Offering up another tune which spent only one week on the Hot 100. Silversun Pickups debuted and peaked at #92 on the 5/2/2009 chart with this tune which went to #1 on the Alternative chart. Loved this song when it was played on alternative rock stations but I had never seen the video until last week. I had assumed it was the female in the group singing this song, and once the lyrics started in the video... holy cow, it's a guy singing this song! Apparently, he went to the Nick Gilder "Is This A Male Or A Female?" School For Vocals. Here is Silversun Pickups with "Panic Switch":

From this week in 2006, it's a song that did not hit the Hot 100, but debuted on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play chart that week at #34 and would eventually go to #1 on the chart. Here's "Faster Kill Pu55ycat" by Paul Oakenfold, featuring vocals by the late actress Brittany Murphy.

From this week in 2011, it's a song that was then on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart (the current name for the Modern Rock Tracks chart) at #18, but would not hit the Bubbling Under chart until October, where it would peak at #114. Here's "Young Blood" by The Naked and Famous.

I have a story to tell behind this Lost 21st Century Classic pick. I work in education, and it's a treat to work with students ranging from kindergarten through senior year. At my previous school, a student named Cole was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer when he was in 1st grade. His treatment was successful at the time but there was a relapse during his 6th grade year, and then again during his freshman year. With his latest treatment, he also had to have part of his liver removed. Cole is a fighter with a great personality and a cool demeanor. I don't know how he has survived three bouts of cancer while always having a smile on his face.
He loves comedy and his idol is Jimmy Fallon, host of The Tonight Show. Jimmy's staff heard that Cole was a huge fan, and Cole and his family were invited last week to meet Jimmy Fallon. Cole had a great time sharing jokes and playing Super Mario Bros with Jimmy, and he attended a monologue rehearsal. After the rehearsal, Cole got to meet Questlove, the leader of The Roots, the Tonight Show band. Questlove noticed Cole was wearing a bow tie, so Questlove gave Cole one of his own ties. When Cole mentioned that he was a percussionist in his school band, Questlove gave him a autographed pair of drumsticks! Needless to say, Jimmy and Questlove made Cole's day!
So for Jimmy and Questlove, here is my Lost 21st Century Classic pick... my favorite song from The Roots. This song features Joey Chestnutt, and it is called "The Seed". It never charted on the Hot 100 but was released in the Spring of 2003... this should have been a hit:

From this date in 2008, it's a song that debuted at #57 on the Hot 100, but only peaked 6 notches higher at #51. On the Mediabase chart, it would peak at #30. Here's "If I Never See Your Face Again" by Maroon 5 with Rihanna.

From May 31, 2008, this was the only week on the chart for this song by this singer from Cleveland, OH who had a recurring role as Mia Catalano on One Tree Hill. It was the first version of this Leonard Cohen-written standard to hit the Hot 100. Here is Kate Voegele, who was at #68 that week with her version of "Hallelujah".
