Good evening. Welcome to my latest fantasy #1 list, this time for 1986. IMHO, the music choices at the beginning of the year were rather mediocre; except for my carryover choice from '85, my #1's for Jan and Feb are only mildly appealing. The same goes for songs later in the year by El Debarge, Journey, Wang Chung, and the Bangles. As I stated in a previous post, these later years of the '80's would have time periods in which I would struggle to choose a song worthy of #1. However, these years still featured many greats songs, as well. (The left column are Billboard #1's; the right column are my #1's.)
1. 1/4/86 Say You, Say Me/Lionel Richie (frozen week) Alive And Kicking/Simple Minds 2. 1/11/86 Say You, Say Me/Lionel Richie Everybody Dance/Ta Mara & The Seen 3. 1/18/86 That's What Friends Are For/Dionne & Friends Everybody Dance/Ta Mara & The Seen 4. 1/25/86 That's What Friends Are For/Dionne & Friends A Love Bizarre/Sheila E. 5. 2/1/86 That's What Friends Are For/Dionne & Friends A Love Bizarre/Sheila E. 6. 2/8/86 That's What Friends Are For/Dionne & Friends Silent Running/Mike & The Mechanics 7. 2/15/86 How Will I Know/Whitney Houston Silent Running/Mike & The Mechanics 8. 2/22/86 How Will I Know/Whitney Houston A Love Bizarre/Sheila E. 9. 3/1/86 Kyrie/Mr. Mister Let's Go All The Way/Sly Fox 10. 3/8/86 Kyrie/Mr. Mister Let's Go All The Way/Sly Fox 11. 3/15/86 Sara/Starship Let's Go All The Way/Sly Fox 12. 3/22/86 These Dreams/Heart Let's Go All The Way/Sly Fox 13. 3/29/86 Rock Me Amadeus/Falco Let's Go All The Way/Sly Fox 14. 4/5/86 Rock Me Amadeus/Falco Calling America/Electric Light Orchestra 15. 4/12/86 Rock Me Amadeus/Falco West End Girls/The Pet Shop Boys 16. 4/19/86 Kiss/Prince & The Revolution West End Girls/The Pet Shop Boys 17. 4/26/86 Kiss/Prince & The Revolution West End Girls/The Pet Shop Boys 18. 5/3/86 Addicted To Love/Robert Palmer Something About You/Level 42 19. 5/10/86 West End Girls/The Pet Shop Boys West End Girls/The Pet Shop Boys 20. 5/17/86 The Greatest Love Of All/Whitney Houston Something About You/Level 42 21. 5/24/86 The Greatest Love Of All/Whitney Houston Something About You/Level 42 22. 5/31/86 The Greatest Love Of All/Whitney Houston Something About You/Level 42 23. 6/7/86 Live To Tell/Madonna Who's Johnny?/El Debarge 24. 6/14/86 On My Own/Patti LaBelle & Michael McDonald Nasty/Janet Jackson 25. 6/21/86 On My Own/Patti LaBelle & Michael McDonald Nasty/Janet Jackson 26. 6/28/86 On My Own/Patti LaBelle & Michael McDonald Nasty/Janet Jackson 27. 7/5/86 They'll Be Sad Songs/Billy Ocean Dreams/Van Halen 28. 7/12/86 Holding Back The Years/Simply Red Invisible Touch/Genesis 29. 7/19/86 Invisible Touch/Genesis Invisible Touch/Genesis 30. 7/26/86 Sledgehammer/Peter Gabriel Mad About You/Belinda Carlisle 31. 8/2/86 The Glory Of Love/Peter Cetera Mad About You/Belinda Carlisle 32. 8/9/86 The Glory Of Love/Peter Cetera The Edge Of Heaven/Wham! 33. 8/16/86 Papa Don't Preach/Madonna The Edge Of Heaven/Wham! 34. 8/23/86 Papa Don't Preach/Madonna Venus/Bananarama 35. 8/30/86 Higher Love/Steve Winwood Venus/Bananarama 36. 9/6/86 Venus/Bananarama Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)/Glass Tiger 37. 9/13/86 Take My Breath Away/Berlin Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)/Glass Tiger 38. 9/20/86 Stuck With You/Huey Lewis & The News Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)/Glass Tiger 39. 9/27/86 Stuck With You/Huey Lewis & The News Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)/Glass Tiger 40. 10/4/86 Stuck With You/Huey Lewis & The News When I Think Of You/Janet Jackson 41. 10/11/86 When I Think Of You/Janet Jackson When I Think Of You/Janet Jackson 42. 10/18/86 When I Think Of You/Janet Jackson Girl Can't Help It/Journey 43. 10/25/86 True Colors/Cyndi Lauper Girl Can't Help It/Journey 44. 11/1/86 True Colors/Cyndi Lauper Girl Can't Help It/Journey 45. 11/8/86 Amanda/Boston Everybody Have Fun Tonight/Wang Chung 46. 11/15/86 Amanda/Boston Everybody Have Fun Tonight/Wang Chung 47. 11/22/86 Human/The Human League Notorious/Duran Duran 48. 11/29/86 You Give Love A Bad Name/Bon Jovi Notorious/Duran Duran 49. 12/6/86 The Next Time I Fall/Peter Cetera & Amy Grant Notorious/Duran Duran 50. 12/13/86 The Way It Is/Bruce Hornsby & The Range Walk Like An Egyptian/The Bangles 51. 12/20/86 Walk Like An Egyptian/The Bangles Land Of Confusion/Genesis 52. 12/27/86 Walk Like An Egyptian/The Bangles Land Of Confusion/Genesis

Hello, again. Today's fantasy #1 list is from 1985, a year that, IMO, was a marked improvement musically over '84. While only twenty songs made my cut the previous year, thirty songs made the cut in '85. And it all goes downhill after this year; for each of the remaining three years that I'll be submitting #1 lists, I select only 22 #1 songs per year. And in each of those last three years, there will be a few #1's that I'll only be mildly enthusiastic about. But all my choices in '85 are solid, high-quality ones. (The left column are Billboard #1's; the right column are my #1's.) While I personally wouldn't have ranked all your #1's the same if I were doing this, it's nice to see someone else really likes "We Built This City". And apparently we're not alone judging from all the recurrent play it gets, critics and the press aside. "Sentimental Street", "You Spin Me Round", and "Fortress Around Your Heart" are some others I agree with you that they should have been a lot bigger than they were.

Hey, slf. My fantasy top 20 will end with late summer of 1986, so my interest is fading with each new list. 😉 For what it's worth, I like all of your choices this time around. My list, though, will have a greater turnover rate.
As for Van Halen, I'll be putting "Why Can't This Be Love" at #1. Yes, I get time out in the corner for that one -- there's probably not one single member on this board who likes it.

Nah, no time outs for you; I actually kinda like "Why Can't This Be Love", just not as much as "Dreams" or "Love Walks In". Furthermore, I like the "Van Hagar" era of that band more than the "David Lee Roth" era. I hope you can stay interested for two more fantasy lists (87 & 88). I'm thinking the end of Casey's first AT40 go-round makes a good stopping point. Besides, from 1989 on, the attention I gave to Top 40 radio started to wane, being sporadic, at best.

I'm back with my fantasy #1 list for 1987, which is my penultimate list. I've decided that 1988 will be my last one, to coincide with the end of Casey initial run with AT40. Besides, starting in 1989, I started to follow current music less and less, partly because fewer and fewer songs caught my fancy. As for this year's list, the summertime's music choices were, IMHO, mediocre; my choices of #1 songs by Europe, T'Pau, and Debbie Gibson were only pretty good. But earlier in the year and later in the year saw some of my absolute favorite songs of the late '80's. (The left column are Billboard #1's; the right column are my #1's.)

Going back to '85, slf, I've got to be fair. You get on a roll in the spring time, with Simple Minds, Murray Head, Tears for Fears, and Howard Jones. All four will be #1's on my list.
And I also love "Easy Lover", "Would I Lie to You?", "Take On Me", and "Perfect Way." And "Alive & Kicking" is exactly that, with a four-week bounce. Nice!

For 1987, I love "Keep Your Hands to Yourself", "Big Love", "Right on Track", "Breakout", and "I Knew You Were Waiting (for Me)," which is now my favorite song of that year.
All three U2 singles would be #1's or #2's for me. Maybe the best trifecta of the 80s.
Thank you for not letting Bon Jovi get to the top spot. Ugh! So sick of them.

Hello, again. Well, this is it; my final fantasy #1 list. As I pointed out before, starting in 1989, I started to follow pop music less and less, having less-than-warm feelings for the ever-dominating genres of rap and grunge. Even this year 1988, IMHO, was nothing to write home about, at least from August forward (coincidentally, when Casey was replaced by Shadoe). Except for "Smooth Criminal", none of my #1's during that five month period rose above "pretty good" standing. Nevertheless, I've enjoyed sharing these lists with you all, and I hope I inspire more of you to submit your fantasy #1 lists. (The left column are Billboard #1's; the right column are my #1's.)

Well, in '88, you did the best you could given what you had to work with. I like your back-to-back solo Go-Go picks, and the rarely-played "Strange but True" and "Love Changes (Everything)."
The pickings are slim. The fall of that year was particularly barren when it came to quality music. The worst #1 record of the decade, "Baby I Love Your Way / Freebird Medley," was out then. (Radio must have really come up short on ballads.)
I don't know when I'll have my list ready. As I've been saying, it'll be a week-by-week fantasy top 20 chart, not just a rundown of #1's, and it'll cover late summer of '74 through late summer of '86. So far I'm still selecting the songs using my Joel Whitburn book. I'm in the "L" artists alphabetically.
This has been fun. Thanks, slf!

Here's my list for 1975. Despite the continued revolving door situation on AT40, I'm still surprised at the low number of weeks when we were in agreement (indicated by *). I like a year when lots of songs hang on to #1 for two or three weeks. On FT20, there were 10 such songs. Not bad. Happy accident: My 17th #1 song of the year was "At Seventeen."
