While I really like or love 29 songs from the 6/29/85 countdown, these 13 are my absolute faves:A View To A Kill, Everybody Wants to Rule The World, Would I Like To You? Things Can Only Get Better, In My House, Voices Carry, Fresh, Cannonball, Get It On (Bang A Gong)*, People Are People, Shout, You Spin Me Round (Like A Record), What About LoveWhile I really like or love 23 songs from the 6/29/74 (not official) countdown, these 13 are my absolute faves:Sundown, You Make Me Feel Brand New, If You Love Me (Let Me Know), Rock The Boat, Hollywood Swinging, Band On The Run, Rock Your Baby, Midnight At The Oasis, Radar Love, Help Me, The Locomotion*, The Show Must Go On, LaGrange**
Power Station and Grand Funk receive This Week's Pick Hits designations. I don't believe I have ever selected two remakes for both of my weekly picks. I really love T-Rex's version of "Bang A Gong (Get It On)" but Power Station's version is a great one. All three versions of "The Locomotion" which hit the Top 10 are great with Grand Funk's version being my favorite. Here you go: BONUS: "LaGrange" by ZZ Top was played at #33 on the 6/29/74 countdown even though it was Billboard's #41 song that week. This classic deserves to be featured here:

The band celebrated its first commercial success with the album "Stella", but Carlos Peron had left the band before this record was released and Yello was now a duo consisting of Boris Blank and Dieter Meier. For real fans, this was the beginning of the commercialization phase; Yello´s truly experimental albums came before "Stella". "Vicious Games" was the first successful release from "Stella". However, until the single "The Race" in 1988, Yello were still considered more of an insider tip. Yello had bought new synthesizers for the recordings, a Yamaha DX7 and a Roland JX-3P. Ironically, they were still so unfamiliar with the new equipment during the recording sessions that they mostly reverted to the old Fairlight CMI. Similarly, the band´s first attempts at digital post-production were a disappointment. According to Yello, the processes were simply not yet fully developed. Thus, "Vicious Games" really is a turning point for Yello between the innovative founding phase with improvised (analog) production and the later complete perfection and mastery of the technology.

7/9/83: Champaign - Try AgainDef Leppard - Rock Of Ages Donna Summer - She Works Hard For The Money Journey - FaithfullyThe Human League - (Keep Feeling) Fascination Hits are becoming simplerPopular songs have become increasingly simple over the past 70 years. This applies to both the rhythms and the melodies, reports a research team from England. There are various theories as to the causes. Madeline Hamilton and Marcus Pearce from Queen Mary University of London analyzed the most distinctive melodies - usually the vocal melody - of songs that were the top five songs of the respective year in the US Billboard Year-End Singles Charts between 1950 and 2022. In total, more than 350 songs were included. According to the statistical analysis, the complexity of the song rhythms and sound arrangements decreased over the years, while the average number of notes played per second increased significantly. The research team recorded two jumps in the years 1975 and 2000 as well as a smaller one in 1996, which were characterized by a considerable reduction in complexity. According to the study, which has now been published in the journal "Scientific Reports", the decrease in 1975 is linked to the emergence of new genres such as disco and new wave. In the 1990s and at the turn of the millennium, the rise of hip-hop may have played a role. Hamilton and Pearce speculate that the decrease in melodic complexity could be due to an increase in the complexity of other musical elements such as the increased number of notes. Possibly so Another theory is that the musical trend mirrors the linguistic trend: "The digital age increasingly demands the compression of language so that what we have to say remains within character limits and fits into headlines." This reduces the complexity of messages and perhaps also the ability to digest complex ideas - it could be the same in popular music. In other words, people may no longer have the mental capacity for complex songs. The results fit in with an analysis of lyrics from more than 350,000 English-language songs presented in 2023. Western pop music is becoming increasingly simplistic and angry. The analysis of rap, country, pop, rock and R&B songs from 1980 to 2020 shows that the structure of lyrics has become increasingly simple. Lyrical elements are repeated more frequently, choruses take up more space and the vocabulary used has become smaller. And this brings us to an absolute "classics of the 80s"-edition: 7/9/83:David Bowie - China Girl Electric Light Orchestra - Rock 'n' Roll Is King Michael Jackson - Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' Michael Sembello - Maniac The Police - Every Breath You Take Time for a French extra: DesirelessDesireless, who was born in Paris on 12/25/1952, is Claudie Fritsch-Mentrop by real name. She began her professional career with an interest in fashion. She trained at Studio Bercot, a private training institute for fashion design in Paris and worked in several fashion houses. In 1975, she designed a collection called "Poivre et sel" (Pepper and Salt) with her friend Claude Sabbah. In 1980, Desireless gave up working in the fashion industry to sing in various bands. Most recently, she was the singer in the group Air 89. In 1983, she met the composer and producer Jean-Michel Rivat. Rivat had already made a name for himself with many other French artists. In 1986, Rivat composed the song "Voyage, voyage" together with Dominique Albert Dubois, which was released by the record company in December 1986. The songwriters created a melodic composition that evokes a feeling of wanderlust and a longing for adventure. A trip to India inspired their stage name. It means "without desire". Desireless changed her appearance so that she could not be classified as either a woman or a man. She also adopted a porcupine hairstyle. At first glance, you might think the haircut was created with a lawn edger. To underline her new trademark "without desire", she wore unusually loose, dark clothing. In her song, Desireless sings about wonderful places on earth like the highest mountain in Japan (Fujiyama), the Ganges, the Amazon rainforest in South America and the Sahara. Travel has a double meaning in the song. On the one hand, the lyrics motivate us to travel to wonderful places. But it´s also about traveling as self-awareness in order to rediscover inner values.

While I find 31 songs from the 7/16/88 countdown to be excellent, these 9 are fantabulous:New Sensation, Rush Hour, The Valley Road, Paradise*, I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That, Love Changes (Everything), Beds Are Burning, Fast Car, Simply IrresistibleWhile I dig 22 songs from the 7/10/71 countdown, these 9 are out of sight:Indian Reservation, Treat Her Like A Lady*, That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be, It Don't Come Easy, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, Funky Nassau, Don't Knock My Love, Signs, BeginningsSade along with Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose receive This Week's Pick Hits designations. "Paradise" leads off with one of the best things about the song... its bass line. You know how I have complained about newer Top 40 hits not having real horns in them? It seems like Top 40 hits today don't have pronounced bass lines... Bring back the boomin' bass! "Treat Her Like A Lady" is a fun song to sing background to. Yes, I enjoy singing Sister Rose's part ... but I'm cool with that. Here you go:

7/16/88:Chicago - I Don't Wanna Live Without Your Love Jane Wiedlin - Rush Hour Rod Stewart - Lost In You Sade - Paradise Tracy Chapman - Fast CarThe A1 Beach Pro Vienna 2024Gold for the Olympic Champions ! Norway´s Anders Mol and Christian Sorum defeated Poland´s Michal Bryl and Bartosz Losiak 2-0 (25-23, 21-12) in the final of the A1 Beach Pro Vienna 2024 on Sunday to add another Elite 16 gold medal to their already impressive collection. It was a clash between two teams who were still unbeaten in this tournament. The Poles were completely unimpressed against the Tokyo 2020 Olympic champions, taking the first point and staying ahead until Mol/Sorum pulled away to 8-7 with a service ace. The Norwegians´ precision shots were offset somewhat by service errors, but they held the upper hand against a battling Polish duo who were aiming for their second Elite 16 gold medal after Hamburg. Bryl/Losiak managed to fend off four set points before a killer block from Mol sealed their fate in the first set. It was a match worthy of the Olympic champions and World Championship bronze medalists. Even though the Vikings were in the lead throughout the second set, the Polish duo never let up the pressure. Mol's blocks were simply too solid a defense. In the end, a service ace from the two-meter-tall Norwegian ended the Poles' misery. For Mol/Sorum, it was their fifth win in Vienna and therefore a perfect dress rehearsal two weeks before the Olympic Games in Paris, where they want to defend their title. "This is exactly what we needed to find some confidence in our game," said Mol after the win and thanked the crowd, who supported them loudly. "It was priceless to play here !"
And here´s my current "beach"-edition: 7/16/88:Aerosmith - Rag Doll Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar On Me Fat Boys - The Twist Kylie Minogue - I Should Be So Lucky Poison - Nothin' But A Good Time Time for an French extra: France GallDuring vacations in Senegal in 1986, France Gall met a baby, Babacar Sall, and his young mother named Fatou who raised him alone and without money, so that the latter proposed France Gall to take him and raise him instead of her. Shocked, France Gall photographed the child and, when back in France, spoke about it to husband Michel Berger. They decided not to adopt the child but to help the young mother financially and materially. This story and France Gall´s distress led Michel Berger to write the song "Babacar". In January 1987, they went to Dakar again to shoot the music video for the song and saw Fatou and her child again. After finding an apartment to them, the couple financed the young woman´s seamstress studies as well as her son's future, whom they met again in 1992. On 1/7/2018, France Gall died at the age of 70 following a recurrence of cancer two years earlier. from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."
