There was a song from 1991 called "Set The Night To Music" by Roberta Flack & Maxi Priest which hit the Top 40, but the original was on the 1987 album "No Protection" by Starship. Starship's version was featured on the ending credits of the 1987 movie "Vice Versa."

Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds by Elton John.
The Beatles original didn't chart.
Sergio Mendes hit with Fool On The Hill.
The Beatles didn't chart with theirs.
Underground Sunshine hit with Birthday.
You guessed it, Beatles didn't chart with their version.

Aretha Franklin reached the top 40 with "Border Song" a few months after Elton John missed the 40 with it.
Grand Funk hit #3 with "Some Kind of Wonderful" after the Soul Brothers Six reached 91 with in 1967.
Linda Ronstadt took Betty Everett's "You're no Good" that went to 51 all the way to #1.

Michael Morales and 5 Seconds Of Summer both hit the top 40 with "What I Like About You", the Romantics' version missed the top 40.
10,000 Maniacs hit the top 40 with "More Than This", Roxy Music's version missed the top 40.
Celine Dion hit the top 40 with "If You Asked Me To", Patti LaBelle's version missed the top 40.
Speaking of Celine Dion, both she and Laura Branigan made the top 40 with "The Power Of Love"; Jennifer Rush's version didn't.
Whitney Houston had some; "I Will Always Love You" was a cover of Dolly Parton and "I Believe In You And Me" was a cover of the Four Tops. Neither original hit the top 40.
Orgy's version of "Blue Monday" hit the top 40 which New Order's original failed to do.

Looking over 1974 hits I found at least two where artists did new versions of their own songs and had hits. Gregg Allman "Midnight Rider" (first released by the Allman Bros. in 1970), Rick Derringer "Rock and Roll Hootchie Koo" (first released by Johnny Winter And in 1970).

In early 1992, a group called The Party had a song called "In My Dreams" which was originally done by Dokken. As a hard rock/heavy metal fan, that was a bitter pill to swallow.

Orgy only made it to #56 with their cover of Blue Monday.
The Party was 5 teens from the New Mickey Mouse Club. Bigger, harder pill to swallow!

Johnny Rivers' last Top 40 hit, Swayin' To The Music, was first recorded by The Funky Kings, who charted but failed to make the Top 40.

at40nut, I can attest to your feeling. That Dokken song is a much better original.
A couple more that I thought were B sides originally though I am not sure about one...."Tainted Love" by Soft Cell. Thought it was a B side for the Elgins. And Natalie Cole hit the 40 with "Pink Cadillac" that was the flip of "Dancing in the Dark".

The Elgins reached #50 in 1966 with "Heaven Must Have Sent You", which became a top 40 hit (#11) in 1979 for Bonnie Pointer.

What about "It's Gonna Take A Miracle?" The Royalettes hit BBH100 #41 in 1965. Deniece Williams reached #10 on BBH100 in Spring 1982.
What do you do with Marshall Crenshaw? Robert Gordon failed to hit the top 40 in 1981 with his cover of MC's "Someday Someway." But, in the Summer of 1982, MC cracked the top 40 with his own version.

The Beatles didn't release Michelle as a single in the states, right? So, the David & Jonathan cover would count, I would think.

"Delta Dawn" by Helen Reddy hit #1 in 1973, but Tanya Tucker failed to chart with it on American Top 40 the year before.
"Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes hit #1 in 1981, but Jackie DeShannon's original 1974 version was never released as a single.
"Queen of Hearts" by Juice Newton hit #2 in 1981, but Dave Edmunds failed to chart with it on AT40 two years earlier.
"Manic Monday" by The Bangles hit #2 in 1986 because Prince gave it to them after pulling his 1984 version from Apollonia 6.

Here's an artist who had not ONE but TWO cover songs from the same artist. Back in 1977, Manfred Mann's Earth Band cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Blinded By The Light" hit #1, but was not a Top 40 hit for Bruce. Later that same year, Manfred Mann's Earth Band covered "Spirit In The Night" which was also a Springsteen tune, hit the Top 40, but just barely. It hit #40 for one week on 6-4-77. That is what I call "A Famous 40!"
