Extreme weather situation in parts of Austria



There have been severe storms in large parts of Austria over the past few days. Due to heavy rain, the fire department was in constant use in some areas. Many people had to leave their homes and the emergency services have been working flat out for days to clear flooded cellars and mired or flooded streets.

"It was a Sunday morning and I had a piano in the flat that I lived in at the time. Every day I would try and come up with an idea for a song. I couldn´t really play the piano, I can find a note and there were certain chord shapes that I grew to like – I knew what they were from my guitar playing. So with that song, I started with a C#m7 shape and immediately started singing ´Change your heart…´ and thought that sounded good."

The filling station is 100

It all began in August 1888 with Bertha Benz´s first overland journey from Mannheim to Pforzheim. Two years earlier, her husband Carl Benz had invented the first automobile. To cover the distance, Bertha Benz bought spotted petrol from the town pharmacy in Wiesloch, which is therefore known as the world´s first "filling station". 36 years later, on 9/16/1924, Austria´s first petrol station was finally opened on Jakominiplatz in Graz.

From the 1920s onwards, an increasingly dense network of petrol stations developed in Europe. The first petrol stations also appeared in Germany and Austria in the form of petrol kiosks. The necessary equipment was stored in a small hut, and vehicles could be filled up with petrol using a hose leading to the outside.

The filling kiosks were eventually replaced by sidewalk filling stations from 1926, explains Eberhart. The technology moved out of the kiosk and onto the sidewalk, and from then on the hut served as a place for the fuel attendant to stay and as a store for accessories.

A petrol station on Triester Strasse in Vienna wanted to create a feel-good atmosphere in 1958:



In addition to Austria´s first petrol station on Jakominiplatz in Graz, two more petrol stations were built in Graz shortly afterwards. But why wasn´t the federal capital Vienna the pioneer here ? The book points to the central location of Graz on the route from Vienna to the south or to Trieste as the reason. It was not until 8/29/1925 that the opening of the first public "petrol station" in Vienna at the Volksoper on the Währinger Gürtel was reported.

Time for an extra: Imagination

Leee John, Ashley Ingram and Errol Kennedy founded Imagination in 1981 and had three top 10 hits in this formation. According to the band, the name was inspired by John Lennon´s hit "Imagine". At the same time, a motto had already been found when the band was formed: Imagination was to be a "silky, sexy and erotic" band. Both the cover designs and the performances of the band Imagination were obviously dedicated to this motto.

Great ELO and ONJ but yikes that roller skating stuff is cringe. The fad that never was. Not then, at least.

"Footloose" may want to have a word with you . But seriously... only 55% of critics on the Rotten Tomatoes website liked Footloose which means it received the "rotten" tag. Amazingly, 32% of critics liked Xanadu!

Rolling Stone magazine had an article featuring 20 bad movies with good soundtracks. The writer somehow included "Saturday Night Fever" and "Purple Rain" on the list even though SNV received an 82% positive rating, and PR had a 72% favorability rating from critics. As an AT40 extra , here are Gene Siskel and Rogert Ebert reviewing "Footloose" (starts at about 7:35 in the video below). After hearing "Hold on Tight" on Casey Kasem's American Top 40 Mighty 690 AM Radio Show back in Summer 1981 while with family around Ventura, California, a US Route 101 road trip to Santa Barbara's Mission when I was just 8 years old, Dad then bought me my very first Electric Light Orchestra album from Tower Records, an audio cassette of Time by ELO, thus started the fandom 43 years ago.

Premiere for Mille Miglia in Salzburg

One of the most traditional classic car races in the world was a guest in Salzburg for the first time this year: the participants in the Mille Miglia in Italy will be warming up for this race here in Austria. It´s not about speed, but about driving as smoothly as possible.

With Salzburg, Austria now joins the list of countries hosting the warm-up - it has previously taken place in Japan, the USA, the United Arab Emirates, China and Switzerland, among others. The participants´ vehicles date from 1927 to 1976.

The first stage led from Fuschlsee (Flachgau) to Mittersill (Pinzgau) - including the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. On the second day, the ride continued from Mittersill via Zell am See and Maria Alm (all Pinzgau), then through the Lammertal (Tennengau) and on to St. Gilgen (Flachgau). The final destination was the Residenzplatz in Salzburg´s old town, where the classic cars could be admired.

Matchbox are an English rockabilly band that formed in 1971, and is still active. The band was formed in Middlesex back in 1971.
The band´s biggest hits include "Rockabilly Rebel" and "Midnite Dynamos", a cover of The Crickets´ "When You Ask About Love".
And "Love´s Made A Fool Of You" also has its origins in Buddy Holly and the Crickets:
