Africa/Toto 7. 2/12/83 Down Under/Men At Work Goody Two Shoes/Adam Ant 8. 2/19/83 Baby, Come To Me/Patti Austin & James Ingram Billie Jean/Michael Jackson 9. 2/26/83 Baby, Come To Me/Patti Austin & James Ingram Billie Jean/Michael Jackson 10. 3/5/83 Billie Jean/Michael Jackson Hungry Like The Wolf/Duran Duran 11. 3/12/83 Billie Jean/Michael Jackson Hungry Like The Wolf/Duran Duran 12. 3/19/83 Billie Jean/Michael Jackson Hungry Like The Wolf/Duran Duran 13. 3/26/83 Billie Jean/Michael Jackson I Know There's Something Going On/Frida 14. 4/2/83 Billie Jean/Michael Jackson I Know There's Something Going On/Frida 15. 4/9/83 Billie Jean/Michael Jackson Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)/Journey 16. 4/16/83 Billie Jean/Michael Jackson Mr. Roboto/Styx 17. 4/23/83 Come On Eileen/Dexy's Midnight Runners Der Kommissar/After The Fire 18. 4/30/83 Beat It/Michael Jackson Beat It/Michael Jackson 19. 5/7/83 Beat It/Michael Jackson Beat It/Michael Jackson 20. 5/14/83 Beat It/Michael Jackson Rio/Duran Duran 21. 5/21/83 Let's Dance/David Bowie Rio/Duran Duran 22. 5/28/83 Flashdance...What A Feeling/Irene Cara Always Something There To Remind Me/Naked Eyes 23. 6/4/83 Flashdance...What A Feeling/Irene Cara Always Something There To Remind Me/Naked Eyes 24. 6/11/83 Flashdance...What A Feeling/Irene Cara Always Something There To Remind Me/Naked Eyes 25. 6/18/83 Flashdance...What A Feeling/Irene Cara Always Something There To Remind Me/Naked Eyes 26. 6/25/83 Flashdance...What A Feeling/Irene Cara Every Breath You Take/The Police 27. 7/2/83 Flashdance...What A Feeling/Irene Cara 1999/Prince 28. 7/9/83 Every Breath You Take/The Police 1999/Prince 29. 7/16/83 Every Breath You Take/The Police 1999/Prince 30. 7/23/83 Every Breath You Take/The Police 1999/Prince 31. 7/30/83 Every Breath You Take/The Police Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This/The Eurythmics 32. 8/6/83 Every Breath You Take/The Police Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This/The Eurythmics 33. 8/13/83 Every Breath You Take/The Police Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This/The Eurythmics 34. 8/20/83 Every Breath You Take/The Police Puttin' On The Ritz/Taco 35. 8/27/83 Every Breath You Take/The Police Puttin' On The Ritz/Taco 36. 9/3/83 Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This/The Eurythmics Don't Cry/Asia 37. 9/10/83 Maniac/Michael Sembello Total Eclipse Of The Heart/Bonnie Tyler 38. 9/17/83 Maniac/Michael Sembello King Of Pain/The Police 39. 9/24/83 Tell Her About It/Billy Joel King Of Pain/The Police 40. 10/1/83 Total Eclipse Of The Heart/Bonnie Tyler True/Spandau Ballet 41. 10/8/83 Total Eclipse Of The Heart/Bonnie Tyler One Thing Leads To Another/The Fixx 42. 10/15/83 Total Eclipse Of The Heart/Bonnie Tyler One Thing Leads To Another/The Fixx 43. 10/22/83 Total Eclipse Of The Heart/Bonnie Tyler One Thing Leads To Another/The Fixx 44. 10/29/83 Islands In The Stream/Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton This Time/Bryan Adams 45. 11/5/83 Islands In The Stream/Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton One Thing Leads To Another/The Fixx 46. 11/12/83 All Night Long (All Night)/Lionel Richie Send Her My Love/Journey 47. 11/19/83 All Night Long (All Night)/Lionel Richie Uptown Girl/Billy Joel 48. 11/26/83 All Night Long (All Night)/Lionel Richie Uptown Girl/Billy Joel 49. 12/3/83 All Night Long (All Night)/Lionel Richie Uptown Girl/Billy Joel 50. 12/10/83 Say Say Say/Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson Uptown Girl/Billy Joel 51. 12/17/83 Say Say Say/Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson Synchronicity II/The Police 52. 12/24/83 Say Say Say/Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson Synchronicity II/The Police 53. 12/31/83 Say Say Say/Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson (frozen week) Synchronicity II/The Police
Next up, 1984! Here's a hint about what's coming up. I have two wacky novelty songs early in the year. Then in the summer of that year, I do a 180 and include what I consider my all-time favorite love song.

Hey, Vince -- that's 27 weeks at #1 for Blondie! You're not a fan, are you? ☺ Yes, I'm a Blondie fan. Their singles were unique. Especially when compared to all the Neil Diamond, Air Supply, Barbra Steisand & Kenny Rogers that was on the air at the time.

Yes, I'm a Blondie fan. Their singles were unique. Especially when compared to all the Neil Diamond, Air Supply, Barbra Streisand & Kenny Rogers that was on the air at the time. Good point. With the bad economy at the time, radio was playing it super safe. Blondie came up with some hot singles. One of them will be #1 on my list.

Good evening. Here is my latest fantasy #1 list, this time for 1984. Just as I teased you earlier, I have a major study in contrast in the first half of the year. Two classic silly songs of the '80's appear in the first three months. Then, in early summer, I include my choice for all-time greatest love song, a love ballad so breath-takingly raw and honest, it's scary. It's one of two songs on my list that didn't make the top 40 (noted by an asterisk). Another point I would like to bring up is this. By the mid '80's, IMHO, there were fewer and fewer great songs to make the Top 40 compared to the '60's and '70's and more and more mediocre songs. Therefore, in these last few fantasy #1 lists that I submit, there may be a few #1's that I would consider only pretty good as opposed to good or great. They were simply the best of what I considered a mediocre bunch. On this list, songs by Real Life, Billy Idol, Dan Hartman, and Wham would be in said category. (Left column are Billboard #1's; right column are my #1's.)
1. 1/7/84 Say Say Say/Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson The Curly Shuffle/Jump "N The Saddle 2. 1/14/84 Say Say Say/Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson The Curly Shuffle/Jump "N The Saddle 3. 1/21/84 Owner Of A Lonely Heart/Yes The Curly Shuffle/Jump "N The Saddle 4. 1/28/84 Owner Of A Lonely Heart/Yes Send Me An Angel/Real Life 5. 2/4/84 Karma Chameleon/Culture Club Wrapped Around Your Finger/The Police 6. 2/11/84 Karma Chameleon/Culture Club Wrapped Around Your Finger/The Police 7. 2/18/84 Karma Chameleon/Culture Club Wrapped Around Your Finger/The Police 8. 2/25/84 Jump/Van Halen Wrapped Around Your Finger/The Police 9. 3/3/84 Jump/Van Halen Jump/Van Halen 10. 3/10/84 Jump/Van Halen Jump/Van Halen 11. 3/17/84 Jump/Van Halen Jump/Van Halen 12. 3/24/84 Jump/Van Halen Eat It/"Weird Al" Yankovic 13. 3/31/84 Footloose/Kenny Loggins Eat It/"Weird Al" Yankovic 14. 4/7/84 Footloose/Kenny Loggins They Don't Know/Tracey Ullman 15. 4/14/84 Footloose/Kenny Loggins They Don't Know/Tracey Ullman 16. 4/21/84 Against All Odds/Phil Collins They Don't Know/Tracey Ullman 17. 4/28/84 Against All Odds/Phil Collins They Don't Know/Tracey Ullman 18. 5/5/84 Against All Odds/Phil Collins They Don't Know/Tracey Ullman 19. 5/12/84 Hello/Lionel Richie The Reflex/Duran Duran 20. 5/19/84 Hello/Lionel Richie The Reflex/Duran Duran 21. 5/26/84 Let's Hear It For The Boy/Deniece Williams The Reflex/Duran Duran 22. 6/2/84 Let's Hear It For The Boy/Deniece Williams When We Make Love/Alabama* 23. 6/9/84 Time After Time/Cyndi Lauper When We Make Love/Alabama* 24. 6/16/84 Time After Time/Cyndi Lauper When We Make Love/Alabama* 25. 6/23/84 The Reflex/Duran Duran When We Make Love/Alabama* 26. 6/30/84 The Reflex/Duran Duran When Doves Cry/Prince 27. 7/7/84 When Doves Cry/Prince Eyes Without A Face/Billy Idol 28. 7/14/84 When Doves Cry/Prince Panama/Van Halen 29. 7/21/84 When Doves Cry/Prince Panama/Van Halen 30. 7/28/84 When Doves Cry/Prince Panama/Van Halen 31. 8/4/84 When Doves Cry/Prince I Can Dream About You/Dan Hartman 32. 8/11/84 Ghostbusters/Ray Parker Jr. I Can Dream About You/Dan Hartman 33. 8/18/84 Ghostbusters/Ray Parker Jr. Let's Go Crazy/Prince & The Revolution 34. 8/25/84 Ghostbusters/Ray Parker Jr. Let's Go Crazy/Prince & The Revolution 35. 9/1/84 What's Love Got To Do With It/Tina Turner Let's Go Crazy/Prince & The Revolution 36. 9/8/84 What's Love Got To Do With It/Tina Turner Drive/The Cars 37. 9/15/84 What's Love Got To Do With It/Tina Turner Drive/The Cars 38. 9/22/84 Missing You/John Waite Cruel Summer/Bananarama 39. 9/29/84 Let's Go Crazy/Prince & The Revolution Cruel Summer/Bananarama 40. 10/6/84 Let's Go Crazy/Prince & The Revolution Drive/The Cars 41. 10/13/84 I Just Called To Say I Love You/Stevie Wonder On The Wings Of A Nightingale/The Everly Brothers* 42. 10/20/84 I Just Called To Say I Love You/Stevie Wonder Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go/Wham! 43. 10/27/84 I Just Called To Say I Love You/Stevie Wonder Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go/Wham! 44. 11/3/84 Caribbean Queen (No More Love On The Run)/Billy Ocean Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go/Wham! 45. 11/10/84 Caribbean Queen (No More Love On The Run)/Billy Ocean Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go/Wham! 46. 11/17/84 Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go/Wham! As for 1983, slf, I really like all of your choices...with the possible exception of Asia's "Don't Cry." This one has never done anything for me, personally. I've always felt it was a softer sequel to "Heat of the Moment," which you also put at #1.

For 1984, my no-go songs are "The Reflex" and "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go." Both artists did much better elsewhere.
I noticed your turnover rate is about the same as Billboard's: 20 new #1's, compared with 19 on the original chart.

Hello, again. Today's fantasy #1 list is from 1985, a year that, IMO, was a marked improvement musically over '84. While only twenty songs made my cut the previous year, thirty songs made the cut in '85. And it all goes downhill after this year; for each of the remaining three years that I'll be submitting #1 lists, I select only 22 #1 songs per year. And in each of those last three years, there will be a few #1's that I'll only be mildly enthusiastic about. But all my choices in '85 are solid, high-quality ones. (The left column are Billboard #1's; the right column are my #1's.)
1. 1/5/85 Like A Virgin/Madonna Valotte/Julian Lennon 2. 1/12/85 Like A Virgin/Madonna Easy Lover/Phillip Bailey & Phil Collins 3. 1/19/85 Like A Virgin/Madonna Easy Lover/Phillip Bailey & Phil Collins 4. 1/26/85 Like A Virgin/Madonna Easy Lover/Phillip Bailey & Phil Collins 5. 2/2/85 I Want To Know What Love Is/Foreigner The Heat Is On/Glenn Frey 6. 2/9/85 I Want To Know What Love Is/Foreigner The Heat Is On/Glenn Frey 7. 2/16/85 Careless Whisper/Wham! featuring George Michael The Heat Is On/Glenn Frey 8. 2/23/85 Careless Whisper/Wham! featuring George Michael Relax/Frankie Goes To Hollywood 9. 3/2/85 Careless Whisper/Wham! featuring George Michael Relax/Frankie Goes To Hollywood 10. 3/9/85 Can't Fight This Feeling/REO Speedwagon Only The Young/Journey 11. 3/16/85 Can't Fight This Feeling/REO Speedwagon Take Me With You/Prince & The Revolution 12. 3/23/85 Can't Fight This Feeling/REO Speedwagon Take Me With You/Prince & The Revolution 13. 3/30/85 One More Night/Phil Collins Somebody/Bryan Adams 14. 4/6/85 One More Night/Phil Collins We Are The World/USA For Africa 15. 4/13/85 We Are The World/USA For Africa We Are The World/USA For Africa 16. 4/20/85 We Are The World/USA For Africa We Are The World/USA For Africa 17. 4/27/85 We Are The World/USA For Africa Don't You Forget About Me/Simple Minds 18. 5/4/85 We Are The World/USA For Africa Don't You Forget About Me/Simple Minds 19. 5/11/85 Crazy For You/Madonna One Night In Bangkok/Murray Head 20. 5/18/85 Don't You Forget About Me/Simple Minds Everybody Wants To Rule The World/Tears For Fears 21. 5/25/85 Everything She Wants/Wham! Ooh, slf...then there's 1985. Here's where you begin to lose me.
"Relax"? Grating and obnoxious; can't relax when it comes on.
"Only the Young"? As Journey goes, dull.
"Somebody"? Somebody may like it, but that somebody's not me.
"The Search Is Over"? Overdramatized.
"We Built This City"? No, they didn't build that!
You made plenty of good choices too, by the way.
