No, it wasn't for local inserts. It was if he was on for the very first time explaining what the show was.

Kid's new thing to say is that "we are breaking away from what we usually do, to bring the station two hours of 80s hits" -as if he is part of the regular airstaff. It's as if he wants to deny it is a syndicated show. Kind of like AT40. Weird.

That would sound really stupid on stations that play predominately 80s music.

I missed this until today, but Backtrax USA is back on in the # 1 market in the USA. A custom 3 hour version of the 80s show airs 9p-Midnight Sundays on WCBS FM.

Backtrax USA already has an absurd amount of breaks and local spots (I think they give the affiliates 8 minutes an hour whereas most shows give 5). In fact, WCBS rolls through segments without breaking and then adds extra local content at the end of the hour. It may actually be a 4 hour 80s show. I messaged WCBS to ask more, I doubt I will hear back but it never hurts.

Meanwhile, Kid just hired Toby Knapp, one of my favourite local DJ's, to be 90s music curator and guest host. Toby does mornings on WASH-FM now (AC with music from 1980s-present) which also carries Backtrax. He just moved over there (literally, across the hall) from CHR WIHT (Hot 99.5), home of the Kane Show and the weekend evening Club Kane. ramp247.com/syndication/knapp-time-for-backtrax-usa/

Every time someone posts back in this thread I keep thinking “here comes the announcement, it’s over” because I can’t imagine there’s much else to talk about yet there apparently still is.

Radio in Tampa is severely lacking.

Toby Knapp must have taken over for Cubby, who has been fill in and the 90s scheduler for over a decade.
Why a show that plays the same music in a 4-5 week rotation needs a fill in host or 90s "curator" is beyond me.

I remember listening to Backtrack USA in early 1998. He wasn't filling in as often as Charlie Van Dyke did for Casey Kasem in the 80s. As for playing the same music in a cycle of 4 to 5 weeks, maybe the show should throw in some underplayed 80s material. I am surprised I never heard anything by Lionel Richie on the show, not even his iconic material "All Night Long" and "Dancing on the Ceiling".

I’m pretty sure they’ve played “Hello” and “All Night Long” but you’re right in the 10 years of listening to this show, I don’t think I’ve ever heard his most iconic and huge hits...”Dancing On The Ceiling”, “Say You Say Me”, “You Are”, “Penny Lover” etc..what do they have against Lionel Richie? He was one of the popular artists of the 80s. I can’t believe they fired Cubby. At least he had more energy than Kid Kelly.

Toby Knapp is hosting his first Backtrax USA this weekend. He sounds a little bit like Cubby.
Which leads me to ask, who else has guested on Backtrax over the years? Obviously Cubby was the main guest host until last year. Robby Bridges hosted once in November of last year. And Jojo Morales hosted once in February 2004. Other than that, has anyone else hosted for Kid in the past 25+ years?
