"Hi-De-Ho" by Blood, Sweat and Tears was originally recorded by The City featuring Carole King (co-writer) on lead vocals. The City's version was titled "That Old Sweet Roll (Hi-De-Ho)" "Danny's Song" by Anne Murray was previously recorded by Loggins & Messina. However, it was not the original version. The original version from 1970 was by the Los Angeles studio group Gator Creek. Kenny Loggins was a member and sang lead.

And one more: Whitney Houston's 1996-1997 song from the movie soundtrack of "The Preacher's Wife" called "Step By Step" was first done by Annie Lennox in 1992.

"Delta Dawn" by Helen Reddy hit #1 in 1973, but Tanya Tucker failed to chart with it on American Top 40 the year before.
"Delta Dawn" was also covered by Bette Midler, but it was on the B side of Bette Midler's "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy".

You can't cover this thread thoroughly without mentioning Laura Nyro: Three Dog Night - Eli's Coming And When I Die - Blood, Sweat And Tears Barbra Streisand - Stoney End Barbra also recorded two of Laura's songs that reached the Hot 100, but missed the Top 40: "Time And Love", "Flim-Flam Man (Hands Off The Man)" Fifth Dimension - Wedding Bell Blues - Stoned Soul Picnic - Blowing Away - Sweet Blindness - Save The Country The irony is that the only time Laura reached the Hot 100, it was with a cover of King/Goffin's "Up On The Roof"

"Rhythm of My Heart" was a US Top 40 hit for Scotsman Rod Stewart in 1991, five years after it was first recorded by Dutch artist Rene Shuman, and in 1996 it hit the UK Top 40 in a cover by the Scottish band Runrig. The song was co-written by American-born Canadian Marc Jordan.
How's that for an international song?

And if you included Casey's Countdown AC: In 1994, Kenny Loggins' "Return to Pooh Corner" which made the top 20 AC chart is a remake of Loggins and Messina's "House on Pooh Corner" which was also originally done by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, but Loggins and Messina's and Dirt Band's versions didn't make the top 40 reaches of the Billboard Hot 100.

That was the version where Kenny added a third verse, replacing the bridge, where he and Messina sang "la la la" to the tune of the verses in their original version. Wasn't Amy Grant featured on the 1994 version as well? Yeah, I remember hearing that on Casey's Countdown back in the summer of 1994.
