Good evening. I'm finally back to pick up where I left off in my fantasy #1 lists. I had a rough, grueling week at work, and I'm getting over a cold, all of which has zapped me of energy until now. Today I'm covering 1981, not a particularly good year for me, but there was enough decent music to make it bearable. Two songs on my lists peaked outside the Top 40 (denoted by an asterisk), and both were by Canadian hard-rock bands. Ironic, eh? (The left column are Billboard #1's; the right column are my #1's.)
1. 1/3/81 (Just Like) Starting Over/John Lennon & Yoko Ono (frozen week) It's My Turn/Diana Ross 2. 1/10/81 (Just Like) Starting Over/John Lennon & Yoko Ono I Made It Through The Rain/Barry Manilow 3. 1/17/81 (Just Like) Starting Over/John Lennon & Yoko Ono Together/Tierra 4. 1/24/81 (Just Like) Starting Over/John Lennon & Yoko Ono Together/Tierra 5. 1/31/81 The Tide Is High/Blondie Together/Tierra 6. 2/7/81 Celebration/Kool & The Gang Woman/John Lennon 7. 2/17/81 Celebration/Kool & The Gang Woman/John Lennon 8. 2/21/81 9 To 5/Dolly Parton A Little In Love/Cliff Richard 9. 2/28/81 I Love A Rainy Night/Eddie Rabbitt A Little In Love/Cliff Richard 10. 3/7/81 I Love A Rainy Night/Eddie Rabbitt Precious To Me/Phil Seymour 11. 3/14/81 9 To 5/Dolly Parton Precious To Me/Phil Seymour 12. 3/21/81 Keep On Loving You/REO Speedwagon Precious To Me/Phil Seymour 13. 3/28/81 Rapture/Blondie While You See A Chance/Steve Winwood 14. 4/4/81 Rapture/Blondie While You See A Chance/Steve Winwood 15. 4/11/81 Kiss On My List/Hall & Oates While You See A Chance/Steve Winwood 16. 4/18/81 Kiss On My List/Hall & Oates While You See A Chance/Steve Winwood 17. 4/25/81 Kiss On My List/Hall & Oates While You See A Chance/Steve Winwood 18. 5/2/81 Morning Train (9 To 5)/Sheena Easton Take It On The Run/REO Speedwagon 19. 5/9/81 Morning Train (9 To 5)/Sheena Easton Take It On The Run/REO Speedwagon 20. 5/16/81 Bette Davis Eyes/Kim Carnes Bette Davis Eyes/Kim Carnes 21. 5/23/81 Bette Davis Eyes/Kim Carnes Bette Davis Eyes/Kim Carnes 22. 5/30/81 Bette Davis Eyes/Kim Carnes I Love You/Climax Blues Band 23. 6/6/81 Bette Davis Eyes/Kim Carnes I Love You/Climax Blues Band 24. 6/13/81 Bette Davis Eyes/Kim Carnes Stars On 45 Medley/Stars On 45 25. 6/20/81 Stars On 45 Medley/Stars On 45 Stars On 45 Medley/Stars On 45 26. 6/27/81 Bette Davis Eyes/Kim Carnes Elvira/The Oak Ridge Boys 27. 7/4/81 Bette Davis Eyes/Kim Carnes The Greatest American Hero/Joey Scarbury 28. 7/11/81 Bette Davis Eyes/Kim Carnes The Greatest American Hero/Joey Scarbury 29. 7/18/81 Bette Davis Eyes/Kim Carnes Tom Sawyer/Rush* 30. 7/25/81 The One That You Love/Air Supply Tom Sawyer/Rush* 31. 8/1/81 Jessie's Girl/Rick Springfield The Greatest American Hero/Joey Scarbury 32. 8/8/81 Jessie's Girl/Rick Springfield In The Air Tonight/Phil Collins 33. 8/15/81 Endless Love/Diana Ross & Lionel Richie In The Air Tonight/Phil Collins 34. 8/22/81 Endless Love/Diana Ross & Lionel Richie In The Air Tonight/Phil Collins 35. 8/29/81 Endless Love/Diana Ross & Lionel Richie Step By Step/Eddie Rabbitt 36. 9/5/81 Endless Love/Diana Ross & Lionel Richie Step By Step/Eddie Rabbitt 37. 9/12/81 Endless Love/Diana Ross & Lionel Richie I Could Never Miss You (More Than I Do)/Lulu 38. 9/19/81 Endless Love/Diana Ross & Lionel Richie I Could Never Miss You (More Than I Do)/Lulu 39. 9/26/81 Endless Love/Diana Ross & Lionel Richie General Hospi-Tale/The Afternoon Delights 40. 10/3/81 Endless Love/Diana Ross & Lionel Richie Arthur's Theme/Christopher Cross 41. 10/10/81 Endless Love/Diana Ross & Lionel Richie Arthur's Theme/Christopher Cross 42. 10/17/81 Arthur's Theme/Christopher Cross Start Me Up/The Rolling Stones 43. 10/24/81 Arthur's Theme/Christopher Cross Hill Street Blues Theme/Mike Post 44. 10/31/81 Arthur's Theme/Christopher Cross Magic Power/Triumph* 45. 11/7/81 Private Eyes/Hall & Oates Magic Power/Triumph* 46. 11/14/81 Private Eyes/Hall & Oates Sausalito Summernight/Diesel 47. 11/21/81 Physical/Olivia Newton-John Sausalito Summernight/Diesel 48. 11/28/81 Physical/Olivia Newton-John Don't Stop Believin'/Journey 49. 12/5/81 Physical/Olivia Newton-John Don't Stop Believin'/Journey 50. 12/12/81 Physical/Olivia Newton-John Don't Stop Believin'/Journey 51. 12/19/81 Physical/Olivia Newton-John Don't Stop Believin'/Journey 52. 12/26/81 Physical/Olivia Newton-John Don't Stop Believin'/Journey

Glad you're feeling better, slf.
When I put the finishing touches on my fantasy top 20 -- which won't be for a long while -- I think 1981 will be the toughest year to figure out. The pickings were slim even then. It's easy to see why the turnover was so slow in the upper reaches of the charts.
Nonetheless, you made some excellent choices: "Together", "While You See a Chance", "In the Air Tonight", "I Could Never Miss You." I like "Bette Davis Eyes" as a multi-weeker while both "Endless Love" and "Physical" are shut out.
Some great mainstream rock records came out later in the year, like "Urgent", "Who's Crying Now", and "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around." Two of those will be #1 on my list. But I have to say, you're killing me with "Don't Stop Believin'." Generally you steer clear of the overplayed stuff, but no song has been more overplayed than that one (with the possible exception of "Livin' on a Prayer"). That's just me...

Yeah, most overplayed songs I do get tired of, but I think all of us have certain (to paraphrase Brian Wilson) "pet songs" that we love so much we have yet to grow tired of them, even many years after their chart runs. "Don't Stop Believin" , from my perspective, fits that description.

I'm back with my next fantasy #1 list, this time for 1982. (After going a week between '80 and '81, I though I'd submit two lists in rapid succession to make up for my absence.) The song choices in the early months of the year were somewhat underwhelming, which is why I have a good-but-not great Paul Davis song at #1 for so long. But the music later in the year improved greatly. (The left column are Billboard #1's; the right column are my #1's.)

"Don't Stop Believin'", from my perspective, fits that description. True! I've got my overplayed pet songs as well. There's about an equal number of 70s and 80s records in that category.

Another challenging year, 1982. I love "Cool Night", "867-5309", "The Other Woman", "Rosanna," and "Only the Lonely." Several of those will be #1 for me too. Can't wait to see what you've done with '83!

Moving into the 80s, this is my fantasy 1980. "Call Me" has the longest run at #1 since "Hey Jude" back in 1968.
