I bet Cubby was laid off (not fired) because the producers felt there was a better fit than Cubby. Maybe Cubby was being paid too much, and the producers wanted to hire a newbie because it is economical - hence being a layoff. Keep in mind that job security does add up costs and cost a company in the long term.
There's a big difference between "fired" and "laid off".
If workers are fired, they are fired due to behavioral problems, unethical or unlawful behavior, or weakening performance.
If workers are laid off, they are laid off due to cost-cutting, downsizing, reformatting or restructuring.
Did Cubby do anything unlawful or unethical? Most likely not. Did Cubby's performance weaken? Not likely.
Therefore, "layoff" is the right term.

I doubt it was even anything at all. Way too much thought is put into this stuff.

I listened to the show yesterday for the first time in three years and some observations: Kid Kelly seemed more enthusiastic than usual or maybe it was just me, maybe I just haven't listened to the show in awhile but he seemed more energetic than I remember. I also noticed there's a new sign off, which I think is unnecessary. I don't think it improves the show. Otherwise same old same old. Then again, I have no idea what I was expecting. If they played some songs that are actually "lost" as well as the usual Top 40 Hits by Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Culture Club, Duran Duran etc...and added some contests, you know make it more fun to listen to, maybe it would breathe new life into the show. Or not. At this point I'm not expecting a miracle. It's hard to breathe new life into a show that's set in its ways.

I agree. In the shows I have heard in the last few months Kid sounds waaaaay more into it than he has in 20 years.

Which leads me to ask, who else has guested on Backtrax over the years? Obviously Cubby was the main guest host until last year. Robby Bridges hosted once in November of last year. And Jojo Morales hosted once in February 2004. Other than that, has anyone else hosted for Kid in the past 25+ years? I have an early "Backtrax USA" show on CD hosted by a local PD Cruze from WKBQ St. Louis which was an affiliate of BUSA.

Toby Knapp is hosting his first Backtrax USA this weekend. He sounds a little bit like Cubby. I was just going to post this. I can’t believe how much this new guy sounds like Cubby. This is the first time I listened to the show in awhile and I never heard this guy host so I was surprised when he introduced himself. I can’t get over how much he sounds like Cubby.

And last weekend some new 80s songs at least I haven't heard and first time these songs in Backtrax 80s is Irene Cara - Breakdance and Aretha Franklin and George Michael - I Knew You Were Waiting

That is typically how it works. A sub host fills in for a week and then the regular host returns.’
But yes - the playlist has expanded quite a bit recently, as has Kid’s delivery on the show. It’s almost like he took our advice after 15 years.

It’s almost like he took our advice after 15 years. It’s about d**n time they expanded the playlist. Although I thought they always played “Flashdance” and “I Knew You Were Waiting” but I could be wrong. Another song I don’t think I’ve ever heard on Backtrax is Tiffany’s re-make of “I Think We’re Alone Now”, which was a number one song. If Kid Kelly doesn’t want to host the show anymore let Toby be the permanent host. He did a decent enough job. Toby is young and enthusiastic. Kid doesn’t seem to have his heart in it anymore and it seems like he’s busy with other things. I don’t listen to the show every week anymore but if they keep it up where they at least attempt to change it up I might give it another try.

That song was from 1984. I'm sorry for typo And I did remember hearing Flashdance song in backtrax 80s, just quite awhile.. I also remember hearing tiffanys I think we're alone now for backtrack 80s some time maybe several months ago

Anyone familiar with Kid Kelly and his work should watch his induction and acceptance speech into the Radio Hall of Fame. It’s worth your time to hear his story - very humbling. Video can be found posted on the Backtrax USA Facebook wall. m.facebook.com/BacktraxUSA/?ref=ts
