Mmmmmm... trumpet, trombone and saxophone... . I love how the horns kick in just a few seconds into "Call On Me" while the horns make for an awesome ending on "Take It Away". Here you go...

40 years of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles

ABC pays 288 million dollars for the worldwide broadcasting rights: this is the first time the Olympics have made a profit. Like Jesse Owens 48 years earlier, Carl Lewis wins gold four times.

It was to be a colorful Games in Los Angeles, even if the athletes from the USSR, the GDR and Cuba stayed away as a reaction to the Western boycott in Moscow in 1980. The official reason: allegedly inadequate security precautions.
But the colorful spectacle with a record 140 nations taking part, for whose worldwide broadcasting rights the US broadcaster ABC paid the then enormous sum of 288 million dollars, is remembered as a great Olympic show that, thanks to powerful sponsors, generates millions in profits for the first time.

The Olympics - privately financed for the first time - had finally become big business. Seemingly inspired by the hovering "Rocket Man" with jet propulsion at the opening ceremony, US athlete Carl Lewis puts on a galactic performance: with gold over 100, 200, 4 x 100 meters and in the long jump, he repeats a feat that only Jesse Owens had previously achieved in Berlin in 1936. Romanian gymnast Ecaterina Szabo also won four gold medals plus one silver.

Time for a French extra: Caroline Loeb

"C´est la Ouate" is a song by the French composer Philippe Chany, which was recorded by the Parisian singer Caroline Loeb. The song is an anti-Wonderwoman anthem that calls on women to celebrate their laziness and refusal to perform. It is aimed at women who are night owls and who find it difficult to lead a liberated life. The refrain "C´est la Ouate" is a playful rephrasing of the French expression "C´est la vie". It is a humorous way of pointing out that it is okay to simply have a good time and not always be perfect. "C´est la Ouate" describes a woman who doesn´t follow conventions and lives by her own rules. She likes to go out, party the night away and enjoy her life. She consciously indulges in laziness and refuses to bow to society´s expectations of a "perfect" woman.

The Olympics far away



18000 km from Paris, in Teahupo´o in the south of Tahiti, the road ends abruptly. It even makes a U-turn around a traffic circle adorned with a "work of art". A large, emerald-green wave that threatens to crash onto a longboard. On it are the names of the living surf gods who write the legend of Teahupo'o year after year.

This is the "most dangerous wave in the world". The warning is written in red letters on a sign on the edge of the beach. The Tahitian chiefs used to demonstrate their superiority and divine status here.

The wave rages 400 m from the shore, directly behind the coral reef. Papeete is 60 km away. But here one is "on the peninsula", as the locals say, to show that they do not belong in the same world. Seen from the air, it looks like the tail fin of the large fish formed by the island of Tahiti.

The surfers perform maneuvers and tricks on a wave and are then scored by five judges according to the variety of their sequence, the type of tricks performed and the difficulty of the tricks. The speed, power and flow of the surfers are also included in the marks awarded by the judges.

Time for a French extra: Alizee

Over 20 years ago, a cute 15-year-old girl in a flower dress danced through the fields of France and turned men´s heads. Singer Alizee Lyonnet landed the summer hit of the year with her song "Moi Lolita". Although she went quiet internationally after just three songs, Alizee was able to score more hits in her native France. She released a total of six studio albums there.
After her last album in 2014, however, she stopped making music, as she revealed in October 2017: "I am proud of my career, but after seven years and a total of six albums, I no longer have the desire to continue with music."

In 2013, she won the fourth season of the French edition of "Let´s Dance" and also took part in the tours in the three following years. She also opened a dance school in 2017.

In 2019, the birth of her second daughter, Maggy, made her new family happiness perfect. She regularly gives her almost 800,000 Instagram followers insights into her private life. And they show that she is living and enjoying life to the full. Alizee is happy.

A little bit of French

By her own admission, Nena was in love with the French language at school - but didn´t have such good grades. "My father spontaneously decided to give me an hour of lessons every day during the school vacations," the 64-year-old told the eastern French newspaper "Les Dernieres Nouvelles d´Alsace". If she were asked these days whether she spoke French well, she would answer: "A little bit".
According to the concert agency Wizard Promotions, a 40-year-old recording of the French version of the hit "Nur geträumt", "Amour Candide", turned up in archives. The previously unreleased version was released last month. A Nena concert is planned for 11/2/2024 in Paris.

"Rockollection" is an artificial word made up of "rock" and "collection".

The song was one of the first in which several oldies were mixed together and at the same time enjoyed commercial success in many countries, particularly in discotheques. This new form of mixing thus became known to a wider audience. The song, which was released in 1977, reflects in French the memories of adults of their youth at the time and illustrates them with mostly English-language oldies from the 1960s. Laurent Voulzy also released an English and Spanish version of the song.

After hearing "Hold on Tight" on Casey Kasem's American Top 40 Mighty 690 AM Radio Show back in August 1981 while with family around Ventura, California, a US Route 101 road trip to Santa Barbara's Mission when I was just 8 years old, Dad then bought me my very first Electric Light Orchestra album from Tower Records, an audio cassette of Time by ELO, thus started the fandom 43 years ago.

The previous year, David Bowie had released his "Ashes to Ashes" music video which was considered as the most innovative to date at that time. But Electric Light Orchestra were largely regarded to have surpassed that with their music video for "Hold on Tight". At the time it was the most expensive ever made at around £40,000 - Source: UK Midlands Central TV News, August 1981, thanks Ade.

"Taking part is everything" - that´s the Olympic motto.

However, the Olympic Games are not just about taking part - they are also about winning gold, silver and bronze medals.

Medals were competed for in a total of 32 sports and 48 disciplines. In the end, the USA took first place in the medal table - with a total of 126 medals, including 40 gold, 45 silver and 41 bronze. Second place goes to China with 40 gold, 27 silver and 24 bronze.

Austria finished the Games in Paris in 36th place in the medal table. Red-White-Red won a total of five medals: Two gold and three bronze.

Time for a French extra: Herve Vilard

Herve Vilard, whose real name is Rene Villard, is a French singer whose childhood is quite tormented, with a father he will never know and a mother who is not able to take care of her children on her own. Young Herve will therefore quickly get to know the orphanage and then the host families. Particularly difficult childhood and early adolescence where he often ran away.

He decided to go to Paris at the beginning of the 1960s and it was the providential meeting with Daniel Cordier, former resistance member and Jean Moulin´s secretary, that would considerably change the situation. The latter becomes his legal guardian and young Rene can finally leave the Assistance Publique.

He then found a small job in record store and took the opportunity to take singing lessons. Singing lessons that allowed him to be spotted by the Mercury label, which signed him and renamed him Herve Vilard.

A label that allows him to release a small single in 1965 which bears the name of ..."Capri, c´est fini". And for a first try, it´s a real masterstroke. The record is a hit, to the point of selling over 3 million copies worldwide! Real success that literally explodes the notoriety of the young singer overnight.

The rest will prove to be more complicated to manage than expected with several relatively successful singles. This did not prevent him from filming on European stages and his reputation at the International was such that he decided to start from 1967 a 2 years tour in Latin America in order to remake himself a health there.

A salutary exile which allowed him to return to his native land in great shape at the end of the decade. In particular, he released the "Sayonara" Single in 1969, a flagship title which sold over 550,000 copies. Short-lived success unfortunately because all the discs that will be released in the following years will in no way meet the success of the latter. Return to South America at the start of the 1970s, a continent on which its level of popularity did not decline and on which success followed success.

He will have to wait 8 years to find the favor of the French public thanks to the single "Nous".

He did it again two years later with the title "Reviens", which didn´t wait for the astounding sales score of "Nous" but which still sold over a million copies.
